The philosophers' stone

Is there anything better than relaxing on a rock on a river on a hot summer day? It's a million times better than sitting at some grass because, at least for me, the sound of running water is very soothing.
Large naturally carved, rounded and oval rocks and boulders like "Chocolate Mouth Rock" quietly lay in and on fast-flowing rivers as an unnoticed treasure, the current has to go around them, and holes and eddies often form behind them. Watching the water and listening to its many voices makes one to get lost in time and deep thoughts.
Mother nature rocks as always!

Skull Rock - The Hills Have Eyes

Joshua Tree National Park is not only famous for its Joshua trees but also for its rock formations. Skull Rock is one of those weird looking rock formations.
It began long ago when rain drops accumulated in tiny depressions and started to erode the granite. As more rock eroded, more water accumulated, leading to more erosion until, as time passed, two hollowed-out eye sockets formed and the rock began to resemble a skull. The strange anthropomorphic symmetry that causes stone to resemble bone takes on an appearance of timeless desolation with only patches of scrub or the occasional skittering lizard to break the visual spell.
This gigantic oddly shaped monster skull rock formation is fun to climb about.

Death Valley - A natural geologic museum

Death Valley National Park is the largest American national park outside of Alaska.
Over 130 miles long, but only around 12 miles wide, it is world renowned for its colorful and complex geology. Its extremes of elevation support a great diversity of life, and provide a natural geologic museum that represents a substantial portion of the earth's history. Ninety-five percent of the park's 3.4 million acres is wilderness, providing unique opportunities for quiet, solitude and primitive adventure. Daily summer temperatures of 120 °F (49 °C) or greater are common, as well as below freezing nightly temperatures in the winter.
This region is also the ancestral homeland of the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe. The Timbisha took advantage of the natural order of this region, establishing a pattern of life in concert with nature.
Expect beautiful skies, incredible textures, intense colors and, blistering heat. Death Valley is a great reminder of how precious, sensitive and beautiful our planet is.

Death Valley - Last Light on the Desert

Death Valley, California, looks different each year and sometimes each day. However, it is at its best in the low light of the morning and evening. At the edges of the day, when the light becomes soft and the drama filled skies explode with color, it becomes spellbinding. The desert skies of Death Valley are among the darkest, least light-polluted in the United States, and one of our greatest treasures.
"The treasures hidden in the heavens are so rich that the human mind shall never be lacking in fresh nourishment."
~ Johannes Kepler (1571-1630)

Fine Art Photo Impressions: Sand Dunes - Death Valley's Gold

Fine Art Photo Impressions: Sand Dunes - Death Valley's Gold

Sand Dunes - Death Valley's Gold

The Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes in Death Valley National Park, California, are an extensive dune field that covers a vast area and contains three different types of dunes: crescent, linear, and star shaped. They are named for the spiny shrub that is able to flourish in these dry regions.
Mesquite Flat Dune's highest peaks rise approximately 140’ above sea level, though shifting winds and gravity alter heights and shapes daily. Dunes such as these form over thousands of years as blowing sand reaches an insurmountable obstacle (such as mountains). When sand particles can go no further, wind churns the blocked sand into very fine particles and deposits them at or near the base of the obstacle. An arid climate is the foundation for such a process.
While the converging winds constantly shape and reshape individual sand dunes, the Mesquite Flat Dune field itself does not move.

Death Valley National Park - Eastern California

Spectacular desert scenery, interesting and rare desert wildlife, complex geology, undisturbed wilderness, mysterious sliding rocks, which apparently have been blown across the desert floor by high winds, badlands, and may sites of historical and cultural interest, are just sone of Death Valley National Park's many wonders.
It receives less than two inches of rain per year, and holds the record in the Western hemisphere for the hottest reliably reported temperature 134F (56.7C) at Furnace Creek in July of 1913.
Death Valley is full of suprises (never place your hands on rocks above your head if you cannot clearly see the surface of the rock, as snakes and other cold blooded critters use these ledges to warm up after the cool evenings, and keep an eye on the weather all the time). It contains over 1,000 miles of paved and unpaved roads and no visit is complete by just staying on the major roads of Death Valley. A combination of camping in the backcountry and staying one night at the historic Furnace Creek Inn make the trip a true authentic adventure.

Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes - Death Valley National Park, CA, USA

Despite the fact that Death Valley is a desert, many people are surprised to find sand dunes here.
Rising and sprawling north of CA 190 a few miles east of Stovepipe Wells in Death Valley National Park (DVNP), the Mesquite Flat Dunes irresistibly draw the traveler’s eye. The highest of the dunes here rises only about 140 feet, but the curves and colors of these dunes are as graceful as those in any other range of sand dunes.
The Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes fulfill every childhood dream of what a "desert" truly looks like.

Unearthly world - Death Valley's Zabriskie Point badlands

Death Valley is a land of beautiful yet dangerous extremes. Its story begins and ends with water.
The devil owns a lot of real estate in Death Valley's 3.3 million acres: he grows crops at Devil's Cornfield and hits the links at Devil's Golf Course. In fact, the park is home to Hell's Gate itself. The area's extreme heat and surreal landscape make it inhospitable enough to belong to the dark side. Winter temperatures dip well below freezing in the mountains, and summer readings in the valley average 115 F. The second-highest temperature ever recorded in the world (134 F in the shade) was measured at the valley's Furnace Creek Ranch on July 10, 1913. The temperature of the rocks and soil can be as high as 74 degrees Celsius.
Coffin Peak, Starvation Canyon, Dead Man Pass, Zabriskie Point badlands - Death Valley is clearly a place with a bad history, a good example of the violence of nature where people are losing their lives every year. "This is a harsh environment in summer and any situation can easily become life-threatening," begins a pamphlet distributed by the Death Valley National Park Service. How true!
However, this extremely hot and forbidding land is strangely beautiful with many colorful rocks and canyons, miles of pristine sand dunes, unique evaporative salt features, unearthly, bone-dry, finely-sculpted, golden brown rock badlands, and even a diverse range of wildlife.

Devil's Postpile - Talk about natural wonders

Just a few miles outside Mammoth Lakes, California, Devils Postpile National Monument is home to one of nature's most curious geological spectacles. Formed when molten lava cracked as it cooled, the 60-foot-high, blue-gray basalt columns that form the postpile look more like an enormous, eerie pipe organ or a jumble of string cheese than anything you'd expect to see made from stone. The mostly six-sided columns formed underground and were exposed when glaciers scoured the valley during the last ice age, some 10,000 years ago.
The exceptional aspect of the Devils Postpile is not that some columns are curved, but that in places the lava was homogeneous enough and had a cooling rate uniform enough to have produced many columns so long and regular. Similar columnar basalt is found in Ireland and Scotland.

Death Valley - A Beautiful but Dangerous Place

Death Valley is raw, bare earth, the way it must have looked before life began. Here, forces of the earth are exposed to view with dramatic clarity; just looking out on the landscape, it's impossible to know what year - or what century - it is.
It's no coincidence that many of Death Valley's topographical features are associated with hellish images - the Funeral Mountains, Furnace Creek, Dante's View, Coffin Peak, and the Devil's Golf Course.
Though known as a barren place, Death valley is also a land of subtle beauties. Whether you're there to watch morning light creep across the eroded badlands or an apricot sunset that sends lengthening shadows to play on the Sand Dunes, it takes only a glimpse of it to get a fresh perspective.

Devil's Postpile - Nature's Masterpiece

Devil's Postpile near Mammoth Lakes in California is one of the most unusual National Monuments.
The Postpile is a unique geologic feature that is the result of volcanic lava cooling in such a way as to create hexongal vertical columns that thrust upward where it outcrops from the hillside.
In the 1700s this place was settled by Basque farmers who thought these rocks jutting out of the ground were the work of the Devil. The name stuck until the mid-1800s when it was officially named Devil's Postpile.
Even the fragments of basalt at the base of the cliff are much larger than a person.

