Stained Glass Window Cathedral Basilica St Augustine FL

Rather than an outdated old building that's a relic, the Cathedral Basilica in the heart of old St. Augustine, Florida, is still in use. This large cathedral has been the center of religion in the nation's oldest city for hundreds of years. The murals on the ceiling and walls give snapshots of its history.

The Cathedral has twelve beautiful large Victorian stained glass windows depicting scenes from the life of St. Augustine. The windows were made in Munich, Germany and installed in 1909. My image shows the stained glass window in the West Transept. It depicts the "Baptism of St. Augustine by St. Ambrose".

In 1976 the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine was named a minor basilica by Pope Paul VI, the 27th American church to receive that honor. There are only four major basilicas in the Catholic church, all in Rome.

Fountain Of Youth - Living History

On September 8, 1565, Pedro Menendez de Aviles landed on the shore of Seloy, a large Timucuan town that was situated just opposite what was to become St. Augustine inlet in Florida. Seloy, a bustling town that was a tool and pottery making center of activity, existed for millennia, and the Timucua were were intially friendly to the Spanish. But as the cultures existed side by side, difficulties arose, and European diseases took a horrible toll on the Timucua.

Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park celebrates the culture of these proud Native Americans in a reconstructed portion of the town of Seloy. Living History Interpreters help to understand what day to day life was like in the village, how the Timucua hunted, fished, made fine pottery and shell tools, and how they finally slipped away into history.

Although the Timucua are gone, they are not forgotten and we can still learn about the first denizens of the area and honor their lost culture.

Castillo De San Marcos, St Augustine, FL

Castillo de San Marcos is solid evidence of a presence in the New World long before the British set foot on the soil of the Americas. America's oldest masonry fort, the Castillo de San Marcos ("Castle of St. Markus") has overlooked the waterfront of historic St. Augustine, Florida, for more than three hundred years.

Work on the Castillo was begun in October of 1672. A pirate attack in 1668 and the founding of Charleston by the English in 1670 had prompted the Queen Regent Mariana of Spain to approve the building of a powerful masonry fortification to defend Florida. Constructed using coquina rock quarried across the bay on Anastasia Island, the fort took 23 years to complete. A spectacular example of Spanish colonial architecture, the fort was the largest ever constructed by Spain in North America.

Today the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument stands as a remarkable example of Spanish colonial architecture. The oldest masonry fort in the continental United States, the beautifully preserved fortress is 'Classic St. Augustine'.

St. Augustine Lighthouse - Angels And Ghosts

The present day Florida's St. Augustine Lighthouse sits at the northern tip of Anastasia Island directly across Matanzas Bay from downtown St. Augustine. In the evening, from downtown, you can see its beam sweep across those waters and then shift out over the Atlantic.

Erected in 1874, the building was preceded by a coquina stone structure originally built by the Spanish. In fact, the Spanish had maintained a watchtower near the present day site ever since their arrival during the late 1500s. Before the Europeans arrived, of course, Native Americans freely roamed the area.

The Lighthouse has a long history of paranormal activity. Visitors and employees have seen moving shadows and have heard voices and unexplained noises. In 1870, the daughters of Hezekiah Pittee, Superintendent of Lighthouse Construction, drowned in a tragic accident and are now believed to haunt the Lighthouse grounds. In 2007, the SyFy Network's popular show Ghost Hunters filmed an episode here and found that, after a thorough investigation, the lighthouse is, indeed, haunted!

St Johns River Florida - A Chain Of Lakes

The north-flowing St. Johns River - one of the few rivers in the United States that flows north - is one of the laziest rivers in the world.

St. Johns River rises in a vast tract of uncharted and unnamed lakes and marshes near the Atlantic coast in Brevard and Osceola Counties. In Brevard County, the marsh becomes a navigable river, gently twisting as it crawls north. Then the river reveals a tapestry of lakes, bottle-clear spring runs and darkwater tributaries. As the river leaves Putnam County for Clay and St. Johns counties, it widens considerably, in some locations exceeding two miles across. After passing Mayport in Duval County, the longest river contained in the state of Florida ends its journey where it mixes with the Atlantic Ocean.

For hundreds of years, the river has been home to many plant species and marine animals - manatees, largemouth bass and many other types of fish, crabs, shrimp and other shellfish, river otters, waterfowl, blue herons and bald eagles, and alligators and other reptiles. Get out there and enjoy the magnificent beauty and splendor of the near-pristine lands that represent some of the best that natural Florida has to offer.

Messenger Between Two Worlds

Cemeteries have long been known for their tranquility and architectural beauty, creating a landscape of ethereal wonder with headstones, crypts, mausoleums, coliseums, ornate statues and natural growth.

