Spruce Burls Olympic National Park, WA

Olympic National Park on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State is one of the world's most complex ecosystems. More than 3,000 plant-species live in its forests. One of its many extravaganzas lives in the woods above Beach One near Kaloch at the southern end of its 73 miles coastline.
While the Trail on Beach One also leads to a sandy beach, its main interest lies the burls - large bulbous growths - that appear on the Sitka spruce trees between the highway and the beach. The cause of these large knobby growths is unknown, but it is thought that they might be from something carried in the ocean spray, or perhaps a virus.
The woods along Beach 1 feature impressive examples of this eerie natural growth phenomenon: Spruce burls of enormous size.

Sitka Spruce Burls on the Olympic Coast Olympic National Park, WA

The rugged coastlines of the Olympic Peninsula and Olympic National Park are lined with sometimes difficult-to-access beaches and spectacular forests.
The stretch between Highway 101 and Beach 1 is particularly fascinating for tree lovers. The big bulges on Beach One's ocean side spruces – the burls – are non-cancerous tumors. Damage to the tips or buds of the Sitka Spruces causes the cells to divide more rapidly. The ocean seems to be an important factor in forming the burls - the salty air may irritate the damaged buds.
Burls yield a very peculiar and highly figured wood, prized for its beauty as well as its rarity. However, the Sitka spruce burls in the coastal forest near Beach 1 are not harvested for use. Removing the tremendous-size burl would cause the death of the tree.

Burly Phantoms - Spruce Burls Beach One Olympic National Park, WA

The Olympic Peninsula and Olympic National Park in Washington State includes 73 miles of wild coastline and many unique beaches. Beach 1, near Kalaloch, is one of them.
Beach One features fascinating spruce burls. As you get closer to the ocean you will notice that the Sitka spruce have developed large nodules in their trunks. A burl is produced in a tree where an injury or other external stimulus, such as stress, has affected the growth pattern of the tree, causing it to grow a deformity which results in a beautiful wood. Beach One's moist environment seems to encourage these growths.

Serene and pure - Ruby Beach - Olympic Peninsula, WA

Ruby Beach is the northernmost of the southern beaches in the coastal section of Olympic National Park on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. It is named for the rose-colored garnet fragments found in the coarse gray sand.
Between the mighty Pacific breakers and the towering coastal firs, the pebbles and sand of Ruby Beach serve as a barrier between two worlds. So rough, wild, invigorating and untouched this magical stretch of shore calls those that are seeking a soul-soothing, spiritual experience.

Duncan Memorial Big Cedar Tree - Olympic National Park, WA

The world's largest Western Red Cedar tree, Duncan Cedar, is a bit off the beaten path about 8 miles from the Hoh Rain Forest - Olympic National Park on the Olympic Peninsula, WA. This ancient tree has a lot of character. It has a walking size hole. 3 people could snuggly fit inside the tree. If you were ambitious, you could even perform a through trip exiting through a small hole.

Seeing Duncan's tree for the first time is an UNREAL sight. It would still be alive today if all the other trees of similar age had not been clear-cut.

Tree of Life - Duncan Memorial Big Western Red Cedar

About 4 miles off US 101, between Kalaloch and Forks, Washington stands the National Champion western red cedar tree, Duncan Memorial Big Cedar. The goliath tree (exceeded in size only by the redwoods and giant sequoias) was saved by being No. 1; all others nearby finished last, as the surrounding clearcut testifies.
The champion, standing alone in 65 acres of stumps, is a thankful but feeble example of the restraint needed in our use of natural resources. Out of the ancient forest we have carved our own totem of debt, symbolizing what we owe the land.

Seasons of Magic - Hoh Rainforest Olympic National Park, WA

The Hoh Rainforest in northwest Washington, the most lush and wettest spot in the contiguous 48 states, is one of nature's wonders. The only temperate coniferous rainforest in the world, it's a beauty to behold.
There is not a tree, dead or alive, that doesn't host life. Mosses cover the tree trunks and you wonder what is lurking inside ... look just so you might see sprites dancing in the sunlight. Olympic National Park's Hoh Rainforest is that kind of place.

Weathered roots - Sitka Spruce tree Hoh Rain Forest Olympic National Park, WA

The Sitka spruce grows up to 225 feet in height and to eight feet in diameter, and it can live to be 700 years old. Once, the raw materials from these giant trees provided the basis for nearly everything that Native American Indians used. They devised a technique for weaving baskets and hats from materials harvested from Sitka spruce roots and acheived fame for these finely twined baskets decorated with dyed grass applied in a technique termed "false embroidery." And Northwest Coast men are renowned for their tradition of wood carving and painting. They carved everything in wood from the roots of the Sitka spruce tree, from monumental totem poles and canoes, to delicate face masks.

Paradise to lovers of big trees - Olympic National Park, WA

To most earthlings a "tall" tree is 75 to 100 ft. Thousands of Douglas firs on the Olympic Peninsula don't even branch that near to the ground! Presently, the tallest tree known in the whole Northwest is a 326 ft fir.
Olympic National Park and Forest on the Olympic Peninsula in the northwest corner of Washington State (the Evergreen State) truly is the land of the giants. Unless you see them in person and stand next to one of these mammoth trees, it's hard to imagine trees this huge. Standing next to a tree that is 159 feet tall with a circumference of 63 feet is truly a humbling experience.

Trees on the Trails - Olympic National Park, WA

Most big trees in Olympic National Park and Forest on the Olympic Peninsula in the northwest corner of Washington State (the Evergreen State) stand in quiet solitude, sunlight glinting on their trunks, the scent of pines pervading the air - no other emphasis in the forest. Hikers and wildlife alone are affected by their presence. However, the centuries old big red cedar tree in this photograph has endured decades of tourists scratching its reddish bark, trampling its roots, and staring at its ponderous bulk.

Roots - Welcome to Olympic National Park, WA, USA

Olympic National Park (ONP), a range of the Coast Ranges on the Olympic Peninsula of northwest Washington, is home to some of the largest trees on record. Ancient green dreams rising silently into - where? We cannot see as far as they do. Old dark caves in the roots of old dark trees, old homes for bears or foxes or trolls.

Space Needle in serious fog - Seattle, WA

The night was unusually foggy, damp and cold for Seattle. The incredibly dense fog shrouded the Space Needle in mystery.
I was tempted to reach out and grab a hunk of fog, make a fog-ball and throw it out of The Emerald City into the Puget Sound.
