Lonely as God and white as a winter moon

"Lonely as God, and white as a winter moon, Mount Shasta starts up sudden and solitary from the heart of the great black forests of Northern California."
~Joaquin Miller
'Life Amongst the Modocs'

Not just Native Americans but many people believe Mt. Shasta, a dormant volcano in northern California, has supernatural powers. Like many other striking skyscrapers of stone, the Shasta has some sort of spiritual energy that is hard to describe.
Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to the volcano's serenity and imposing presence. At 14,200 feet Mount Shasta, in Pacific Ring of Fire, is the 2nd largest volcano in the Cascades - so high that most of the time it creates its own weather.
Standing on Shasta's summit is one of the most rewarding experiences of life.

Family Portrait - Mount Shasta and Shastina Northern California

Permanently snowcapped Mt. Shasta, 14,162 feet (4,317 m), with all its grandeur towering high in the blue sky, stands alone and massive in size, isolating itself from the rugged peaks that surround it like a lonely pyramid in the desert. The stratum volcano is the second highest but perhaps the most magnificent of the volcanic peaks that form the Cascade Range, a line of isolated mountains that stretch from Lassen Peak northwards all the way to the Canadian border.
The old-growth incense cedar forests that once covered Mount Shasta disappeared for the most mundane of causes. The wood was so popular that as recently as the 1970s, half the wood pencils in the world were made from it.
However, Mount Shasta's seven glaciers, referred to by American Indians as the footsteps made by the creator when he descended to Earth, are the only historical glaciers in the continental U.S. known to be growing. With global warming causing the retreat of glaciers in the Sierra Nevada, the Rocky Mountains and elsewhere in the Cascades, Mt. Shasta is actually benefiting from changing weather patterns over the Pacific Ocean. But without global warming, another threat to Shasta's glaciers could come more quickly: a volcanic eruption that could melt them. Over the last 4,000 years, Shasta has erupted about every 250 to 300 years and did so most recently about 200 years ago.

Whitebark Pine at Crater Lake's rim - Oregon

Whitebark pine is the dominant timberline tree in subalpine habitats at Crater Lake and Lassen Volcanic National Parks. They live at high elevations under harsh, cold, windy conditions. The trunks and branches grow away from the wind creating a gnarled, sculpted tree. Dead limbs on the exposed, windward side of the tree protect and provide shelter for limbs on the other side.
Whitebark pine trees produce large seeds that Clark's Nutcrackers, large, black-and-white, crow-like birds, collect and cache. Not all cached seeds are used, and those uneaten often germinate singly or in clusters and survive. This accounts for some trees having multiple stems as adults.
Whitebark Pines and Clark's Nutcrackers are custodians of the ecosystem. The teamwork between tree and bird works so well that the whitebarks depend entirely on the nutcracker to reproduce.

Whitebark Pine Tree - Iconic Endangered Keystone Species

The Whitebark Pine is not just any tree! It is a 'pioneer species' and may be been the first species of tree to colonize the pumice covered slopes of Mt. Mazama after its cataclysmic eruption - today Crater Lake, Crater Lake National Park in Oregon.
Found in high elevation locations in the western US and Canada, whitebark pines may not be well known by many, but these spritely-looking trees are the king of their ecosystem. As an early colonizer to harsh, alpine habitat, whitebark pine provides shelter and windbreaks making the environment more hospitable for other plant life and animals. And the shade of whitebark pine tree slows the melting of snow and its roots stabilize the soil thereby moderating the runoff of snowmelt to reduce spring-time flooding and provide higher stream flows during summer months at lower elevations.
Crater Lake's iconic whitebark pine trees have been dying for decades and park ecologists estimate that they will be wiped out within 50 years. Blister rust, a fungus, has infected trees throughout the west coast region. Although the future looks bleak, scientists are trying to figure out methods for protecting the trees from this disease. Whitebark Pines may soon become the first major tree species to be listed under the Endangered Species Act.

