Munich Theatine Church of St. Cajetan - Theatinerkirche St Kajetan

The high-baroque Roman Catholic Theatine Church of St. Cajetan (German: Theatinerkirche St. Kajetan) adds a touch of Italy to the city of Munich, Germany. Henriette Adelaide of Savoy, wife of elector Ferdinand Maria, donated this church to the Italian Order of the Theatines in gratitude for the birth of the long-awaited heir to the throne, Prince Max Emanuel in 1662.

A native of Turin, the princess distrusted Bavarian architects and builders and thus summoned Agostino Barelli, a master builder from Bologna, Italy, to construct her church. Barelli modelled the church on Sant'Andrea della Valle in Rome, the mother-church of the Theatines. He worked on the building for 12 years, but was dismissed as too quarrelsome. It took another 100 years before the building was finished - the rococo facade was completed in 1768 by François de Cuvilles.

The church's interior is unusual for Bavarian Churches. It is dominated by stucco works of Italian stucco masters. Due to their brilliant white color the rich stucco ornaments have a very light feeling. The high altar has a picture, "The Virgin enthroned with Angels" (1646), by Caspar de Crayer, a pupil of Peter Paul Rubens. The Altar of the Virgin (right transept), has "Holy Kinship" by Cignani (1676) and an "Annunciation" by Desmarées (on the altar-table), while the Altar of Saint Cajetan (left transept), has a painting by Sandrart, "Intercession of St Cajetan during the Plague in Naples".

Theatinerkirche's striking yellow facade stands out, and its two lofty towers, topped by delightful cupolas, frame the entrance, with the central dome at the back.

This is one of the most beautiful churches I have ever been in. It takes your breath away when you walk in and see it in all it's whiteness. Beautiful from the outside but inside its just unbelievable. München is a great city and you can miss a lot. Don't miss St. Kajetan.

The expansive Odeonsplatz in front of the Feldherrnhalle (Field Marshals' Hall), the Hofgarten (Court Garden) and the Theatine Church is often used for outdoor stage events.

Old Town Hall - Munich - Germany

Munich's Old Town Hall - or Altes Rathaus - has graced the Münchener Marienplatz for more than 500 years.

The original Old Town Hall, documented for the first time in 1310, had its Grand Hall (Großer Saal) constructed in 1392/1394. It was completely destroyed by fire in 1460. Between 1470 and 1480, the Old Town Hall was rebuilt in Gothic style by Jörg von Halsbach (who was also responsible for the Münchner Frauenkirche). Numerous changes were made to the building in the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods (late 1500s, early 1600s), but 300 years later, in the 1860s, München's Old Town Hall was reconverted back to its Gothic splendor. Later, in 1877 and again in 1934, two gateways were created to allow traffic to pass through the building.

Large portions of Altes Rathaus were destroyed during World War II. Restorations began shortly thereafter and lasted for several decades. The refurbishing of the tower was finally completed in 1975. The specifications of the original 15th century design were followed closely during the rebuilding process and the result was a building that looked almost like von Halspack's wonderful design.

While the exterior looks plain in comparison with other surrounding buildings, the interior of the Altes Rathaus has been touted as a masterpiece of medieval design. It boasts a beautiful barrel-vaulted timber roof with handsome decorative beams and golden stars. A frieze of the town's coat of arms was installed in 1478.

The 55-meter-tall (180 foot) tower is actually older than the building as it was built in the 12th century as part of Munich's fortifications. It's possible to climb to the very top of it from where you have a great vantage point.

The Old Town Hall houses a fun toy museum (Spielzeugmuseum), situated in four rooms inside the tower, each on a different level. The museum traces the history of toys from the early 19th century toys up to the current modern ones.

Deutsches Museum Munich - Meteorological Tower

To say that Germany is a museum lover's paradise is to understate the case. Germany's 4,000 or so museums cover an incredible range of subjects and inspire imagination, discovery and learning.

The Deutsches Museum (German Museum) in Munich (München), the capital of Bavaria, is proud to be one of the oldest and largest science and technology museums in the world. Since 1925, this Louvre of science and technology has led the way in documenting humanity's innovation. It boasts an impressive collection of historic artifacts, from the first electric dynamo, and the first automobile, to the laboratory bench where the atom was first split. Other highlights of the museum include exhibitions on astronomy, transportation, mining, printing, photography and many, many more. Thoroughly fascinating and amusingly hands-on, its historical exhibits can keep a science lover busy for days. If you bring the little ones, take them to "Kid’s Kingdom", an interactive section with hundreds of kid-friendly activities.

