Trump And Wrigley In Harmony

Chicago's skyline is one of the world's tallest and easily ranks among its most magnificent.

Located in Chicago (Magnificent Mile - River North), Trump International Hotel & Tower, also known simply as Trump Tower Chicago or Trump Tower, is close to the Wrigley Building, built from 1920-1924 to serve as the corporate headquarters for the Wrigley Chewing gum Company.

The Wrigley Building is one of my favorite buildings in the city, old or new. The detail is incredible from top to bottom. Trump Tower setbacks pay homage to the Art Deco-era skyscrapers that made Chicago a living architectural museum.

Trump International Hotel & Tower is triumphant addition to the skyline: sleek, supple, and sophisticated. The skyscraper manages to reach for the stars without stepping on the feet of other buildings in the area. To its neighbors, it appears as an equal.

There is a harmony between these buildings as they all seem to play off of one another in some manner.

Old Town Chicago

Chicago's Old Town was one of the city's first historic districts, designated in the 1970s along with its neighbors Mid-North and Astor Street and Kenwood on the south side. Unlike its landmarked contemporaries, Old Town's history and architecture were more modest. The landmark plaques on the streets describe a working-class German neighborhood and even today the enduring image of Old Town is a simple worker's cottage, 1-2 stories high in frame or brick, perhaps with some decorative window hoods and brackets at the eave.

Chicago's historic district retains layers of history, a rootedness, a sense of unique, distinct and coherent place. There is a scale to Old Town, a closeness of building to street and street to cross street and curb to curb that you simply don't find anywhere else in the city. It is not so much about the rope moldings above the windows or the paired brackets and dentils at the eave or even those Furnessian ornaments on Adler & Sullivan's Halstead Houses. It is about a premodern relationship of buildings and streets and narrow alleyways - something not unusual in Rome or the old part of Edinburgh but exceedingly rare in Chicago.

The Three Gossips - Arches National Park

Arches National Park, Moab, Utah, contains the world's largest concentration of natural stone arches. The 73,000-acre region in Utah's arid Moab desert has over 2,000 natural sandstone forms carved by water and wind.

The Three Gossips, also called "The Three Wise Men", located in the Courthouse Towers section of Arches National Park, are comprised of a single mid-sized sandstone tower rising more than 350 feet from the desert floor. The top of the tower is split into three distinct summits, or "heads" of the gossips. The mediaeval looking red sandstone megalith figures seem to conspire secretly while they, whispering amongst themselves, overlook the main road winding through Park, watching the bustle below. They were part of a scene in the movie "Thelma & Louise".

Retreating at the end of the day, with the back-lit Three Gossips silhouetted on an orange sunset sky, is a classic example of how breathtaking things can happen when we understand the way nature operates. This silhouette of one of the Three Wise Men is a double bonus to experience a nature scene like this in person and bring it home to experience it all over again with a photograph.

Old Town Triangle Chicago - 424 W Eugenie

424 W Eugenie is an elegant, vintage townhouse located in the heart of Old Town Chicago Lincoln Park.

History, charm and pedestrian friendliness are only a few of Chicago's Old Town drawing cards. The neighborhood's long list of qualities reads like a What's What of coveted characteristics that many communities would love to call their own. Qualities like nearby beaches, lakefront parks, public transportation, locally-owned shops and restaurants, nationally-known nightlife venues, excellent schools and crowd-pleasing arts shows and festivals. And, oh yes, looming just a few moments' cab or bus ride away, all the pleasures North Michigan Avenue and the Loop have to offer.

Forty years ago, people descended on this urban patch, and particularly its hub at North Avenue and Wells Street, for its reputation as the Haight-Ashbury of Chicago. Today, culture has replaced counterculture as a neighborhood focus. And traditional button-down collars and ties have supplanted hippie beads as preferred neckwear. But the artistic spirit is still here, both literally and figuratively. Old Town Chicago is a neighborhood that knows the contradictions within its boundaries, and lives with them.

Klamath River Mouth - A Bliss Place

The Klamath River is the largest of the North Coast rivers of California stretching over 200 miles from its mouth to the Oregon border. Its mouth is located 60 miles north of Eureka and 20 miles south of Crescent City off 101.