Crater Lake - A Most Sacred Place among the Indians of Southern Oregon

On June 5, 1853, Crater Lake about 60 miles north of Klamath Falls, southern Oregon, was seen by white men for the first time. Three gold prospectors came upon it by accident while searching the legendary 'Lost Cabin' gold mine and one remarked in his journal: 'This is the bluest lake we've ever seen.' They named it Deep Blue Lake.
By then Crater Lake has long been a place of mystery, revered as sacred by the Klamath tribe of Native Americans, whose myths embody the catastrophic event they witnessed thousands of years ago when the volcanic Mount Mazama blew its top in spectacular fashion. The eruption, estimated to have been 42 times more powerful than Mt. St. Helens' 1980 blast, reduced Mazama's approximate 11,000 foot height by around half a mile, and the Crater Lake caldera was formed.
Today, Crater Lake in Crater Lake National Park remains a sacred site for power quests and other spiritual pursuits, both for members of the Klamath Tribe and those interested in Native American spirituality.
And for just about everyone, the spectacular lake with its crystalline beauty is a place of religious-like awe.

Crater Lake - Intense blue waters and spectacular views

One would have to search long and hard to find a blue as intense as the blue of Crater Lake in Crater Lake National Park. southern Oregon, United States. This phenomenon occurs in part because the freshwater lake is incredibly deep - almost 2,000 feet! Once a towering volcano that collapsed in an ancient eruption, Crater Lake is now the deepest lake in the U.S., fed only from rainfall, snow melt and the 44 feet of snow it receives on average every year. The caldera lake is filled with approximately 4.6 trillion gallons of water!
Crater Lake has mainly two seasons: a short but breathtaking flower-filled summer and eight months of harsh, unforgiving winter with ice-cold winds and prodigious snowfall. Total snowfall for a season can be as much as 50 feet, In spite of that, the lake itself almost never freezes over; it is so deep that the heat stored in summer rises slowly, or is stirred to the top by wind, and keeps the lake surface just above freezing.
With its sheer cliffs, deep, clear, sapphire-blue water and scenic islands, Crater Lake is a gem sparkling on the crown of the Cascades.
Whatever time of year you visit you'll find that Crater Lake National Park is a very special place; start your tour, and experience its magic for yourself.

Lone gnarled old Bristlecone Pines at Crater Lake - Oregon

Way up in the mountains on a high timberline
There's a twisted old tree called the bristlecone pine
The wind there is bitter; it cuts like a knife
It keeps that tree holding on for dear life
.....
When I'm laid to rest it would suit me just fine
To sleep at the feet of the bristlecone pine
~ Lyrics by Hugh Prestwood

Twisted old Bristlecone Pine above Crater Lake - Oregon

There it is, the majesty of the Bristlecone.
Look at the twists from several millennia of terrible winter winds, look at the diminutive size from several millennia of long and cold winters with a lack of oxygen.
But look how it stands proud and tall! What a tree to marvel at! Bristlecone pines are works of art - twisted by nature into fantastic shapes.
Old trees have fascinated people of all times, particularly bristlecone pine trees. They are a kind of universal symbol all over the world. Until today old, majestic trees like bristlecone pine trees are understood as a symbol of life, the eternal forces of nature, longevity and the capability to survive hardship.
And old trees and forests have also become a symbol for ecological balance. They remember us to take care about our planet in a responsible way.

Los Angeles Harbor Light - Angel's Gate - California

Los Angeles Harbor Light, also known as Angel's Gate Light, is a lighthouse in California, United States, at San Pedro Breakwater in Los Angeles Harbor, California.
The Los Angeles Harbor Lighthouse, originally known as San Pedro Harbor Light, has experienced several changes over the years. As the community and "light noise" on the hills behind the lighthouse grew, a green translucent cover was placed over the lens to change the characteristic from flashing white to flashing green. The old deep-throated two-tone fog horn, affectionately known to locals as "Moaning Maggie," was replaced by a higher-pitched single-tone horn. The new horn, nicknamed "Blatting Betty," was disliked by local mariners for years. The last major change for the lighthouse came in 1973, when the lighthouse was automated and the keepers departed.
Los Angeles Harbor Light - San Pedro Breakwater - Angels Gate, is on the registry for historic places.