Devils Postpile National Monument - Mammoth Lakes - east California

Devils Postpile, known locally as the Devils Woodpile, is located in the Sierras west of the town of Mammoth, eastern California. Although Mammoth is considered to be in the Eastern Sierra, Devils Postpile is considered to be on the western side of the Sierra.
Devils Postpile is a dark cliff of columnar basalt, created by a lava flow sometime between less than 100,000 years ago to 700,000 years ago. The Postpile's columns average 2 feet (0.61 m) in diameter, the largest being 3.5 feet (1.1 m), and many are up to 60 feet (18 m) long.
They look like tall posts stacked together in a pile, hence the feature's name.

Lassen Volcanic Wilderness, California

Lassen Volcanic National Park is 200 miles from San Francisco, in a sparsely-populated, hilly area north of the Sierra Nevada mountains, officially part of the Cascade Range that extends north all the way to British Columbia. It is one of the most unusual places in California, yet is relatively little visited, partly because snow covers most of Lassen Volcanic National Park from mid October to mid June, it is a long way from most other famous natural attractions in the state, and because in some areas Lassen Volcanic National Park looks like a blend of the moon and Yellowstone sulfur springs.
It’s time to see the park through fresh eyes! Since that last explosions, starting 1914 and lasting until 1921, Lassen has recovered a lot. Forests drape the hills and mountainsides. The air is clean and fresh and snaps with clarity. Lakes, ponds, streams and glacier blue water pockets in ice-filled lakes are aplenty.
Sulphur Works is located near the very center of the ancient Mt. Tehama. It is actually a remnant of the central vent of the mountain. Sulphur Works is a first treat to Lassen Volcanic National Park's visotors, and an eye-opener to this unique and eclectic park.

Sulphur Works - Lassen Volcanic National Park, CA

Lassen Volcanic National Park is the home of four types of volcanics, all of which have been active in recent geologic history.
In the 60 years since the last disturbance, the land has largely recovered but much evidence of the destruction remains, and the national park has many fascinating geothermal features including mud pools, hot springs and gas vents. They form part of an impressive mountainous landscape, partly forested, also containing steep glaciated valleys, cliffs, lakes and waterfalls, together with several other volcanic domes and ancient lava fields.
Sulphur Works is said to be the volcanic center of the ancestral Mount Tehama. As in many hydrothermally active areas, the rocks at Sulphur Works in Lassen Volcanic National Park have been chemically altered into bright-colored clays. It is a wonderful, otherworldly type of place, where you half way expect to see a dinosaur or two peering through the steaming ground and hissing vents.

Sulfur Works in Lassen Volcanic Park

Although less well known than many other national parks, Lassen Volcanic National Park, located in north central California at the southern end of the Cascade mountain range, is one of the most beautiful and interesting of America's parks. It is the only national park in the contiguous 48 states containing a volcano which has erupted in the twentieth century. The park's 160,000 acres (150 square miles) contain spectacular mountain lakes, creeks, elevations ranging from 5,300 to over 10,000 feet, many trails, and a wide variety of nearly every volcanic known feature.
Mount Tehama's main vent was probably what is now the Lassen Volcanic National Park's Sulfur Works. The area offers bubbling mud pots, steaming fumaroles, and boiling water. Some of these thermal features are getting hotter and it is thought that Lassen Park and Mount Shasta may join Mount Saint Helens as active volcanoes.

Harmony in Green and Blue - Manzanita Lake - Lassen Volcanic National Park, CA

Manzanita Lake, one of the most beautiful lakes in Lassen Volcanic National Park, lies in the extreme northwest portion of the park.
It was born only 300+ years ago, when the northeast dome of Chaos Crags collapsed in a cold air-cushioned incredibly fast (100 miles an hour) rock avalanche. The rockfall dammed Manzanita Creek, creating Manzanita Lake.
The high-alpine mountain lake is surrounded by dense, wildlife-rich forests, provides exceptional fly fishing on a catch and release basis and is prime bird-watching territory. Its not a place for those seeking solitude, but very pretty nevertheless.
