Lemon Squeezer - Academy of Fine Arts Dresden

Designed by architect Constantin Lipsius by the order of Prince Elector Frederick Christian of Saxony, and built between 1887 and 1894, the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts occupies three buildings in neo renaissance style. Its distinctive feature, a large glass dome – dubbed the “lemon squeezer” on account of its striking shape – is one of Dresden’s landmarks.
The academy's exhibition rooms are fantastic and laden with history. Gutted by fire during a bombing raid of Dresden during the Second World War, they were not useable until after 1990, once they had undergone careful restoration.
Today the Academy of Fine Arts (Hochschule fuer für Bildende Künste) in Dresden is again one of the most important fine art schools in Europe.

Dresden Academy of Fine Arts

The fine arts have enjoyed a long tradition in Dresden. Even back in the Middle Ages important artists of the time were active in Dresden with commissions from the Saxon court.
Founded in 1764, the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden is one of the oldest art academies in German-speaking regions. Sitting on the banks of the river Elbe the Neo-Renaissance building of the Academy was constructed between 1891-94; it is adorned with a glass dome. At the top of the dome stands a golden angel (Pheme or Fama) who is blowing the trumpet of fame.
Dresden's Academy of Fine Arts (the former Royal Academy of Arts) houses one of Germany's best art schools, the Dresden College of Fine Arts (Hochschule fuer für Bildende Künste Dresden), which offers students a wide variety of courses in fine arts. Well-known artists from the global world of art are teaching at the Academy.

Zwinger Dresden - Carillon Pavilion - Caution fragile !

Zwinger's Carillon Pavilion (German: Glockenspiel Pavilion) is a very special treat. The almost symmetric pavilion was originally named 'Stadtpavillon' but it was renamed after a carillon made from finest Meissen Porcelain was installed on its Sophientor in 1933.
Every 15 minutes Meissen Porcelain bells record the passage of time by playing an especially for the carillon composed melodie, and, depending on the season, well known melodies like Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons", Humperdinck's "Evening Prayer" ("Abendsegen" - "Hänsel und Gretel") or Carl Maria von Weber's "Jägerchor" (Freischütz) can be heard at special times.
The wings to the right and left of the 17th century pleasure palace are home to the Dresden Porcelain Collection, the largest special collection of its kind in the world, extraordinarily high in quality and with 20,000 individual pieces of ceramics. The exhibits date back to the days of the Chinese Ming period of the rich resources of the reign of Emperor Kang Xi to Japanese Imariund Kakiemon porcelains of the early 17th und 18. century.

Augustus II the Strong - A legend lives on in Dresden

Frederick Augustus I or Augustus II the Strong - 1670 to 1733 - (German: Friedrich August II der Starke) was Elector of Saxony (as Frederick Augustus I) and became King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania (as Augustus II). He was called "the Strong" for his bear-like physical strength and for his numerous offspring (only one of them his legitimate child and heir).
August is perhaps best remembered for his love of the arts and architecture. He had beautiful palaces built in Dresden, a German city that became renowned for extraordinary cultural brilliance. He introduced the first public museums and started systematic collection of paintings.
The Bronze statue of the king, holding the constitution of 1831 in his right hand, stands on a granite pedestal with female figures sitting on each of the four sides representing the virtues of Fait, Wisdom, Justice and Strength.

Zwinger Dresden Rampart Pavilion - Masterpiece of Baroque architecture

The Dresden 18th-century Zwinger Palace, one of Europe's foremost cultural centers, was mostly destroyed by the carpet bombing raids of 13-15 February 1945 during World War II. Now carefully restored it is one of Dresden's major landmarks.
Built 1710-28 and originally designed as an orangery and a setting for court festivities, it was later used for exhibitions. It houses several noted museums, the most famous of which is the Semper Gallery. The highlight of its collection of more than 2000 paintings is the Sistine Madonna by Raphael.

Dresden's Church of our Lady - Reminder of peace

The first church "Zu unser lieben Frau" was built in the 11th century in romanesque architecture. It was outside the city walls and surrounded by a grave yard. The modern Dresdener Frauenkirche was built as a Lutheran (Protestant) parish church.
The church's most distinctive feature was its unconventional 96 m-high dome, called die Steinerne Glocke or "Stone Bell". The dome proved to be extremely stable. Witnesses in 1760 said that the dome had been hit by more than 100 cannonballs fired by the Prussian army. The projectiles bounced off and the church survived. On 13 February 1945, Anglo-American allied forces began the bombing of Dresden. The church withstood two days and nights of the attacks. The temperature surrounding and inside the church eventually reached 1,000 degrees Celsius. The dome finally collapsed at 10 a.m. on 15 February. The building vanished from Dresden's skyline. For 40 years the 42 feet high pile of rubble was a reminder of the destructive powers of war.
The bronze statue of reformer and theologian Martin Luther in front of the church survived the bombings. has been restored and again stands.
On 30 October 2005, after 13 years of rebuilding, Dresden's Church Of Our Lady was restored and reconsecrated. For the first time since the last war, the completed dome and its gilded cross grace Dresden's skyline as in centuries prior.