Old Point Loma Lighthouse San Diego California

Point Loma crest, 422 feet above sea level, overlooking San Diego bay and the ocean seemed to be the right location for San Diego's Point Loma Lighthouse. In clear weather its light was visible at sea for 25 miles.
However, the light's lofty perch on the point, the highest in the nation, meant it was often shrouded in fog, rendering it useless to mariners. That's why the Light had only a short life. In 1891, after just thirty-six years of service, Point Loma's light was extinguished. A new lighthouse was built at the foot of the Point Loma cliffs at Whale Overlook, 100 yards south of the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. The new lighthouse is still in operation and not open for visitors. You can see it from the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, as well as drive by it on a road that winds down the slope of the cliff to the Point Loma Tide Pools and scenic view points.
Today Point Loma Light (old), location: Cabrillo National Monument, San Diego, California, is on the registry for historic places.

Old Point Loma Lighthouse - Cabrillo National Monument San Diego, CA

At dusk on November 15, 1855 the light keeper climbed the winding stairs and lit the Point Loma light for the first time, but what seemed to be a good location 422 feet above sea level, however, had a serious flaw. Fog and low clouds often obscured the light. On March 23, 1891 the light was extinguished and the keeper moved to a new lighthouse location closer to the water at the tip of Point Loma.
Today the Old Point Loma Light House on a scenic hill that sits atop San Diego Bay, in California, USA, still stands watch over San Diego, sentinel to a vanished past. Today Point Loma's well known landmark is the Cabrillo National Monument, named after Juan RodrĂguez Cabrillo of Spain, the first European explorer to see San Diego Bay. The Old Point Loma Lighthouse is part of the monument.

Point Fermin Light - an elegant Victorian Style Lighthouse in California

Point Fermin Lighthouse is a light station on Point Fermin in San Pedro, California, overlooking the entrance to Los Angeles Harbor. The ornate Victorian light station was built in 1874 with lumber from California redwoods and fir. The first lighthouse keepers, two sisters from Washington, resigned after eight years at Point Fermin, saying the life was too lonely, something that is hard to imagine given the area's present population.
Point Fermin Light remained active until December 1941, two days after the attack on Pearl Harbor. There was fear that the light on the hilltop would serve as a beacon for enemy planes and ships. Shortly after the light was deactivated the original fourth-order Fresnel lens was removed and had been missing for decades. Point Fermin light fell into disuse and disrepair.
In 2002, a $2.6 million dollar face-lift was initiated on Point Fermin Lighthouse. The building has now been restored to its original beauty and is open to the public as the Point Fermin Lighthouse Historic Site and Museum. And more than thirty years after it was removed, the original hand-crafted Fresnel lens was found and positively identified. In November 2006 it returned home and is now on display in the restored Point Fermin Lightstation.
Today, Point Fermin Lighthouse is one of San Pedro's most recognized landmarks. The vantage point atop the rugged bluffs affords a breathtaking view of the coast toward Santa Catalina Island as well as spectacular views of the coast and Channel Islands. You may even be able to spot playful dolphin and harbor seals from the cliffs.

New Santa Barbara Lighthouse - Santa Barbara, CA

On June 29, 1925, a severe earthquake jolted the Santa Barbara Lighthouse area. The lighthouse keeper, Albert Weeks, rudely awakened when he was thrown from his makeshift bed in a storage building. He ran to the lighthouse and ushered everyone outside. Moments later, the lighthouse tower and lantern came crashing down, followed by the walls of the small dwelling. The Fresnel lens was shattered, the structure was a total loss.
A temporary light, exhibited from a frame tower, replaced the old Santa Barbara light station and served until the permanent tower, seen today at the station on the mesa in Santa Barbara, was put into service in 1935.
The new Santa Barbara Light Station isn't exactly a picturescque lighthouse and doesn't attract a lot of attention. Historian Dr. Robert Browning writes, "The evolution of lighthouses has taken centuries and is profoundly influenced by the development of technology." And so it is with the Santa Barbara Lighthouse, which reached its current form in 1935 as an unmanned tower with an automatically operated light.