There is a large sandspit across the mouth of the river where it enters the Pacific Ocean. This sandspit shifts from time to time to accommodate the repositioning of the river's mouth. This can be a very dangerous place - especially near the mouth itself - where strong surf and high tides can completely wash across the spit and sweep the unsuspecting into the wild and scenic Klamath River and out to sea. A number of ships foundered on this spit, and it is still hazardous to navigate this portion of the river.

The mouth of the Klamath is a fisherman's paradise. The fish of the Klamath are King and Silver salmon, Steelhead, and resident trout. The Kings start running in July with the best action near the mouth coming in August and running through September. Summer/Fall steelhead start running from the late summer through October. The winter run starts in November and goes through February. There are no crowds here, just whites, Elephant seals, and the occasional Crey Whale, seal lions and big sharks.

The variety of fishing, plus the abundance of wildlife on top of the amazing scenery are the reasons why some people call this a "bliss place." The local name for this area is Requa. That pretty much sums it up. There is a sense of peace, serenity and spiritual vibrance at the Klamath River mouth that is unlike anywhere else.

Chicago Theatre - Grandeur And Elegance

The Chicago Theatre, originally known as the Balaban and Katz Chicago Theatre, is a landmark theater located on North State Street in the Loop area of Chicago, Illinois, in the United States. From 1925 to 1945 the Chicago Theatre was a dominant movie theater enterprise.

When it opened on October 26, 1921, the 3,880 seat theater was promoted as the "Wonder Theatre of the World". The theater's strategy of enticing movie patrons with a plush environment and top notch service (including the pioneering use of air conditioning) was emulated nationwide. During its first 40 years of operation, the Chicago Theatre presented premiere films and live entertainment, but a slow down in business at the Chicago Theatre, caused by economic and social changes during the 1970s, affected ongoing viability.
Now the Chicago Theatre is a performing arts venue for stage plays, magic shows, comedy, speeches, and popular music concerts. It is owned by Madison Square Garden, Inc.

The Chicago Theatre is one of the grandest movie palaces ever built. The structure is seven stories tall and fills nearly one half of a city block. The 60-foot (18 m) wide by six-story tall triumphal arch motif of the State Street fae has been journalistically compared to the l'Arc de Triomphe in Paris. The exterior of the building is covered in off-white architectural terracotta with Neo-Baroque stucco designs.

The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 6, 1979, and it was listed as a Chicago Landmark on January 28, 1983. The distinctive Chicago Theatre marquee, "an unofficial emblem of the city", appears numerous artwork and photography and movies and TV shows set in Chicago, and its neon font was used in the title of the 2002 film Chicago. The entire marquee was replaced in 1994, but retains the look of its predecessor, which was not part of the original design.

Chicago Skyline Of Superstructures

The architecture of Chicago has influenced and reflected the history of American architecture. The third largest city in the USA, is the place where the modern skyscraper architecture was born.

The city's location on the shores of Lake Michigan, one of the world's largest freshwater bodies, adds to the beauty of Chicago's panorama. The collection of over 1,000 skyscrapers, lined up along the beaches, appears as one of the world's largest and most impressive skylines. Chicago's famous skyline of superstructures is always changing, but of all of the places that I've seen in the world, the beauty of the Chicago skyline is unrivaled. It's like a celebrity lineup of famous Chicago architecture.

With its famous skyline of tall buildings, and its breath-taking natural surroundings, the Midwestern metropolis of Chicago, IL is a truly dramatic location. The Windy City with its colorful history and famous landmarks close to Lake Michigan, a body of water bigger than some European countries, is definitely a place where urbanisation meets nature.

Akita - A Dog's Tale

There are two types of Akitas, the original Japanese Akita breed and now a separate designation for American standard Akitas. In the US and in parts of Canada, an Akita may originate in Japan or not. In Japan, however, any dog that is mixed outside the gene pool of the traditional Akita bloodline is not considered "pure," and it is usually classified differently. The name comes from the Akita Prefecture, the particular area where the dog is supposed to have originated.

