Fabulous Spanish Moss

Much has been written about Spanish Moss and its' interactions with various tales and superstitions. Spanish Moss is one of the "ingredients" used in making those spooky voodoo dolls. Many DO consider Spanish Moss to be spooky. Native Americans called it "Itla-okla" (tree hair), the French mockingly called it "Barbe Espagnol" (Spanish hair), and the Spanish countered with "Cabello Frances" (French hair).

One of the folklore tales regarding Spanish Moss involves a Cuban who came to the Charleston area with his Spanish fiancee in the 1700s to start a plantation. The most striking feature of the bride-to-be was her beautiful, flowing raven hair. As the couple was walking through the forest to reach the location of their future plantation, they were attacked and killed by Cherokee Indians, who were not happy to have these strangers on their land. As a warning for other intruders, the Cherokees cut off the long, dark hair of the bride-to-be and threw it up into an oak tree. As they came back day after day, week after week, they noticed that the hair had shriveled and turned gray but spread throughout the tree. Wherever the Cherokees went, this "hair" followed them, eventually chasing them from their homeland of South Carolina. The tale goes, that even today when one stands under a live oak tree, one can hear the moaning of a woman and will see the "hair" moss jump from tree to tree, defending itself with a large army of beetles.

I love to watch Spanish Moss sway in the breeze. The cardinals and wrens love to play in it, hang from it and flitter through the trees that are full of it. And when one of those famous Florida hurricanes roars through an area, you can be sure there will 20 or 30 trash cans full of Spanish Moss that has blown out of the trees on every property. That's nature's way of "cleaning house" (or "trees") as the case may be.

Pure Florida - Spanish Moss

Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides) is a native, perennial epiphytic herb. It is not Spanish, nor a moss, but a flowering plant. The slender, wiry, long, branching stems (reaching 8m or more) grow as suspended, bluish-gray streamers and garlands draping among tree branches and sometimes telephone lines and fences.

Many homeowners think that Spanish moss kills their trees. This is not the case because the moss is not parasitic. As an epiphyte, an air plant that lives upon other plants, it absorbs nutrients and water from the air and rainfall. It is not a biological parasite in the same sense as some other epiphytes that sap nutrients from the tree. It attaches itself to trees only for support. However, the moss can weigh down and sometimes break branches. Spanish moss can grow strands up to 20 feet long especially on Live Oak and Cypress tree branches. It is greenish silver after a rain, and grayish-silver at other times. Songbirds build nests with the moss, and many other species use moss clumps for shelter, including bats, reptiles, and amphibians.

Spanish Moss, sometimes called Graybeard, long moss, air-plant, Florida moss, con rape moss, wool crape, old man's beard, and grandfather's whiskers, is soft, graceful, eerie and beautiful all at the same time. A romantic symbol of the South.

American Anhinga or Snake-Bird

The American Anhinga is a constant resident in the Floridas, and the lower parts of Louisiana, Alabama, and Georgia. Being a bird which, by its habits, rarely fails to attract the notice of the most indifferent observer, it has received various names. The Creoles of Louisiana, about New Orleans, and as far up the Mississippi as Pointe Coupe, call it "Bec a Lancette," on account of the form of its bill; whilst at the mouths of the river it bears the name of "Water Crow." In the southern parts of Florida, it is called the "Grecian Lady," and in South Carolina it is best known by the name of "Cormorant." Yet in all these parts, it bears also the name of "Snake-bird".

The Floridas are peculiarly adapted for this species, as there the torpid waters of the streams, bayous, and lakes, are most abundantly supplied with various species of fish, reptiles, and insects, while the temperature is at all seasons congenial, and their exemption from annoyance almost unparalleled. The quantity of fish consumed by this bird is astonishing. Anhingas dive completely underwater and spear fish with their long, pointed bills. Then they come to the surface, throw the fish into the air, and swallow it headfirst.

Anhingas have to dry their wings in the sun after a swim. That's when these birds can be seen perched on branches, long wings outstretched drying their beautiful feathers, and by sunning themselves, the sun's rays assist in maintaining the bird's body temperature.

Florida Sandhill Crane

The Sandhill Crane (Grus canadensis) is a large, long legged, long necked, gray, heron-like wading bird with a patch of bald red skin on top of its head. The birds breed from Siberia and Alaska east across Canada to Hudson Bay and to western Ontario, with isolated populations in the Rocky Mountains, northern prairies, Great Lakes, and in Mississippi, Georgia, and Florida.

Two subspecies of sandhill crane occur in Florida: The nearly extinct Whooping Crane, the tallest bird in North America, and the Florida sandhill crane.

Native to China, Japan, Korea, Cuba, and North America, Sandhill cranes prefer inland wetland or temperate grassland ecosystems. A crane fossil approximately ten million years old was found in Nebraska and is structurally identical to the modern Sandhill Crane, making it the oldest known bird species still surviving.

Silver Springs Nature Park Florida

Silver Springs near Ocala in central Florida is the largest and one of the most well known of Florida's first magnitude springs. Main Spring, Blue Grotto, and The Abyss are collectively known as The Silver Springs Group and form the headwater of the Silver River. Below the head spring area, numerous smaller springs add additional discharge within the first half-mile of the Silver River. This scenic river is the single largest tributary of the Ocklawaha River.

Due to its naturally crystal-clear water, healthy submerged aquatic vegetation, abundant fish and other wildlife, and its famous glass bottom boats Silver Springs has become an internationally known attraction. Steamboats in 1860 brought the first tourists to Silver Springs, Glass-bottom boat tours started in 1878 and the attraction remained popular for decades. In addition, the spring's crystalline water has provided the perfect underwater backdrop for many Hollywood films and television programs including six Tarzan films, Seahunt, Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, The Discovery Channel and many others.

Meanwhile studies have found that 90 percent fewer fish are swimming in the spring compared to the 1950s. And the spring's flow has dropped from 790 cubic feet per second (or about 510 million gallons per day) before 2000 to 535 cubic feet in the past decade.
The loss of flow has brought a lot of recent attention to Silver Springs' plight, especially after an 80-year-old Austria-born billionaire named Frank Stronach proposed pumping 25 million gallons of water a day from the aquifer for a 25,000-acre cattle ranch with its own slaughterhouse. Stronach has recently reduced his request to 5.3 million gallons. The state of Florida has yet to decide on whether to approve his permit.

Southern Gothic In Mount Dora Florida

Mount Dora, a charming, one-hundred plus year old historic village in the heart of Central Florida, spills down a rolling hill to the shores of Lake Dora, with a very walkable historic downtown district. Home to a grand old Florida railroad hotel, the Lakeside Inn, and nearly a dozen B&Bs, Mount Dora, Lake Dora and the Dora Canal make a romantic getaway.

The quaint, charming old town, noted for its crafts and antique shops, historical buildings, and beautiful scenery, is the "Antique Capital of Florida", where the Renninger's Twin Markets draw thousands to their Antique Mall and Flea Market, along with downtown Art Shows, Craft Fairs, Music Festivals, Theatre, Antique Shows, Classic Wooden Boat Shows, Sailing Regatta's and Holiday Lighting Ceremonies and Parades. It is also a popular film location. The 1981 movie Honky Tonk Freeway was filmed here. Mt. Dora's Historical downtown and the Lakeside Inn were painted pink for the film, and an Indian Elephant was shipped in and taught to water ski on Lake Dora.

Mount Dora in Florida's Lake County is a place to relax. Go fishing or just sit in a rocking chair on the rambling front porch with a glass of wine in a charming lakeside setting and enjoy the city's great small town atmosphere.