For a myriad of years, symbols have been used by many cultures as a means of identifying cultural phenomenon affecting the plethora of human existence. As with all symbols, the platitude of their meanings can be ample, and with cemetery art, much of it can be conveyed through the use of symbols, characters, design, devices, figures, motifs and patterns. While many of these can reflect religious affiliation, they can often be associated in describing how a person lived while it was alive - from determining its affiliation within society, status, personality, religious identification, and association membership. Tombstone art requires a degree of careful research to uncover the mysteries of the person who once lived.

Christianity, Islam and Judaism all have angels mentioned in their holy books. Other religions have similar beings who occupy the space between the world of people and a supreme being. Cemeteries are quiet and lonely, filled with lost souls. An angel guarding a grave is a messenger between between this world and the next. It makes sure that the lost soul has a way to get through. Sometimes a soul just needs that extra bit of comfort. And the angel's hands folded in prayer are a sign for its devotion.

Ravine Gardens - A Different Look At Florida

It is time to look at the 'Inner-Florida'.
Not to be confused with Florida' many sinkholes - Ravine Gardens State Park in Palatka, FL, is a large ravine that was undercut by underground springs. The springs are visible once you hike up a trail.

It's a ravine, so you can take a driving tour completely around the edge, or park and walk down into and through the ravine. Once you hike down into the ravine, there is a very cold spring. The spring empties into a pond, which has a 'Beware of the alligators' sign. The only wildlife I saw were small fish, frogs, turtles and squirrels, but I did hear the alligator babies making a barking sound as I walked over an all wooden, swinging bridge, so I don't doubt that they are there.

Ravine Gardens State Park is a wonder of history and nature, a quite place to walk, rest or just soak up some of the most beautiful nature.

Fishing At Ponce De Leon Springs FL

The Ponce De Leon Springs State Park is located on 600 acres a short drive from the town of De Leon Springs, Florida. The state park's history dates back to the days of 1779 when the Seminole indians traded with British travelers.

For those really hot Northwest Florida summer days, Ponce de Leon Springs State Park offers a cool natural escape. Located a few miles inland from the gulf coast beaches, this natural springs revitalizing waters seem like a 'fountain of youth' to those who plunge beneath them. Park activities include a boat ramp, canoeing, fishing, hiking, concession, picnic tables, and swimming.

There is no evidence that Juan Ponce de Leon ever actually reached Northwest Florida, but the legend of his search for a spring that would keep him forever young has long captured the imaginations of Florida visitors. It is more likely the Spanish explorer was searching for gold and new lands for Spain, but the legend of revitalizing waters has brought countless travelers in search of their own Fountain of Youth.

Trike - Parade

Three-wheeled Trike Motorcycles are often viewed as the only alternative for motorcyclists who cannot or do not want to balance and hold up a heavier motorcycle. With Ghost Wheels and Retract-a-trike, that's just not true! Equal parts "Easy Rider" and easy chair, trikes have grown in popularity in recent years, expanding from a do-it-yourself niche to a potentially lucrative market for major manufacturers. A a new three-wheeled Harley starts at $30,999.

Trike motorcycles not only provide long-haul comfort and confidence, they are also admired for the commanding presence a three-wheeled motorcycle has on the road. Trikes are a luxurious form of motorcycling. They are big, have beefy suspensions and have all sorts of bells and whistles like heated handlebar grips, cruise control, integrated GPS, gallons of storage and loads of comfort. They are super-steady and seemingly safer machines than regular motorcycles. The stability of three-wheelers doesn't require riders to lean into curves or hold them steady at stoplights, and car jockies see them better and respect them more on the road.

It takes some getting use to a trike, little things like not leaning when you are turning and push-pull to steer, but you will really enjoy it once you get used to it. So get in the wind and enjoy the trike-ride!

Love Bites - Parrots In Silver Springs

North and north-central Florida are brimming with amazing crystal-clear rivers and pools, each fed by one or more of its own natural springs. One such spot is beautiful Silver Springs Park, a perfect day-trip during your Orlando vacation to Orlandos Sunshine Resort or The Fountains. At the Silver Springs wildlife park, these springs pump out enough sparkling clear water to supply the entire city of New York. Of course, this abundance of fresh water attracts a plethora of wildlife as well as visitors eager to see her beauty.

"Wings of the Springs" used to be presented at the outdoor Silver River Showcase Theater. This dramatic free flight show featured a diverse collection of birds. It showcased parrots of the tropical rainforest, comical ducks and chickens, and the magnificent raptors (including hawks, eagles, owls, falcons and vultures). The show was sure to broadend the horizons with an out of the ordinary surprise ending.

At the end of 2013, Florida's park service will take over Silver Springs. When the park service takes over operations, the rides, the parrots and the reptile farm, will be gone, and Silver springs will become the kind of natural Florida that people are hoping to see.
