Strand of moss swaying gently with the wind - Tiger Mountain, WA, U.S.A.

Strands of moss (lichen) hanging on old trees, swaying gently with the wind after heavy rain, are one of my favorite memories of the Forgotten Forest near Tiger, WA.

Diablo Lake - Le grand seigneur of North Cascades National Park, WA, USA

Diablo Lake is a reservoir in the North Cascade mountains of north-central Washington state.
These emerald-green glacial waters, as smooth as glass, and the beautiful scenery with late afternoon clouds hanging deep over the mountains are a slice of heaven

Moss-draped trees on Tiger Mountain WT USA

The green of moss is one of the most intense greens we can encounter in our natural environments. And mosses are a very important factor in forests

Tree moss - Green soft beauty

Moss is not a tree's worst enemy. Most mosses are harmless. Tree moss uses the tree branches for support and is not a parasite. Trees provide the perfect combination of shade, humidity and limited airflow allowing moss to pull all the food and moisture it needs from the surrounding air.

Diving Turtle Rock - Flathead River Middle Fork, MT

Montana whitewater rafting is at its best on the Middle Fork of the Flathead River. Rapids with names such as "Jaws" and "Bone-crusher" provide sheer excitement. And in the more melancholic sections, it's easy to get lost in the rhythm of the river as you breathe in the splendor of the scenery and the wildlife.

Glacier National Park MT - View from Going to the Sun Road

Glacier National Park in the northwest corner of Montana on the U.S./Canadian border was home to Native American Indians. Blackfeet, Flathead, Shoshone and Cheyenne Indians roamed through these mountains, hunting, and defending their space. They called these beautiful unusual mountains "The spine of the world".
Going to the Sun: It took twenty years and three million dollars to finish the 52 miles long road. The name of this highway comes from an old Indian legend about a Spirit who came down from the sky to help those in trouble. Then he would go back to the sun.

Rocky mountain bighorn sheep ram and mule deer doe Glacier National Park, MT

Glacier National Park never fails to deliver grand splendor, from spectacular vistas, to majestic waterfalls, to roaring whitewater. But the Park's inherent beauty, for me, is best manifest in the up-close and personal views of its resident wildlife.
I ran into this young couple (Mule Deer doe and Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep ram) and decided to watch them for a while. My kind of heaven!!

The Coyote - Dogs are by far more dangerous

I always feel my day is going to be blessed by the Nature God when I run into a coyote or hear its eerie howl. This member of the dog family is an extremely adaptable, effective and smart surviver. Although only 5-20% of coyote pups survive their first year and 50-70% of juvenile coyotes do not reach adulthood coyotes have survived for thousands of years, and if we take care of them, they`ll be here for thousands more.

Boiling Mudpot - Artist' Paint Pots Yellowstone National Park WY USA

Yellowstone's "Mud Volcano" area is actually labled wrong. Although mud pots are often called "mud volcanoes", true mud volcanoes are very different in nature, and there are no mud volcanoes in Yellowstone NP, Wyoming, USA. However, Yellowstone National Park is THE best place to see mudpots.
Mudpots smell like rotten eggs and sound like a pot of thick, boiling, bubbling, gurgling soup on a stove - plop, plop, plop. Artists' Paint Pots, located 4.5 miles (7km) south of Norris Geyser Basin, are one of the many hot wonders of Yellowstone.

Yellowstone Park WY - Geyser letting off steam

Among the wonders of Yellowstone Park, Wyoming the geysers are the most noted. They spout, and sputter, hiss and throw huge columns of hot water into the air, and then quiet down and get ready for another performance. The steam rises after the water has been ejected, and sometimes the gases and vapor form interesting or funny shapes.

Hymen Terrace Mammoth Hot Springs Yellowstone Park WY

Hymen Terrace is part of Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park's Northwest corner. The Terraces are constantly changing shape and color. Fresh travertine is bright white and as it weathers it changes to gray. Bright colored cyanobacteria and algae which were dependent upon a stable temperature and a flow of water also change as the microorganisms die creating a stark, bleak, flowing kind of landscape.

Grand Teton, WY

New work added:

Grand Teton, WY
Landscape photographers give a lot of attention to the majestic splendor of the Teton Range in the northwest corner of Wyoming mostly because of Ansel Adams classic photographs but also because the Tetons are very contrasty and beautiful. Sixty species of mammals, over 300 species of birds and a half dozen game fish call the Grand Teton area home.

Golden October

Photo of the day

Golden October - Sweet Goldenrod - Wealth on a stem
Attractive Sweet Goldenrod lights up roadsides in late summer. Pinch and bruise a leaf and smell its licorice fragrant. Left in hot water for 10 minutes fresh and dried Sweet Goldenrod leaves and flowers make good and healthy anise-flavored tea.
