Founding of Mission San Diego de Alcalá

Mission San Diego de Alcalá is a former religious outpost established by Spanish colonists on the west coast of North America in the present-day State of California.

On July 16, 1769 a cross was raised by Roman Catholics of the Franciscan Order, Father Serra held the first Holy Mass, and Mission San Diego de Alcalá was officially founded. The settlement was the first in the twenty-one mission Alta California chain, and is therefore known today as "California's First Church."

The mission remained at this site for only five years. The mission was moved six miles east, close to the San Diego River and the Kumeyaay village of Nipaguay. However, in 1776, Father Serra returned to Mission San Diego de Alcala to oversee the rebuilding of the mission.

Mission San Diego De Alcala Bell Tower

San Diego Mission Church (Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá) is a National Historic Landmark. The church’s most distinct architectural feature is a single, four-story bell tower containing five bells of three sizes. One of the bells in the tower is original to the church and dates to 1802. This bell can be distinguished from the others because it is the largest and sports a Spanish Crown at its peak.

Bells were vitally important to daily life at any mission. The bells were rung at mealtimes, to call the Mission residents to work and to religious services, during births and funerals, to signal the approach of a ship or returning missionary, and at other times; novices were instructed in the intricate rituals associated with ringing the mission bells.

A joyous, annual celebration each July honors the mission’s birthday. Visit during the Festival of the Bells for a chance to witness the only time all five bells ring in unison each year. The occasion includes several days of fiestas and events including traditional Spanish food, dance, and music.

Stained Glass Window Father Antonio Ubach

For forty-one years, the name of Father Antonio Dominic Ubach was a familiar one in San Diego. His work included ministry to Indians and to white settlers as far north as San Juan Capistrano, far down into Lower California, and to the interior of Southern California as well. The years have not dimmed the influence of this forceful man; when church history is recalled in Southern California, his name looms large and his deeds are retold.

One of Fr. Antonio Ubach's projects was the beginning of what is today the Immaculate Conception Church in Old Town. 5 July 10, 1868, when the cornerstone was laid, was a proud day for him. Opened for divine worship on July 22, 1917 the Immaculate Conception Church was was not completed and dedicated until 1919 due to the boom that set in for the New San Diego. The Solemn Dedication took place on July 16, 1919.

In 1925 the Immaculate Conception Church in Old Town San Diego was formally transferred to the Order of Saint Francis. The Church has been in continuous operation since that time.

Beautiful Baja Beaches

In a general sense, the Baja Peninsula divides in the middle into two weather zones. The northern half experiences weather similar to that of Southern California, while the southern half has weather patterns like those of Arizona.

The southern state of the peninsula, Baja California Sur, can be divided into three weather regions, the Pacific coastal region, the inland region and the Sea of Cortez region. This is of course a generalization, because like the northern state of Baja California, there are dozens of micro-climates within each region.

Overall Baja California and Baja California Sur experience pleasant weather all throughout the year. Tourists flock to the area in summer in order to take advantage of the miles of beautiful coastline and beaches. And the weather stays warm throughout the winter, making Baja a terrific winter destination, especially for travelers coming from colder parts of the world.
