Petroglyph Canyon - Valley of Fire

Starting about 2,000 BC small groups of people lived in Nevada's Valley of Fire region. They depended much on the bighorn sheep as their main source of food. They used the atlatl, a notched stick, for hunting, later replaced by bow and arrow.
There are several sites with petroglyphs in Valley of Fire's Petroglyph Canyon, including Atlal Rock. Their meanings are mostly unknown.

Spectacular red rocks - Sedona AZ

Geologically, the history of Sedona began about 500 millions years ago. Over a period of 300 million years, the land was virtualy ocean bottom and coastal plain. Between 200 and 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the land.
Around 3 million years ago, the Colorado Plateau uplifted. Since then, erosion by wind, rain and snowmelt has created Oak Creek Canyon and exposed the layers of sediment to form the spectacular red rock formations we now see in Sedona.
Human pre-history began in Sedona about 4000 years BC when hunter-gatherers roamed and settled in the area. Between 900 and 1350 AD, a more advanced civilization, known as the Sinagua, began building pueblos and cliff houses. By 1400 AD the pueblo builders had moved on, and at about the same time Yavapai and Apache peoples began to move in.

Sensuous Sandstone

Northern Arizona and southern Utah are abundant in scenic landscapes. Strong winds carry fine desert sand that erode the rocks in the region to create exquisite shapes and patterns. Driving in Northern Arizona the roadside is spotted with rocks like in this image.
This unusual landscape is a place you're sure to remember for a lifetime.

Valley of Fire - Picturesque desert

Valley of Fire, Nevada, is beautiful and unique. It is world renowned for its unusual sandstone formations and red sand (it really is red, not bright brown.)
If you are a trekkie, you may recognize many of the early Star Trek sets. Several Star Wars scenes were shot here as well.

Window to the past - Montezuma Castle

Gaze through the windows of the past into one of the best preserved cliff dwellings in North America. This 20 room high-rise apartment, nestled into a towering limestone cliff, tells a 1,000 year-old story of ingenuity and survival in an unforgiving desert landscape.
Marveling at this enduring legacy of the Sinagua culture reveals a people surprisingly similar to ourselves.

I am Aztec

Montezuma Castle National Monument is an imposing and majestic cliff dwelling in central Arizona dating back to the 12th century.
Supposedly built by Sinagua Culture farmers 800 years ago, Montezuma Castle is now one of North America's best preserved Native American Indian Cliff Dwellings. Elegantly tucked into an alcove above the Verde Valley, carved into the limestone walls, this ancient 'high-rise apartment building' still stands guard over the valley below.

Coral Pink Sand Dunes Utah

Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park right off the Utah-Arizona border is a wide-sweeping expanse of brilliantly colored sand dunes. They are believed to be between 10,000 and 15,000 years old.
Composed of fine, rose-colored sand granules it is a wondrous outdoor playground for hiking, OHV riding, camping, photography and sightseeing.
And the rest of the area? Red sandstone cliffs. Sapphire skies. Jade forests. 3,730 acres of breathtaking scenery in southern Utah’s Color Country.

Colorado River at Marble Canyon AZ

Colorado River from the old Navajo Bridge over Marble Canyon near Lee's Ferry, Navajo Reservation, Arizona.
Before 1927, when they began construction on Navajo Bridge, a ferry was the only way to cross the Colorado River, and for many miles around, the only stretch of the river with waters calm enough to allow for ferry service was right here at Marble Canyon.
The scenery here is nothing short of remarkable, especially on a sunny day when the sky is blue, the rocks are blazing red, and the Colorado River at the bottom of a steep canyon is a cool turquoise/blue.

The Condor's Land

Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, a monolith towering between Fredonia and Page in the far north of Arizona, is one of the most spectacular and extensive, unusually colorful cliff faces in the US which stretches out for 294,000-acres.
Much of this wilderness is remote and isolated, a place for people to explore by themselves. Whether history, scenery or wildlife gets you moving (the area is home to at least twenty species of raptors including endangered California Condors), Vermilion Cliffs has something for every Arizona traveler. But most travelers on their way between Zion National Park, the Grand Canyon and Lake Powell, zip by without stopping to explore the huge red hills, deep, rugged canyons, high cliffs and spectacular sandstone formations of the scenic, unspoiled Vermillion Cliffs region.

Finally we found a new home

Just north of the Navajo Bridge north of Flagstaff Arizona near the Vermilion Cliffs monolith, amongst, next to and near crumbling rocks and oddly shaped giant boulders that litter the landscape, are several buildings, some of them literally built into the cliffside. These odd structures are the remains of a lodge that stood here about 80 years ago.
In 1927, a woman's car broke down as she travelled through this area and she was forced to camp overnight. Aparently she liked this harsh and barren moonlike landscape so well that she bought property and stayed. She started serving food to passers-by in return for labour. Pretty soon she had a full-scale restaurant on her hands and added a hand gasoline pump for some of the earliest motorists on their way to Grand Canyon's North Rim.
There are still families living in these shingle-roofed rock houses that cling to gigantic boulders - however unofficially.

Once in a lifetime

Christine Till - CT-Graphics
Agaves bloom only once in their lives, in 3 to 10 years in an agave-appropriate climate, otherweise when they are between 10 and 25 years old, although certain species can take up to 100 years before they flower. And although a 15' tall stalk is already impressive, their stalks can get 25 to 30 feet high!
The original Agave plant blooms and dies with a ring of smaller offsprings around it.
The Agave is truly a magnificent plant!
Try Tequila, derived from the Blue Webber Agave from 1 of 3 regions in Mexico. The next thing you know you'll lie flat on your back, a mysterious rose thorn embedded in sapphire on a chain around you neck, you can't remember your name, and your mother is running the entire country.

The Spell of Antelope Canyon

Sit and watch the sun work its wizardry and create a fantastic show in upper Antelope Canyon. An ever changing drama of lights and darks slowly traverses along the canyon walls like an ethereal paint brush and a palette of incandescent colors, creating three dimensional masterpieces.
It is awe-inspiring, much like many of the great churches and mystical spots throughout the land.

Walk in beauty

Nature is so powerful, so strong. Capturing its essence is not easy - your work becomes a dance with light and the weather. It takes you to a place within yourself.

Layers of Light

Light has no weight,
Yet one is lifted on its flood,
Swept high,
Running up white-golden light-shafts,
As if one were as weightless as light itself,
All gold and white and light.

Antelope Canyon - A rare beauty

No other slot canyon in the American Southwest has been featured in more photographs or has been visited more than Antelope Canyon, which is sometimes referred to as "The Corkscrew." Situated in the far north and central region of Arizona, the canyon is just a few miles from Page, Arizona and scenic Lake Powell.
The Antelope Canyons simply take your breath away for their unbelievable beauty. Since 1997, when the Navajo Tribe made the area a Navajo Tribal Park, Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon are accessible by permit only.