Dresden Church of Our Lady and New Market

For over 200 years, the "Stone Bell," the dome of the Frauenkirche, towered over the inner city of Dresden. It gave the city a distinctive silhouette, until the bombings at the end of the Second World War destroyed the church.
In GDR times, the ruin and the rubble were treated as a memorial against war. Reconstruction began in 1994 and took 11 years.
About two thirds of the 180 million Euro used to reconstruct the baroque Church of Our Lady came from about 600,000 private donors from all around the world.
The consecration of the restored Dresden Frauenkirche in 2005, 60 years after its destruction, made it clear that wounds can heal and that injustice and violence can be overcome.

Hausmannsturm - Lookout of a castle with stunning views

For fine views of Dresden, Germany, head up the Hausmannsturm. The tower is the main tower of the Dresden Palace complex. From 1674 to 1676, it was expanded to a height of 100 meters.
Throughout every historical era, observation towers were erected. While the Dresden's historic buildings can be experienced in an up close and personal way during a walking tour, visiting this observation tower also affords a view of Dresden's bustling city life. It opens up the city's riches in a completely new way.
Numismatists might like to pop into the Münzcabinett (Coin Collection), also in the tower.

Altar Dresdener Hofkirche

Though rebuilt sooner than the Dresdener Frauenkirche (Church of our Lady) the original Dresdener Catholic Church of the Royal Court (Hofkirche) was built not only after the impressive "Stone Bell" but in response to it.
Step inside! Its cool and simple splendor - much white, gold, porcelain, marble and natural light - radiates quiet grandeur. Of particular interest is the high altar. It is made of local marble and gilded bronze ornaments. The six large silver candlesticks (1752), each foot adorned with the figurative allegories of the three theological virtues of faith, hope and love, are 2.15 meters high. The crucifix (1756) of this silver treasure has a height of 4.20 meters and weighs 250 pound.
The Hofkirche at the Palace Square in Dresden is a prime example for the beauty of late Baroque architecture.

Augustus Bridge Dresden Germany

Augustus Bridge (Augustusbrücke is the oldest bridge in the city of Dresden, Germany, crossing the Elbe river. The first documented bridge at the same location dates back to 1070. Between 1727 and 1731, under king Augustus II the Strong of Saxony, a new sandstone bridge was built. This bridge was replaced by the present bridge with 9 arches.
The impressive bridge, a massive arch bridge, consists of a core of compressed concrete, faced with sandstone. After being destroyed during World War II, the span was rebuilt in its original form. Today its official name is Friedrich-August-bridge.

Hausmannsturm in Dresden Germany

Dresden is located in former Communist East Germany (GDR), just a short distance from Poland. Hausmannsturm (German: Hausmann Tower) is the main tower of Dresden's Royal palace complex. Like all landmarks in Dresden, the Royal Palace was destroyed in 1945.
The total destruction of everything except its outer walls nearly provided the perfect excuse for ideologically motivated demolition. Had the Hausmann Tower not stood so close to the Court Church, it would have been blown up as early as 1945 or 1946. Restauration did not seriously gather momentum until the 1990s, when the tower regained its peak.
The Housemann Tower is still one of Dresden's most striking buildings. Climb up the 222 stairs and enjoy a fantastic view of the city. It has a viewing platform, from where visitors have a great view over Dresden's historic center.

Martin Luther Monument Dresden

The German Augustinian monk and professor of theology Martin Luther strongly disputed the claim that freedom from God's punishment of sin could be purchased with money.
In 1517 the priest initiated the Protestant Reformation by nailing his “Ninety-Five Theses” to the church door in Wittenberg, Germany. This led to a split in the Church, dividing it into the Protestant and Catholic branches.
Luther also was the first to translate the Bible into German, so that everyone was able to read and understand it, stands is a tribute to.
The in 1885 erected Martin Luther statue near the restored Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) in Dresden, Germany, survived the firebombing of Dresden during World War II.

A church filled with music - Church of Our Lady Dresden

The organ in the Dresden Frauenkirche, built by the organ builder Daniel Kern from Strasbourg, combines the organ-building tradition of Gottfried and Andreas Silbermann with the impressive versatility of the French Romantic style. It meets both: The new and the historic requirements for church music.
Of the 4,876 pipes, of which only a small part is visible, the smallest measures less the one centimetre and the biggest measures over five meters. 130 concerts and musical events every year, more than 180 services with church music, more than 500 devotions with organ music: The Dresdener Frauenkirche is filled with music all year round.

Bloodhound - Governed by a world of scents

Bloodhounds are "the Clydesdales of the hound group", big, rambunctious, incredibly strong clowns, not exactly stars in the obedience ring.
When a Bloodhound is on a trail, his head may drop, folds of skin cover his eyes, his ears sweep the ground - he is literally blind.
The Bloodhound is not a dog that one simply owns or belongs to; it is a breed that totally envelopes everyone who even casually becomes involved.
