Dresden Church of Our Lady and New Market

For over 200 years, the "Stone Bell," the dome of the Frauenkirche, towered over the inner city of Dresden. It gave the city a distinctive silhouette, until the bombings at the end of the Second World War destroyed the church.
In GDR times, the ruin and the rubble were treated as a memorial against war. Reconstruction began in 1994 and took 11 years.
About two thirds of the 180 million Euro used to reconstruct the baroque Church of Our Lady came from about 600,000 private donors from all around the world.
The consecration of the restored Dresden Frauenkirche in 2005, 60 years after its destruction, made it clear that wounds can heal and that injustice and violence can be overcome.
