Morocco - Land of contrast

Morocco is an exotic gateway to Africa; its mountains, desert and coast are populated by Berbers and nomads, and its ancient medina lanes lead to souqs and riads.
Lyrical landscapes carpet this sublime slice of North Africa from Saharan dunes to the peaks of the High Atlas.
Moroccan people remain closely connected to the environment. The nomadic southern 'blue men' brave the desert's burning expanses in robes and turbans, with mobile phones in hand. Likewise, traditional life continues – with tweaks – in the techniques of Berber carpet makers, in date cooperatives, in medina spice trading, and in the lifestyles in industrial cities like Casablance, ports like Essaouira and mountain hamlets.
Often exotic, sometimes overwhelming and always unexpected, Morocco's ancient centres are bursting with Maghrebi mystique and madness: the perfect complement to the serene countryside. When you hit town and join the crowds, you follow a fine tradition of nomads and traders stretching back centuries. Unesco has bestowed World Heritage status on medinas including Fès, the world’s largest living medieval Islamic city, and the carnivalesque Djemaa el-Fna in Marrakesh.
Meeting the Moroccan people involves nothing more than sitting in a cafe and waiting for your mint tea to brew. The trick is to leave enough time to watch the world go by with the locals when there’s so much else to fit in.

Heaven's Chef

Christmas is celebrated all around the world with good cheer and great food.
Though American Christmas often features a roast and lots of eggnog, things are done differently in other cultures. Across the pond, lunch is the big meal of the day, or christmas dinner is served after midnight mass. They enjoy dishes like roast goose, potato salad, homemade tamales and trifle with brandy butter. Mhmhmh, yummy! And, according to the online newspaper "Japan Today": In Japan KFC has become so popular that people reserve their Christmas dinner buckets (decorated with a picture of Colonel Sanders sporting a Santa cap) up to a month in advance.
Christmas to one and all – may you have a happy and joyous holiday season.

Seven-branched Temple Menorah

The seven-branched menorah, a candelabrum used in the Temple, is one of the oldest symbols of the Jewish faith. It has been said that the menorah is a symbol of the nation of Israel and its mission to be "a light unto the nations." The sages of the Talmud emphasize that light is not a violent force; Israel is to accomplish its mission by setting an example, not by might, nor by power, but by spirit. It was the menorah, not the "Jewish star", that served as the primary Jewish symbol from antiquity until the post-Renaissance period.

After the establishment of the State of Israel, the official symbol of the State centered around the seven-branched menorah. The design corresponded with the one engraved on the Arch of Titus in Rome. This choice, in spite of the availability of a large number of other forms known from archeological finds, expressed the desire to symbolize the national revival as the antithesis of the destruction and exile of the past.

Hung with Love

Mouth blown glass Christmas ornaments are an old European tradition. The Victorians, especially, wanted mouth blown, hand painted glass ornaments with beautiful colors decorated with glitter.
Today they are still made in the traditional centuries old methods in designs of years past as well as new interpretations of classic forms and exclusive artist pieces, crafted by the best small cottage craftsmen. Eachone of these beautiful whimsicals is an individual work of art reflecting the style and personality of the artists who created it.

Christmas Holiday decor - Mouth blown and hand painted

Besides the tree itself, Germany's contributions to Christmas ornaments include blown glass balls and tinsel.

The Thuringia region (Thüringen) had been home to glassmaking as early as the 12th century. Christoph Müller and Hans Greiner set up Lauscha's first glassworks in 1597. Soon other Glashütten (glassworks) were established in this small German town. Lauscha's Glashütten eventually produced drinking glasses, flasks, glass bowls, glass beads (Glasperlen), and even glass eyes (1835). Nearby Jena would later become famous for its optical glass.

Lauscha became the hub of the glass ornament trade. Firms which had been making glass barometers, canes, ointment bottles, goblets, bulls-eye glass window panes, eyes for stuffed animals and brilliantly colored marbles discovered that they could diversify into making molded glass ornaments. Initially replicating fruits, nuts and other food items, they soon branched out and began to manufacture hearts, stars and other shapes that had been created out of cookies but now had the added dimension of a wide color palette enhanced by the luminosity of the glass itself. Soon the glass blowers of Lauscha were creating molds of children, saints, famous people, animals and other forms and discovered that there was no apparent end to the market for this new type of Christmas ornament.

Wild and Pretty - Garden of the Gods Colorado Springs

Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, Colorado is a spectacular visual playground dominated by ancient sedimentary rock layers that have been tipped up vertically, creating a magical scene of stone “hogbacks” towering over the surrounding semi-desert and pinyon pine forest ecosystems.
Herds of Mule Deer roam the park, and in the morning the place is abuzz with the musical sounds of birds. From the hilarious antics of the resident magpies and chipmunks to the soaring hawks and ravens, there’s always wildlife to be seen. And if you’re lucky, you’ll be there when the Bighorn Sheep are around!
It is so different to see wildlife being “wild” rather than in a zoo. Sharing their space, being in their company … if you take the time to go on the dirt trails you’ll find that even in this “city” park, you can find a deep connection to nature. The massive, towering stones of the park will fill you with humility and awe. The gentle delicateness of the ecosystem will fill you with reverence for the tenacity of life.