The tower, the symbol of the Deutsche Museum, can be seen from afar. The façade elements barometer, thermometer, hygrometer and anemometer can be readily seen. They represent what the tower primarily stands for: It’s all about the weather. In keeping with the original intended purpose, it still today houses a modern meteorological station high on the tower’s pole. Inside the tower, the Foucault pendulum swings and paintings of the history of industry take visitors back to the early days of the museum.

The Deutsches Museum - Masterpieces of technology and science - is informative, entertaining and lots of fun. Boredom is a thing of the past!

Mullersches Volksbad Munich Germany - A 19th century SPA

A century ago, baths and showers in private households were still largely unheard of. As a result, people used public baths as a means of personal hygiene. The Müller'sche Volksbad (Müller's Public Baths) in Munich, Germany is an Art Nouveau jewel and one of the finest public bath houses in Europe. Opened in 1901, it was the world's biggest and most expensive indoor swimming pool.

The entrance hall to the Müller'sche Volksbad is like an overture to a great work of art, inviting visitors to indulge in the elegant surroundings of new baroque and art nouveau.

The halls and galleries upon both main pools remember of a glamorous castle. The men's pool is covered by an impressive sprung arch and stuccoed ceiling, a bronze serpent slayer and the gold-plated bars on the air vents are nothing short of captivating. On hot days, cold vaporized water streams through them to cool the air down. The small pool is lit up by beautiful art-nouveau and is decorated by elaborate plastering. Gender segregation was abolished in 1989.

Today, guests are enticed by the Finnish sauna with its changing colored lights, regular fragrance infusions and women's' days on Tuesdays and Fridays. The warm water tub of the Latino-Irish sweat bath can be found under a glass dome in a round room which is flooded by light. In one of the alcoves stands the iron virgin, a semicircular cold shower which sprays mercilessly cold water. The Turkish bath (Türkisch Bad) is yet another treat.

Here, in the United States, a day at the spa is considered something the frivolous wealthy do. But in Europe, particularly Germany, the public baths are for the “volks”, the people. Going for a swim at Müller'sches Volksbad, the People’s Public Baths, is like diving into another century, another world even. It's a place of contemplation and relaxation for people who love art nouveau. For a mere $20.00 you can pamper yourself for as long as you like. The Volksbad's Mediterranean feel will convince you that the sun is shining and that you're standing only minutes from the sea. The illusion continues as you climb the steps to begin your day at the spa.

Sunset over Vieux Nice - Old Town - France

If liberty, equality and fraternity are the pillars of the French Republic, those of the French Riviera could be identified as opulence, gastronomy and artistry.

From humble small fishing villages a little over a hundred years ago to modern day celebrity retreats, the Cannes-Antibes-Nice area has evolved spectacularly. This region has enjoyed a renaissance of popularity.

Along this beautiful mediterranean coastline one may find luxury hotels and casinos. Chic discotheques may be found strewn across the cities and towns of this haven while prestige restaurants are known for catering to the worlds affluent. This shoreline enjoys dream chateaus and villas where one can bask in the Mediterranean sun.

Being historic, eventful and housing a number of stately residences, the capital of the French Riviera, Nice, quite easily manages to mix a multiple of facets. It is a happy mix of sophistication and laid-back charm. The turquoise waters of the Mediterranean on one side and the clatter of roulette wheels on the other hug the 4-mile long Promenade des Anglais.

Nice may lack the sheer chutzpah of its neighbor, Monte Carlo, and has less red carpet than nearby Cannes, but Nice has enough Belle Epoque mansions, antique stores and pavement cafes to make a tour a rewarding experience. In a nutshell: Nice is a vibrant, cultural city with a small-town feel.

Nice - France - A multiple of facets

Nice, the fifth largest city in France, radiates a relaxed atmosphere and exudes the climate of the French Riviera with its carefree lifestyle and tangible Corsican and Italian influences. Being historic, eventful and housing a number of stately residences, Nice quite easily manages to mix a multiple of facets.

Like just about every important settlement along this coast, Nice was founded around 350 BC by the Greek seafarers who had settled in Marseille. They named the colony, probably located at the present old town Vieux Nice, Nikaia. In 154 BC, the Greeks were followed by the Romans, who settled farther uphill around what is now Cimiez, site of several Roman ruins. By the 10th century AD, Nice was ruled by the counts of Provence. In 1388 the city pretty much gave itself to the Savoyards and enjoyed relative stability as part of the Kingdom of Savoy which lasted for nearly 500 years, until 1860, the people voted to join France. Perhaps this is why so much of the city’s culture has such distinctive Niçois character, most visible to visitors in language and foods.

