Goosenecks - San Juan River

Goosenecks State Park is located about 40 miles south of Natural Bridges National Monument near Mexican Hat, Utah.

The Goosenecks of the San Juan River are a series of tight loops - or "goosenecks" - made by the river as it flows towards the Colorado River. Geologists refer to these loops as entrenched or incised meanders. Here, the San Jan river flows for 6 miles yet only covers a distance of one mile. It makes a series of three sharp hairpin turns, resembling goosenecks. The canyon walls reveal the 300-million-year old rocks of the Pennsylvanian period.

The Goosenecks are 300 million years of art work at display. They might lose a lot of press to other river-cut formations in the US, such as Grand Canyon, but this off the beaten path geological formation will make you awe at nature's power.

Monument Valley - Eye Of The Sun

Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park is often referred to as the eighth wonder of the world. Its 30,000 acres straddle the borders of Arizona and Utah and offer breathless scenery any time of the year and almost any time of the day and night. Though Monument Valley is one of the most photographed landmarks in the United States, its varied seasons and spectacular lighting provide ample opportunity to capture new and refreshing visions of the red desert sands, crimson mesas and sandstone towers which spread throughout the area.

Another spot, which you will see during a guided tour into Central Monument Valley is the 'Sun's Eye' (or 'Eye of the Sun') - another fine example of erosion within the Colorado Plateau. It's a cave type natural arch, which means that it has been eroded out of the "roof" of (in this case deChelly sandstone) a rock formation, and eventually collapsed, giving room to this "eye". You can't get close, as this is also a holy spot for Navajo (near Thunderbird Mesa).

Look at the dark vertical lines on the rock - this is called "Desert Varnish", and is a result of specific oxidation on the vertical rocks, when in contact with water and their mineral salts.

Monument Valley - The Untamed West

Monument Valley is a place where time stands still. Change comes slowly to this rugged land of pinnacles, mesas and buttes. And that's only fitting, given that it took eons of wind, rain and other forces to carve the magnificent spires, alcoves and monoliths that have come to symbolize the untamed West.

Some visitors might find the land too alien and wild, almost frightening and overpowering, but there is a strong magnetism to this mysterious, beautiful place. There are legends that the valley still holds secrets - Indian ruins never seen by white men and a silver mine hidden by the Navajos more than 100 years ago.

Monument Valley - The Three Sisters

Monument Valley was established as the first Navajo Tribal Park by the Navajo Tribal Council on July 11, 1958. It encompasses 29,816 acres, and contains over 100 Anasazi Indian ruins. There are over 40 named "monuments" in the valley. Most of the natural monuments in Monument Valley are remnants of sandstone eroded by wind and water. Agathla Peak and some lesser summits are roots of ancient volcanoes.

The Three Sisters are believed by the Navajo to be three Holy People who have turned to stone. The south sister stands 600 ft/183 m; the middle sister is 325 ft/99 m; and the northernmost sister stands 575 ft/175 m. Their names are Faith, who is praying; Hope, who is gazing up at Faith; and Charity, looking like Mother Superior. That's right, Harry Goulding, who named many of the monuments in the valley thought that they looked like nuns.

Sentinel Mesa Monument Valley

Monument Valley is part of the Navajo Nation reservation, a 640-mile drive from Los Angeles, 175 miles northeast of Flagstaff, Ariz., about 25 miles north of the sleepy town of Kayenta. The valley's most famous mesas, buttes and spires stand within the boundaries of the tribal park.

Monument Valley's distinguishing geologic features are the large buttes and mesas that jut up from the valley floor. The valley's vivid red color comes from iron oxide exposed in the weathered siltstone. The darker, blue-gray rocks in the valley get their color from manganese oxide.

Sentinel Mesa is a prominent feature in Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, on the Arizona / Utah state line (Sentinel Mesa is in Utah). It climbs to 6,417 feet (1,955.90 meters) above sea level.

Monument Valley - East Mitten And Merrick Butte

Monument Valley on the Utah-Arizona border - What a beautiful place!!! It reminds me of cowboy movies and the old west.

Monument Valley is a part of the Colorado Plateau located within the territory of the Navajo Nation reservation. The most interesting part of the valley is called the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, or TseBiiNdzisgaii in Navajo language. It is equivalent to a national park. The vast size of the valley, vivid red colours and, most importantly, isolated sandstone towers of various heights and sizes comprise an overwhelming landscape of the Monument Valley truly unique scenery that is hard to forget.

The Mitten buttes - here the East Mitten or Right Mitten butte - are named for their shape, which resembles mittens. The two Mittens form a triangle with Merrick's Butte (right).