Hoping for Rain - Garden of the Gods Colorado

The red of the rocks in Colorado's 'Garden of the Gods' contrasts sharply with the surrounding greens of the foothills, and the skies above, especially when rain in moving in. The 1,300-acre giant rock garden, composed of spectacular red sandstone formations, was sculpted by rain and wind over millions of years.
Legend has it that pioneers who explored the remarkable sandstone formations in the area in 1859 wanted to establish a beer garden here. However, one Rufus Cable objected: "Beer Garden! Why this is a fit place for a Garden of the Gods!"
Fortunately for posterity, Charles Elliott Perkins (head of the Burlington Railroad) bought the area some 20 years later and kept it in its natural state. Upon Perkins's death in 1907, his heirs gave the remarkable area to Colorado Springs on the condition that it be preserved as a park and open to the public. The park was dedicated in 1909 and is now a Registered National Landmark.

Home of the Weather God - Garden Of The Gods - Colorado City

Garden of the Gods is a jagged, sometimes spooky rocky outcropping in the middle of the desert foothills below the Rocky Mountains in Colorado Springs, CO.
It's a valley of jutting rocks, weathered pinnacles and stark shapes carved by the earth and its forces. The sheer faces and abrupt jagged edges of the rocks look as if they would be the backbone of some ancient buried creature. Lighting alters perceptions. The rocky outline of a weeping Indian in the morning becomes the head of a lion in the afternoon.
Strolling on the trails makes for a relaxing morning or afternoon. The path winds among such formations as the 'Three Graces', thin pillars that represent grace, gentleness and beauty, and the 'Cathedral Spires', whose tall, slender shape suggests a church steeple. An hour or two on the trail rewards the visitor with remarkable vistas of rock and forest, and a sense of the enormous forces that built the American continent.

Garden of the Gods - Colorado Springs CO

To say that the Garden of the Gods near Colorado Springs in Colorado is a free park with red rocks doesn't do it justice. It is unbelievably gorgeous and breathtaking. Evidence of past ages: ancient seas, eroded remains of ancestral mountain ranges, alluvial fans, sandy beaches and great sand dune fields can be read in the rocks formations.
The gorgeous scenery and easy access belies challenging, slabby, brittle sandstone that will test the grapes of any experienced climber, but the classic routes and occassional spectators (and the superhero feeling they invoke), will keep you coming back for more. Montazuma's Tower, Credibility Gap, Diesel and Dust, and Alligator Soup are highly recommended among climbers. Finger Traverse and Chatters make those who are not experts on a 5.7 and 5.9 feel embarrassed. Finger Traverse is called "the scariest 5.7 you've ever climbed".
Turn on, to nature. Tune in, to what is around you. Drop out, of the rat race for a bit. The beautiful rust colored orange formations with the grandeur of the Rocky mountains in the backdrop makes for a heavenly morning walk or a gorgeous afternoon stroll. Incoming rain and lightning strikes only make the scenery more exquisite.

Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument

Snow capped volcanic mountains standing on the edge of the desert plains: That's Sunset Crater Volcano, near Flagstaff, Arizona, the youngest in a string of volcanoes (the San Francisco volcanic field) that is related to the nearby San Francisco Peaks.

I can only imagine the horror of the local native Americans a thousand years ago when the volcano blew it's top. The accompanying earthquake, earth trembling, darkness, thunder and lightning must have been terrifying. The aftermath is a huge crater, which Mother Nature has now covered with trees and bushes. The lava flow, now solidified, of course, goes on for miles; flatlands and mountains, all covered with the ash from the eruption. The black rock is incredibly scenic with large chunks in one area and fine cinders in others. To see into the crater, one will need full hiking gear and be prepared for a long walk away from marked and serviced paths.

I've been to many volcanic sites, but this one, black rock in the middle of a brown and green countryside where volcanism seems out of place, sticks out as being very special.

Zion National Park as a storm rolls in

Zion, with its many religious connotations and historical meanings, is perhaps the perfect word to describe the awesome and awe-inspiring Zion National Park.

The Park is breathtakingly beautiful. The plateaus, every shade of yellow, orange, pink and red rock imaginable, deep green trees scattered all over the hilltops, on the highest branch a gigantic California Condor who has made it his home. What a sight! Entering Zion is like walking or driving into God's own cathedral. There is no other way to describe how stunningly gorgeous this place is. It's nature at its best.

Zion rocks!

Welcome to Ceske Budejovice - Budweis Czech Republic

The beginnings of České Budějovice (German: Budweis) can be traced back seven and a half centuries. It was King Přemysl Otakar II that founded the city in 1265, and it is after him that the magnificent main square of the town is now named. However, in the town's history the square had been named after other individuals. In the 20th century alone these notables have included Emperor Franz-Josef of Austria, Jan Masaryk (popular and internationally respected Czechoslovak diplomat and politician) and Adolf Hitler, a testament to the turbulent history of the region. Chilling tales of ghosts and mysteries are hidden in Ceske Budejovice's ancient city walls. One of the legends is about a stone marked with a cross set into the square's pavement. It marks the site where the town gallows were in the past. As the story goes, any poor sot stepping on or crossing this 'Erratic Boulder' on his way home from the pub after 10 p.m. will be doomed to not find his way home and wander the city until the morning. Another legend is related to the stone gargoyles – a frog and a dragon - of the Virgin Mary Church on Piarist square. One version says that they are coming out of the wall, another one says that they are going into it. In both the cases, when they finish their movement the end of the world will come.