American author Helen Keller imported the very first Akita dog to the United States. Soon after, military officers who were returning from World War II brought more of this breed. These dogs, however, were considered fighting dogs, and were quickly mixed with other fierce dogs like the German Shepherd and the Rottweiler. By 1973, the American Akita had evolved quite differently from its Japanese ancestors. Large, powerful and alert, the American Akita has a heavier build, and denser bone structure than its Japanese counterpart.

The Akita was never bred to live or work in groups like many hound and sporting breeds. Instead, they lived and worked alone or in pairs, and thus caution must be used in situations when Akitas are likely to be around other dogs, especially unfamiliar ones. In particular, Akitas tend to be less tolerant of dogs of the same sex. For this reason, Akitas, unless highly socialized, are not generally well-suited for off-leash dog parks.

The Akita is intelligent, courageous, fearless, careful and sometimes spontaneous, a large strong powerful dog with a regal bearing and a sense of its own superiority. He needs a firm, confident, consistent pack leader, without which the dog will be very wilful and may become very aggressive to other dogs and animals. With the release of the Richard Gere movie, "Hachiko," too many people may assume all Akitas are of the same temperament. The truth is that Akitas often are that loyal, but they are not a breed for all families and many of them are not good with children. It is certainly not a pet for the faint hearted first-time dog owner.

Dalmatians - A Great Breed For The Right Family

A little known region in Croatia, called Dalmatia, is said to be the historical home of the Dalmatian. There are some records of spotted dogs being present in Croatia, but nothing to support the theory that they originated there.

The Dalmatian, regularly amongst the top 20 popular breeds over the world, was originally used to guard the carriages and horses of the upper class in the 1800's. While the master was busy, it was the Dalmatian's job to ensure the stock and carriage remained safe and untouched. Later, they became military sentries, circus performers, border patrols, the famous mascots of fire departments (thus gaining their nickname - firehouse dogs), and were made immensely popular by Dodie Smith's 1956 children's novel 'The Hundred and One Dalmatians', or the 'Great Dog Robbery' and the enormous success of the Walt Disney movie, 101 Dalmatians. The Dalmatian is also associated with Budweiser beer and the Busch Gardens theme parks, since the Anheuser-Busch company's iconic beer wagon, drawn by a team of Clydesdale horses, is always accompanied by a Dalmatian carriage dog. The company maintains several teams at various locations, which tour extensively.

The Dalmatian dog breed has a personality and temperament that is out-going, playful, highly energetic, and intelligent. It is an independent thinker, and in the right hands this dog is capable of learning and doing anything, and they make good family pets. However, there are lots of poorly-bred Dalmatians around, and these dogs can have serious temperament flaws. In addition, even good Dalmatians need a tremendous amount of leadership and exercise, or they may try to be the boss of the home and may also become very high strung, hard to manage and destructive. Owners who don't understand the necessity of leadership or training will find the Dalmatian an impossible handful.

Half of the people who adopt a Dalmatian puppy do not keep them past the first year. However, if these dogs get what they instinctually need - daily, long, brisk walks or jogs where the dog is made to heel beside or behind the human, never in front of the person holding the lead, plenty of opportunity to run off the leash in a safe area, and very stern, but not harsh leadership - they will make a wonderful pet. Dalmatians form strong bonds with their families and if they are given up, they are known to cry and pine for their owners, and some starve themselves to death.

Fourth Presbyterian - A Chicago Sanctuary

Located in the heart of Chicago, Fourth Presbyterian Church may be Chicago's most recognizable house of worship. Completed in 1914, when Michigan Avenue was little more than a quiet, tree-lined street, the church is now a grounding influence in the midst of vertigo-inducing skyscrapers.

The part of the property most familiar to Magnificent Mile pedestrians is the tranquil courtyard, enclosed by Gothic walls on three sides and set off from the street by a cloister. Standing in the courtyard, with your back to Michigan Avenue and the John Hancock building, this beautiful courtyard feels almost like out of place amidst all the skyscrapers.

If you are strolling down Michigan Avenue, stop and admire 4th Pres. Church's Bedford limestone and rich ornamentation. Its courtyard is a quiet sanctuary from the stresses of city life. The cloisters and courtyard make for a most romantic setting.