Much of what is attractive and alluring about Nice today is a result of the waves of visitors who have come here and shaped their surroundings for their own pleasure. From the Victorian period onward, Nice attracted wealthy foreign tourists. English aristocrats came first, building their gingerbread mansions in the Cimiez quarter and their sparkling Belle Époque hotels along the seafront named in their honor – The Promenade des Anglais.

American millionaires came later and then Czarist Russians. After the Russian Revolution, many came back to establish a Russian community and to build their elaborate mansions around the city’s remarkable Russian Orthodox Church.

Countless important artists came here to work and some, like Marc Chagall and Henri Matisse, stayed – Matisse remaining for the rest of his life.

Antibes - Superyachts of Billionaires

The southern craggy peninsula of Antibes, the Cap d’Antibes, on the French Riviera is an enchanting headland dotted with sumptuous villas. A bastion of wealth, this Cap houses royalty, Russian "oligarchs" and Hollywood stars. Hotel des Etrangers one of the most exclusive hotels in the world can be found on this Cap. Twenty-first century guests and film stars attending the nearby Cannes Film Festival continue to contribute to the almost mythical allure of the Hotel du Cap, which is lush even in comparison to the other high-end resorts and hotels for the rich and famous in the Cote d'Azur.

The historic chateau in Antibes where Picasso painted some of his many famous works and the allure of the film festival in Cannes make residency in this area the envy of many.

The city of Antibes, built between the bays of La Salis and St-Roch, lies to the west of the Baie des Anges facing Nice. It offers many old winding streets and town squares, excellent museums, sandy beaches, a wide variety of restaurants - in short plenty to do for everyone.

Although the city is home to one of the largest yacht ports in the world, and the largest pleasure harbour in Europe sometimes even billionaires struggle to find space to park their most luxurious yachts there, but more extra-large berths will be build in the harbour of Antibes Antibes in the near future. For now, however, the billionaire yacht owners of the world will have to fight for parking spaces for their up to 80 meter long luxury yachts with bullet-proof windows, their own missile defence system, and a mini submarine with internal boarding, on the glistening sea of the majestic old town of Antibes.

Who says the world economy is in trouble .......?

Cannes - Le Suquet - France

Cannes within the French department of Alpes-Maritimes and the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur, provides the lifestyle enjoyed in a city famed for its glorious sunny weather, beautiful beaches and countless facilities for sports and leisure. The city is perhaps the best known of the French Riviera towns and famous for its celebrities, glitzy hotels and, of course, the Cannes Film Festival.

Perhaps less well known is the rich culture and history contained within the confines of the city. The history of settlement in and around Cannes is long, dating from at least the 2nd century BC. By 1035 when the grand castle was built to fortify the city, formerly called Le Suquet, had become known as Cannes, and after the harbour was built in 1835, Cannes began to be the elegant metropolis seen today. Elegant villa-style houses began to spring up, transforming the city from one dependent on fishing and agriculture to one synonymous with wealth and class.

Le Suquet, the old town, boasts panoramic views of the sea, and with cobbled streets and much historic Cannes property, Le Suquet is often considered the centre of all things cultural in Cannes, France.

Above the roofs of Cannes

Galas, regattas, and an outrageously attractive and affluent set characterize Cannes in the Alpes-Maritimes department on the French Riviera. This busy town is host of the annual Cannes Film Festival. Each year in May, celebrities slowly walk up the 24 red-carpeted steps to the Palais des Festivals, their every mili-move snapped by paparazzi and cheered by thousands of onlookers greedy for a brush with greatness.

"Life is a festival." People-watching is the activity that brings most visitors to Cannes just down the road from Nice and Monaco on the Côte d'Azur, and hotel-lined La Croisette provides a fine promenade. And, first popularized by Coco Chanel, Cannes beaches are a huge draw.

Cannes embodies the sweetly scented nation of a life which everybody dreams of living.

Clock Tower - Cannes - France

The city of Cannes in France is situated on the French Riviera in an area of the Provence, called Alpes-Maritimes, and lies on the popular Cote d'Azur.

Cannes is probably best known to most for hosting the annual Cannes Film Festival which attracts a long list of well known and not so known celebrities to the shores of the Riviera.

Perched on the hill of Le Suquet, the old quarter of Cannes, the 16th Century clock tower of Notre-Dame de l'Esperance in Old Cannes stands out like a beacon.

Sitting high, facing east, overlooking the Bay of Cannes and Cannes itself, the church and the clock tower afford great views of the bustling town of Cannes and the bay.

