Madonna With Child

La Paz in Mexico is a beautifulful city on the Sea Of Cortez that deserves much more attention than it actually gets. La Paz is also the capital and cultural center of the state of Baja California Sur.

The impressive stone cathedral of Nuestra Senora de la Paz rises majestically in front of the old Jardin Velasco in the historical heart of this dusty humble Baja Town. The suggestive simplicity of its architectural design resembles that of the churches of the Californian missions. Like most Spanish colonial churches in Mexico the architecture alone is worth the visit.

Rest on one of the simple wooden pews and watch the ebb and flow of the church, so much a part of Mexican life. With its series of stunning stained glass windows, wood-carved stations of the cross, and a precious sculpture of the Virgin Mother and infant child, Our Lady of La Paz is one of the most serene cathedrals I have ever visited.

Sunset Sailing In Cabo

Sunset Sailing is one of the most romantic and enchanting experiences when on a vacation in Cabo San Lucas, especially on board the Buccaneer Queen, a legendary 96 ft. long tall wooden ship, that has been used as a movie set and for TV commercials.

Set sail past Cabo's most famous landmark, Land's End, including the Arch, Lovers Beach and the Sea Lion Colony, visit Chileno Bay and the coral reefs, fall in love with the marvelous sunset at the Pacific Ocean. The Buccaneer Pirate Ship is a lot of fun and a great way to see some terrific beaches and often incredible sunsets.

The call of the ocean is something most visitors to Los Cabos simply cannot resist. Whether it's a leisurely day at sea or a stimulating day of snorkeling in one of the many bays along the beachfront, there is a boat just right for your needs.

Baja California - Desert meets Ocean

Being so distant from Mexico City, separated from the rest of Mexico by the Sea of Cortez, the peninsula of Baja California (English Lower California), northwestern Mexico, is 1,300 kilometers (800 miles) long, making it the world's third-longest. When the Spaniards arrived in the Baja California area in 1539, they believed they had reached a mythical island of female warriors governed by Queen Calafia.

The beaches along Baja California's two coasts vary tremendously. The western coast, which faces the Pacific Ocean, is characterized by cool water, ocean swells and occasional heavy surf. Rips are common all along the Pacific coast, and are the ocean's way of finding its level when big waves send lots of water onto the beach. The eastern coast faces the narrow Sea of Cortez and generally has calmer waters.

These days, locals still refer to Baja as La Frontera, the frontier, because it still remains largely undeveloped, except for the desert peninsula's tip, where Los Cabos (the Capes) is booming. Talk about contrasts!

El Arco - The Arch - Cabo San Lucas

The distinctive landmark of Cabo San Lucas is the rugged 200-foot taffy-colored granite rock formation El Arco (The Arch) that erupts from the sea at the tip of the Mexico's Baja California Peninsula. A visit to Land's End, El Arco de Cabo San Lucas, is undoubtedly one of the most popular things to do in Cabo.

Getting there is easy. Just hail a boat taxi (some with glass bottoms) from the Cabo San Lucas Marina. You can view the iconic golden arches from your boat or ask the captain to drop you off and arrange a pick-up time. En route you will pass lazy sea lions basking on the rocks, and Playa del Amour (Lover's Beach) at the base of the rock formations is a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll.

It is called Land's End because, as the crow flies, if you followed a line south from here, you would not touch land again until you reached the South Pole.

La Independencia De Mexico

Historical and cultural mural by Xafrerate Sotomayer in the municipal hall in San Jose del Cabo, Baja California Sur

In the early nineteenth century, Mexico, with a little influence from the US and France, began talking about a revolt against Spain. Father Miguel Hidalgo from Dolores, Mexico, was a leader of one of the rallying groups. People fought for eleven years before they finally won their freedom. Mexican Independence Day on September 16 is a major celebration in Mexico and is bigger than Cinco de Mayo, which celebrates the unlikely Mexican victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.

The actual day of September 16 is similar to July Fourth in the US. There are rodeos, parades, bullfights, horseback rider performances and grand feasts. Mexican flags are everywhere and the main plaza in Mexico City is packed. Every year, local mayors and politicians re-enact the famous Grito de Dolores, THE most famous speech by Father Miguel Hidalgo. The crowd roars, cheers and chants, and fireworks light up the sky. And if the food can be made red, white and green (like the Mexican Flag) all the better!

Mexicans that live abroad bring their celebrations with them. In US cities with large Mexican populations, such as Houston or Los Angeles, expatriate Mexicans will have parties and celebrations - you'll probably need a reservation to eat at any popular Mexican restaurant that day!

Flying Kites Into The Wind

Every year Cabo San Lucas, Baja California, Mexico hosts a Kite Festival! During the fiesta the sky is filled with the bright colors and swooping wings of kites of all shapes and sizes. Kite flying enthusiasts from all over come to display their colorful flyers.

If you haven not flown a kite since you were a kid, you will be amazed at how far kites have come. Fom their inspired designs to how easily they take to the skies, today's high fliers are a far cry from the kites of yore. You just run down the beach, and your kite magically lifts up and catches the wind. And it stays up, floating merrily on the breeze until you have had enough.

Flying a kite is great fun. It's also very relaxing ... a great option for a free summer activity that you never grow out of.

Very Large Array Radio Telescopes

Because radio waves are so large - about 100,000 times longer than visible light waves - astronomers need colossal telescopes to collect them. Building a single telescope large enough is impossible, so radio astronomers build arrays. Arrays are huge series of telescopes that work together as one telescope.