Piedras Blancas historic Light Station - Outstanding Natural Area Central California

The 18-acre Piedras Blancas Light Station sits on the coastal side of California scenic route 1 (California Coastal Highway) near Hearst Castle halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. It is an active lighthouse which began continuous operation in 1875 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Piedras Blancas, which means 'white rocks', played a role in local maritime history long before the building of the Piedras Blancas light station. Before the lighthouse was built at Point Piedras Blancas a lookout from the San Simeon Whaling Station was posted on the property during the southbound migration of the California gray whale. When a whale was sighted the lookout signaled the whalers, who then hunted their prey from 30 foot long whaling boats.
The first-order Fresnel lens in the 115-foot Piedras Blancas Lighthouse tower was first illuminated on February 15, 1875. In 1949 a fierce storm damaged the lantern room, and the lens. Lantern room, ornate railing, and the beautiful sculpted upper portion of the tower had to be removed - the height of the lighthouse was reduced to 74 feet. A rotating aero beacon was placed atop the shortened tower, and the lightstation returned to service.
In 1975 the tower was automated and the light station unmanned. The new VRB-25 beacon, installed in 2006, uses only a very small 12 volt halogen light, but the light can be seen up to 21 miles.

Point Sur Lighthouse on Central California's coast - Big Sur California

Point Sur Light Station or Point Sur Lighthouse just south of Monterey is a lighthouse located 361 feet above the surf on Point Sur, a large volcanic rock, 135 miles (217 km) south of San Francisco,in California, USA. The lighthouse was completed in 1889, and the light is still an active aid to navigation.
Point Sur has always been a navigational nightmare, but beginning around 1849, the time of the California Gold Rush, Point Sur began to have significant amounts of offshore traffic which caused an increased number of shipwrecks in that area. One shipwreck in particular, that of the Ventura, influenced funding for the construction of Point Sur Light. The captain of the Ventura was drunk, hitting a group of rocks just north of Point Sur, and many people died.
Today Point Sur is the only complete turn-of-the-century lightstation open to the public in California. The lighthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places and part of Point Sur Lightstation State Historic Park.

Point Pinos Lighthouse in a foggy night - Pacific Grove, Monterey, Central CA

In 1602, Spanish explorer Sebastian Vizcaino named the northern tip of the Monterey Peninsula "Punta de los Pinos," or Point of the Pines while exploring the central California coast. Back then the pine trees grew thick right to the waters edge. Out near the northernmost edge of the Monteray Peninsula is the Point Pinos Lighthouse. It was put into operation in February 1, 1855 and has been a beacon of light warning sailors of the potential rocky dangers off the coast and it marks the southern tip of the Monterey Bay.
One of the main attractions of Point Pinos is the rich, diverse marine life along the rocky shore. Tidepools are common in the area, and small sandy beaches also occur along the upper shore. Point Pinos is within the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and the Pacific Grove Marine Gardens Fish Refuge.
Sometimes the fog is so thick at Point Pinos Light, that the outlying rocks at Point Pinos can scarcely be perceived from the kelp, but when the coastal fog and wind all but disappears the water is among the warmest and the visibility is among the best on California's coast.

Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse California - The world's oldest surfing museum

The original Santa Cruz Light was completed in 1869 with the Fresnel lens located in a wooden cupola on the roof. New sea caves were forming under the cliffs and in March 1879 and again in 1881 the lightstation had to be moved inland. In May, 1948 the old light station was finally razed.
In 1965 eighteen-year-old Mark Abbott drowned while surfing at the northern shore of Monterey Bay near the point where the old Santa Cruz Lighthouse once was. Mark's parents used the insurance money to build a brick lighthouse near the site of the old lightstation. Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse is home to California's first surfing museum and is 'the' location each Christmas for 'Caroling Under the Stars,' a Santa Cruz tradition which attracts hundreds of locals and visitors alike.
Same as the old Santa Cruz Lighthouse the new Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse is threatened by erosion, which keeps undermining the point.
In Fall 2001, a second lighthouse was built in Santa Cruz, California. The Santa Cruz Breakwater (Walton), or Santa Cruz Harbor Light, was built on the West Jetty of Santa Cruz Harbor.
