The German Augustinian monk and professor of theology Martin Luther strongly disputed the claim that freedom from God's punishment of sin could be purchased with money.
In 1517 the priest initiated the Protestant Reformation by nailing his “Ninety-Five Theses” to the church door in Wittenberg, Germany. This led to a split in the Church, dividing it into the Protestant and Catholic branches.