Bell Tower Valbonne Abbey

Excavations carried out in the hills surrounding Valbonne in the Alpes-Maritimes in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Southern France, bear witness to the presence man going back to the first centuries AD in this part of the Côte d’Azur. Roman tiles, fragments of amphorae and dolia and aqueducts that supplied Antibes confirm Roman presence.

In 1199, Guillaume, of the pure Benedictine monastic order of Chalais, made his way to this isolated valley between the Riou Merlet and the Brague rivers where he founded the Abbey of Sainte Marie de Valbonne (or 'Ancien Couvent Chalaisien'), to which a new township was added 320 years later. Set on the bank of the River Brague, in an isolated and wooded valley, the abbey fitted nicely with the Chalaisian rules of solitude and silence in an hermitage structure while being well placed for the monks' activities of sheep farming and forestry, but soon the plague and widespread looting drove the hermits to flee. In the late 13th century and in the early 14th century, all the abbeys and priories were suppressed and the Chalaisian order eventually disappeared because the monks were too poor to survive.

At the beginning of the 16th century Augustin de Grimaldi, then bishop of Grasse, urged residents of neighboring villages to settle again in the Valbonne valley and to build a village near the abbey. The place was called Vallis Bona (the good valley), later Valbonne.

The L'Abbaye de Valbonne is a good example of a Chalaisian Romanesque construction, very close to the simplified Cistercian primitive style. Of modest dimensions because of the relatively small size of the community - from 15 to 30 members at the most - the abbey church is remarkable for the quality of the materials used and the careful workmanship of its construction. Fine-grained stone quarried from a nearby site was cut and precisely shaped with hammer and chisel so that it could be mounted almost without the use of mortar. The monastery buildings have been well preserved.

Valbonne - Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur - France

Valbonne, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur in France, is a very beautiful little old town, built in a peaceful valley bursting with Mediterranean vegetation. It has been beautifully restored and maintained, and is a delightful place to visit.

The central part of the town has retained its 16th century charm and character and during a leisurely promenade through the old town you can see how fondly it has been cared for. You’ll feel like you have stepped back in time with stone fronted houses, ornate doors and entrances, large steps upto the main doors and the many vines and flowers decorating the exteriors of the village houses. Being just an hour and a half away by plane, the French Riviera and villages such as Valbonne have long been a retreat for Parisians taking a weekend break from the hustle and bustle of city life. The laid back lifestyle, more than 300 days of sunshine per year and the varied lifestyle, cuisine and cafes of Valbonne are the perfect get-away. Even winters are mild and you could be sitting in the Place des Arcades in bright sunshine sipping a delightful glass of rose from a provençale vineyard in any winter month.

The town of Valbonne offers everything one could wish for. It is one of the French Riviera’s hidden gems.

Old town of Valbonne, France

The Provence in southeastern France stretches from Orange to Nice. Its gently sloping vineyards and lavender fields are the backdrops that enthralled Cezanne, Van Gogh and Chagall. Many world famous towns and villages are located in the Provence - Cannes, Marsaille, Avignon, Antibes, Arles, and Nice, to name just a few.

Valbonne, which means 'the good valley' in Provençal, is a very picturesque and tranquil village about 15 miles north of Cannes in the hills near Nice in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.

The old village, which has a large Anglophone population, has retained much of its 16th-century character, though mixed with an active town atmosphere. In contrast to the twisty little streets in the hundreds of other medieval villages of Beyond, Valbonne village is laid out in neat, symmetrical rectangles, following the layout of Roman cities. The area is steeped in history, and you can even find the remains of one of the Roman aqueducts which carried water from Sophia Antipolis to Antibes.
A warm and peaceful village where the art of living and conviviality reigns, Valbonne Village offers its visitors numerous occasions to spend some time in a quality environment such as olive trees and grape vines, roses and jasmine.

Face to Face - Crown Fountain Chicago

Crown Fountain is another delightfully strange addition to Chicago's public art stage. The $17 million sculpture, the brainchild of Spanish artist Jaume Plensa, fuses the latest technology with the traditional concept of a public fountain.

In this piece, human participation completes the scene. Water flowing over two, 50-ft.-tall, light-emitting diode (LED) screens at each end - which are encased in a wall of glass blocks - cascades into the 232-ft.-long, 48-ft.-wide, black-granite pool. Stepping into the dark, 1⁄8-in.-deep pool creates the illusion that its participants are walking on water.

The faces of 1,000 Chicagoans are projected on giant screens one at a time. At the end of each person's display, they purse their lips and water shoots out of their mouths.

Who are these everyday Chicagoans whose glowing, 50-foot-tall faces peer out from the Crown Fountain's twin steel and glass towers, slowly blinking and smiling at the city like benevolent giants?
