For forty-one years, the name of Father Antonio Dominic Ubach was a familiar one in San Diego. His work included ministry to Indians and to white settlers as far north as San Juan Capistrano, far down into Lower California, and to the interior of Southern California as well. The years have not dimmed the influence of this forceful man; when church history is recalled in Southern California, his name looms large and his deeds are retold.
One of Fr. Antonio Ubach's projects was the beginning of what is today the Immaculate Conception Church in Old Town. 5 July 10, 1868, when the cornerstone was laid, was a proud day for him. Opened for divine worship on July 22, 1917 the Immaculate Conception Church was was not completed and dedicated until 1919 due to the boom that set in for the New San Diego. The Solemn Dedication took place on July 16, 1919.
In 1925 the Immaculate Conception Church in Old Town San Diego was formally transferred to the Order of Saint Francis. The Church has been in continuous operation since that time.
