Utah's Iconic Monument Valley

Monument Valley, one of the most spectacular sights in the southwestern United States, is located in northeast Arizona although the entrance is actually in Utah.

Everyone is familiar with the signature rock formations of Monument Valley but when you spend time there, you will realize that there is so much more to see and experience. Monument Valley is not a State or National Park. It is a Navajo Tribal Park. Navajo families have lived in the valley for generations. Learning about the Navajo people is just as enjoyable as touring the monuments of the valley.

There is much to see along the Valley Drive, even if many of the views are of the same formations, just at different angles, as some of the narrower buttes look quite different from one side compared to the other. This part of Monument Valley is one of the most impressive large-scale landscapes anywhere in the Southwest, rivaling places like the Grand Canyon or Yosemite for the variety of scenes.

Magnificent Monument Valley

Monument Valley is one of the most iconic and enduring landmarks of the American "Wild West." Its isolated red mesas, buttes and sprawling, sandy desert has been photographed and filmed countless times.

Crimson mesas and surreal sandstone towers rise hundreds of feet into the air, some as tall as 1,000 feet. The dramatic natural and rich red hues dominate the entire region that spans the border between Arizona and Utah. Both the beauty and the sheer size of the valley provide majestic scenery that overwhelms the senses as the play of sunlight and shadows holds a person spellbound. Monument Valley Tribal Park is not as much a valley as a wide flat plateau, interrupted by crumbling formations that are the last remnants of the sandstone layers that once covered the entire region.

This image (looking south) is what one sees approaching Monument Valley from the north on Highway 163 in Utah after crossing the San Juan River (marking the northern border of the Navajo Reservation.)
The three formations are
- Left: "Castle Butte" (with other named formations immediately adjacent)
- The twin spires in the middle are "The King on his Throne"
- and the large formation on the right is "Brigham's Tomb" (also known as "Saddleback Butte") which marks "Monument Pass", the northern entrance to Monument Valley.

Comb Ridge Utah Near Mexican Hat

Just when you think you can't be surprised by another rock formation another one shows up right around the corner. In this land of sweeping mesas, massive buttes and towering rock sires, Comb Ridge is something else again.

Tilted at an angle of almost 20 degrees, Comb Ridge is an ancient rock formation tapered along the desert landscape of southeastern Utah. Basically it is a rock wall, or expressed more correctly, a monocline a big step in the earth's surface. It stretches north-south for almost 80 miles from the Abajo Mountains north of Blanding, Utah, all the way to Laguna Creek east of Kayenta in Arizona. In 1976 it was designated a National Natural Landmark. It seems at its most impressive between Bluff and Blanding, roughly, with 191 and 95 cutting through it. When you are approaching it from the bottom end you feel the way an ant might feel when it approaches your garden wall.

In stunning colors, this wall rises above green Comb Wash down below. From the top end you approach an undulating edge till you see the road cuts through it and then dips to the bottom far below. The colors of this "indian blanket" design are absolutely stunning; natural rock art in psychedelic pastels: this is a very special sight. The first time you approach it you simply have to go WOW!!! and your jaw drops.

Antelope House Ruins Blending In

Canyon de Chelly National Monument on Navajo Nation land near Chinle, Arizona, is truly a Gem of the Southwest United States. The natural beauty is unsurpassed, with breathtaking sandstone walls, wild animals, and Navajo farms and flocks. A sense of history mingles with this beauty, with ruins and rock art that stretch far back into human history.

The Antelope House Ruin exists of ancient ruins set in a secretive alcove near the canyon floor. The entire complex is made up of two main building areas that border a central type plaza structure. The area was once inhabited by the Kayenta Anasazi Indians from about 1050 AD to 1270 AD. Researchers and archaeologists have determined that the complex once consisted of over 91 rooms and reached four stories in height. There were two or three large kivas and several smaller kivas. The walls were once plastered on all sides by the tribe members to protect the masonry. Today, some of the remaining walls boast decorative paintings and designs. There are paintings of antelope grazing on a nearby cliff which aids in giving the ruins its appropriate name.

The area is full of places to explore and venture. Some of the caves are open to the general public. Some local artists can be seen sitting on a rock painting the landscape or an antelope feeding off in the distance. Great Navajo art has been created from this location and is on display at many area studios.

Canyon De Chelly From Sliding House Overlook

There are ten named overlooks in Canyon de Chelly National Monument, either right beside the road or along short trails; seven of Canyon de Chelly along the South Rim Drive and the other three of Canyon del Muerto along the North Rim Drive.

Although broadly similar, each overlook offers somewhat different views, of distant ruins, rock formations and junctions with tributary canyons, so all are worth a visit. Apart from White House Ruins, the ancient sites along the north rim are larger and more intricate. A leisurely drive along both rims, stopping at all viewpoints, takes about four hours.

Reached by a side road, Sliding House Overlook is close to several ancient structures, most visibly Sliding House Ruin, a medium-sized site in a shady alcove, built on a sloping surface and giving the appearance of sliding downwards. The overlook is situated on a projecting section of the canyon rim edged by sheer cliffs on three sides, and so allows different views from each edge. Canyon de Chelly hereabouts is particularly steep-walled and spectacular.

Canyon De Chelly White House Ruins

Canyon de Chelly National Monument is an amazing place. Two beautiful narrow 1,000 feet deep canyons converge about three miles from the park headquarters. Canyon de Chelly runs east-west, and Canyon del Muerto runs northwest.

As you proceed up the canyons from the park headquarters the first set of ruins you encounter are called First Ruin and Junction Ruin. Both are fairly small. First Ruin had ten rooms and two kivas. Its sister site is called Junction Ruin and it is located on the north side of Canyon de Chelly, where Canyon del Muerto branches off. Thus the name, Junction Ruin. Junction Ruin had fifteen rooms and one kiva. Both of these cliff dwellings were developed during the period called Pueblo III.

Canyon de Chelly typifies the colorful Southwestern Indian country. Adding to this atmosphere are the present-day Navajo Indian homes that are scattered along the canyon floors.

Canyon De Chelly From White House Ruins Trail

The White House Ruins Trail is one of the rare hikes in Canyon de Chelly where a Navajo guide is not required. The Trail is 1.5 miles each way - 1000 feet in vertical drop The trail - traversing many different layers of rocks.

The views are just amazing ... spectacular ... breathtaking ... awesome! The canyon bottom is beautiful and green. Cottonwood tree leaves shimmer in the sun and sheep wander about, herded by their energetic dogs, horses running free. The Silence, the Wind, the Peace, the Power, mountain goats and hawks, and the different colors and shapes of the rocks, all give a different perspective to the shear cliff walls and vegetation.

The feeling in the canyon is very different from what you see at the top. It is a great experience, and with little imagination one can really think to be transported in the old Far west in this natural wonder where indians ride their wild horses in these mountains.