The Very Large Array, or VLA, is such a telescope. It is one of the world's premier astronomical radio observatories, and consists of 27 radio antennas in a Y-shaped configuration on the Plains of San Agustin fifty miles west of Socorro, New Mexico. The VLA is a very unique place to visit. As you approach the valley, cellular service becomes non-existent. The isolated desert location - specifically chosen to minimize radio frequency interference - is perfect for reflecting on the mysteries of the universe.

The Very Large Array, or V.L.A., is the most powerful radio telescope in the world. The resolution of the VLA is altered by changing the positions of the dishes. The VLA's maximum angular resolution is better than a tenth of an arc second, comparable to that of the Hubble Space Telescope at optical wavelengths.

Texas Longhorn

Longhorn cattle have been a part of the history of North America since 1493 when Spanish settlers accompanying Christopher Columbus brought the first few long-horned Iberian cattle with them to the Antilles Islands (Puerto Rico, Cuba, Jamaica, and Hispaniola).

Overall, it can be said, then, that between 1493 and the mid-19th century, feral longhorns flourished in the Americas. During that three hundred fifty year period, they used principles of natural selection to develop hardiness, disease resistance, ease of calving, strong mothering instincts, and other traits vital to their survival.

In 1964, the first registry was established to perpetuate breeding records and confirm the purity of blood lines for breeders of Texas Longhorn cattle. Since that time, the numbers of registered Texas Longhorn cattle has soared, and by the late 1990s, it had exceeded 250,000. Breeders now exist in all 50 states as well as Canada, Mexico and many other countries.

Emily Morgan Hotel In San Antonio

Listed in the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Alamo Plaza, The Emily Morgan Hotel - a DoubleTree by Hilton is housed in what was formerly the Medical Arts Building.

Famous architect Ralph Cameron designed the thirteen-story tower of reinforced concrete with glazed terra cotta at the three lower and three upper stories in 1924 as the Medical Arts Building. A light colored brick faces the intervening stories. The building's distinctive form and ornamentation are influenced by the Gothic revival that was the fashion for skyscrapers nationwide in the 1920s. The panels between the first and second stories, as well as the marquee over the main entrance, are of cast iron painted to simulate bronze. The roof is copper with wood ribs. Terra cotta gargoyles depicting figures with various ailments, including toothaches and other medical troubles, are perhaps the most interesting architectural feature of this unique building.

In 1976, the Medical Arts Building was converted into a modern office building. In 1984, the building was adapted for use as a hotel and The Emily Morgan Hotel was founded.

St. Ann And St. Joachim Stained Glass Window

Stained Glass Window San Fernando De Bexar Cathedral in San Antonio, Texas
Here:
St. Ann (left) and
St. Joachim (right)

The origin of the name "Tejas" or "Texas" comes from the Spanish pronunciation of a Hasinai Indian word meaning "friends" or "allies."

On March 9, 1731, the construction of the first cathedral that took the name of San Fernando marked the birth of the first municipal government of the state of Texas and one of the oldest in the United States. Around that church, the town of San Fernando de Béxar was born, and later became what today is the city of San Antonio. The San Fernando De Bexar Cathedral is relatively simple compared with others built by the Spaniards in their colonies.

But San Fernando Cathedral is more than a just a historical milestone which understandably makes any Texan really proud. It is a house of God, a temple which gathers all Catholics under the same roof and welcomes all who want to find refuge.

St. Michael And St. Raphael

Stained Glass Windows San Fernando De Bexar Cathedral in San Antonio, Texas
Here:
St. Michael left, and
St. Raphael right

Founded in 1731, the San Fernando Cathedral in San Antonio, Texas, was organized in 1731 by a group of Canary Islanders, and the building went through several incarnations before major construction on its current Gothic Revival visage was consecrated in 1873.

The massive cathedral has a distinctive European feel, with towering Gothic arches and a gilded 24-foot-tall altar. Glistening through San Fernando De Bexar Cathedral, nine enormous stained glass windows depicting 18 saints, awaken and nourish the mystery of Christ.

San Antonio River Walk

The San Antonio River symbolizes the heart and soul of the city. Hundreds of years ago, the river was a gathering place for Native Americans. The first civilian Spanish settlers built their homes here in the 1700s. In the late 1920s the people realized what an asset the river could be to the growing city.

The San Antonio River Walk, or Paseo del Rio, was built and later extended, and is now 15 miles of sidewalks and paths. It is a verdant oasis of cypress-lined paved paths, arched stone bridges and lush landscapes that gently winds through the city center. Tucked quietly below street level and only steps from the Alamo, the San Antonio River Walk provides a serene and pleasant way to navigate the city. The River Walk is the largest urban ecosystem in the nation.

Ernie Pyle once described the River Walk as "The American Venice" and it's easy to see why. If you tried to imagine a place where the sights, sounds and flavors of Native America, Old Mexico and the Wild West blend effortlessly with the hustle and bustle of a modern city, it would probably look a lot like the San Antonio River Walk.

San Antonio Church Mission San José

Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo, the largest of the Texas missions, was founded on February 23, 1720 and moved to its current location between 1721 and 1724 along the San Antonio River.

When Father Morfi visited Mission San José in 1777, the compound consisted of the indigenous quarters along the outside, the granary along the north wall, soldiers quarters, a two-story convento, workshops, and a stone church with a carved stone sacristy window (Rose Window) and carved stone façade. Morfi described Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo as the "Queen of the Missions". The carved stone façade of the church has been described to rival those of Europe with intricate carving and use of negative space. The soft native limestone from further upstream along the San Antonio River provided a unique carving opportunity - stone soft enough to carve with wood-carving tools.

While Mission San Jose now sits just south of downtown San Antonio, when one stands in the restored Mission, the "Queen of the Missions" continues to provide the visitor with the feel of the mission compound.
