Roosevelt Lake Arizona - The American Southwest

Theodore Roosevelt Lake was formed by the construction of a masonry dam on the Salt River in 1911, making it the oldest artificial reservoir in Arizona.

About 10 miles of the original river are now beneath the waters, and in the other direction one of its major tributaries, Tonto Creek, is flooded for about 8 miles although the lake level and hence the overall length is quite variable.

Roosevelt Lake is a major center for fishing, boating, camping and general vacationing, and despite being quite close to Phoenix, the shortest route is via the unpaved Apache Trail, so the number of visitors is rather less than for some other water-based recreational sites in the Tonto National Forest with easier access such as Lake Pleasant and Saguaro Lake.

A visitor can expect sweltering summer temperatures to regularly exceed 100 degrees. In common with other lakes in the Phoenix area, summer water temperatures of Theodore Roosevelt Lake can exceed 90 degrees F, but cooling afternoon thunderstorms are common. And winter temperatures may drop below freezing.

Saguaros - Symbol Of The Desert Southwest

The saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea) is one of the defining plants of the Sonoran Desert. This cactus can be found in southern Arizona and western Sonora, Mexico. A few stray plants can also be found in southeast California. Saguaros are the largest cactus species in the U.S. - they can grow more than 40 feet tall.

A typical saguaro can live between 100-200 years. The Saguaro Cactus can absorb a lot of water. Depending on how much water they amass, saguaro cacti can shrink or swell in girth by 20-25 percent over the course of a year. Because the majority of a saguaro cactus is made up of water, an adult plant may weigh 6 tons or more. Saguaro are very slow growing cacti. A 10 year old plant might only be 1.5 inches tall. The Saguaro Cactus has a smooth and waxy skin and is covered with two-inch spines. The stem of the cactus can be 18 to 24 inches in diameter.

Saguaros - which make for expensive lawn adornments - began to disappear from the landscape because have become black market commodities, with poachers raking in a few thousand dollars for their hauls. This has been one of the major traditional threats to saguaro cactus. Arizona has strict regulations about the harvesting, collection or destruction of this species.

Desert Plants Of The Superstitions

The Superstitions in Arizona are the largest of the mountain ranges surrounding Phoenix, visible from many miles away along the straight roads through the suburbs east of Mesa. They rise steeply above the flat desert to a high point of 5,024 feet. Early settlers named the hills on account of the many myths and stories told by the local Pima/Apache Indians about The Mountain Of Superstition, and tales such as the fabled Lost Dutchman gold mine.

The Superstition Mountains include a wide-range of plants and animals that are native to the Sonoran Desert life zone. Plants range from the giant Saguaro cactus to the stately Ponderosa pine. Mule deer, javelinas, mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes, a variety of birds, reptiles and amphibians live in this fragile desert eco-system. A network of 180 miles of hiking trails lead into and through the Superstition Wilderness.

It is truly a living desert.

Jacksonville Florida Main Street Bridge

Jacksonville, perfectly positioned along the Atlantic Ocean in northeast Florida, is a natural paradise for visitors looking for an affordable yet luxurious destination. Stretches of stunning beaches and waterways, a downtown in renaissance and experiences that engross the mind, body and inner adventurer lure visotors to "immerse themself" in Jacksonville, Florida. And Jacksonvilles outdoors explode with opportunities to experience world-class Adventure & Sports.

Surprisingly, for a non-tourism town, there are a number of cool things to do in Jacksonville. These mostly revolve around history and nature. Unlike coastal South Florida, there are still vast swaths of Northeast Florida that are pretty much the way it was when experienced by William Bartram, whose 18th century descriptions of the area inspired the imagery for Samuel Taylor Coleridges epic poem Kubla Khan. You can go back a ways, to Gilded Age mansions in Fernandina, further back to pre-Civil War plantations, or take a trip on the river to see the primeval Florida that so captivated early settlers.

The "River City by the Sea" boasts more than 20 miles of wide and uncrowded beaches, close to 40 miles of the tranquil Intracoastal Waterway canal, and the longest stretch of the beautiful St. Johns River. Riverwalk was a welcome additon to the Jacksonville waterfront when it was built years ago. It's a nice place to just spend some time walking and relaxing in a good atmosphere. The Riverwalk and Saint John's River are valuable and beautiful gems for Jacksonville and a great place to spend some time.

Main Street Bridge Jacksonville

Downtown Jacksonville's Main Street Bridge, formally named the John T. Alsop, Jr. Bridge, was the city's second road bridge to be built across the St. Johns River.

The massive Main Street Bridge has become a landmark in downtown Jacksonville and was heralded as a major accomplishment when built at the end of the 1930s to carry US 1 over the St. Johns River. Made of eleven steel stringer spans and three Warren through trusses, the 365-foot long continuous truss vertical lift span at the center is the longest in Florida. The span-drive system, which puts the drive machinery on the movable span, utilizes concrete counterweights enclosed within two large steel frame towers. Although builders emphasized functional considerations, the bridge produces an aesthetic effect through its strength, 200-foot high lift towers, and commanding reach across the Saint Johns River measuring 1,680 feet in length.

The Main Street Bridge is Jacksonville's most memorable. The bright blue lift bridge opened in 1941, and today it carries about 20,000 drivers a day across US 1 between Ocean Street on the north (west) side of the river and I-95 and US 90 on the south (east) side.

Ivanhoe Tobacco - The American Dream

Henry W. Meyer was born in Germany in 1850. He came alone to America in 1866, when he was 16, and very poor. When he landed, he got a job as a clerk in a grocery store at Grand Street and Bushwick Avenue in the Williamsburgh section of Brooklyn, New York City. It was the practice of the store to extend credit to their grocery customers. When the economy took a downturn in 1871-1872, the business became insolvent. Henry Meyer had saved his wages and had sufficient funds to buy the business.

He phased out the grocery store and started producing his own pipe and chewing tobacco. Eventually, he had six brands of pipe and chewing tobacco, namely, "Best," "Hub," "Pilot," "Harvest," "Galaxy" and "Ivanhoe". Ivanhoe was his best seller. His plant was known as the Bushwick Tobacco Works. He eventually had 20 horsedrawn wagons delivering his products (pipe-smoking tobacco, chewing tobacco, and snuff) to his customers who primarily were grocery stores and tobacco shops.

In 1886, Mr. Meyer moved his residence from Williamsburgh to Glendale, NY to the John Siney House, which he had purchased. It was the finest home in Glendale and was located at what is today the northwest corner of Cooper Avenue and 72nd Street. Henry Meyer became ill and he died on October 3, 1898, 11 days short of his 48th birthday, as a very rich man.

The negative health effects of tobacco were not known during Mr. Meyer's lifetime; in fact, most early European physicians had subscribed to the Native American belief that tobacco can be an effective medicine.

Old Country Store Fabrics

Do you remember the days when you went with your mother to the old fabric store where she would spend what seemed like hours looking at neat rows of bolt behind the counter to find 'just the right' fabrics for her sewing project; when the fabric was measured and nicked with the meter, the clerk wiggling the fabric back and forth to get the meter to the exact mark, then press the lever to get a little slit, and then your mother's fabric portion was ripped from the roll or bolt while you and your sibling spent your time sitting on bolts or playing hide and seek in the shop?

These were the times long before fabric stores were called "quilt shops" - mostly consisted of plain broad cloth in every colour, some prints, gingham in several colours, flannelette, tea towelling and denim. Sometimes I wish I had a time machine to travel back to those days ...if for nothing else, just the experience of purchasing fabric in such a store ...

The 'Good Old Days' were not always good, but the thought of Old Fabric Shops brings back some good memories.

St Augustine's Oldest Store

Old Saint Augustine Village in St. Augustine, Florida, is one of the most historic regions of the city.

St. Augustine's Oldest Store Museum, once an operating general store, contains over 100,000 items from the turn-of-the-century. This wide variety of goods came from the stock of the original store. Bikes, tools, guns, household goods, medicines and hardware are all on display. A model T truck, conestoga wagon and steam tractor are also among the unexpected treasures in the museum. The old store is as what you would imagine, the walmart of its day. Old washing machines, old bicycles, an old school milk shake machine and kitchen utensils. It takes you back and allows you to see how things have progressed to today.

A great deal of time, effort, and money have been put into St. Augustine's Oldest Store Museum. I can't think of anyone who would not be entertained and educated by it.

St Augustine By The Sea Shore Talking To A Child

Saint Augustine, a bishop and doctor of the early Christian Church, is an important figure in the history of Christianity. The story of the life of St. Augustine is different from almost every other saint story, because it is taken from his own words and not from what has been said about him. He wrote a wonderful book called 'The Confessions of Saint Augustine', and in it we find all that he thought and did from the time he was a little child.

Once when this great father of the Church was walking along by the seashore, troubled and perplexed because he could not understand many things about God, he came upon a little child playing there alone. The child had digged a hole in the sand and was carefully filling it with water which he brought from the sea in a spoon. The bishop stopped and watched it for a while and then he asked:
"What art thou doing, my child?"
"I mean to empty the sea into my hole," answered the child, busily going back and forth with his spoon.
"But that is impossible," said the bishop.
"Not more impossible than that thy human mind should understand the mind of God," said the child, gazing upwards at him with grave, sweet eyes.
And before the bishop could answer the child had vanished, and St. Augustine knew that God had sent him the boy as an answer to his troubled thoughts, and as a rebuke for his trying to understand the things that only God could know.

This story is depicted in the Stained Glass Window 'St. Augustine by the sea shore talking to a child' in the Cathedral Basilika of St. Augustine in St. Augustine, Florida.
