Chicago The Beautiful

Ain't Chicago Beautiful? It sure is!

Left: Legacy at Millennium Park (249,6m / 819ft, 72 floors)
The building is oriented with the narrow side facing Grant Park, which minimizes the structures's apparent mass from the most common vantage point while providing lake and park views to all unit owners.

Second from left: Willoughby Tower (133,5m / 438ft, 38 floors)
The neo-gothic Willoughby Tower was the location of the Willoughby Building, a far less ambitious project of just eight stories.
The reason for the tall tower is to comply with a former city ordinance which stated that the portion of a building above a certain height could only occupy 25% of its footprint. Thus, the tall tower to maximize revenue and prestige while staying in line with setback laws. It helps distinguish this tower from the majority of buildings in the Michigan Avenue cliff which are all around 280 feet tall.
It offers excellent views of Lake Michigan and Millennium Park.

Middle: 6 N. Michigan Avenue (86 m / 282 feet, 22 floors)
The Montgomery Ward & Company Building, or Tower Building, was built as the headquarters for retailer Montgomery Ward, a pioneer in the mail-order business. The founder Aaron Montgomery Ward, whose office here faced over the lake, was instrumental in preserving the open lakefront and creating Grant Park.
It was the tallest building in Chicago from 1899 to 1922; surpassed by the Wrigley Building.

Second from right: Pittsfield Building (169,8m / 557ft, 38 floors)
A nice slender building that reaches 38 stories without fatiguing the observer. Moreover, its lateral flanks allow it to reach its full height within a small footprint and not look awkward. These setbacks were mandated by the city of Chicago in an effort to preserve what little sunlight was filtering down to street level through the growing forest of skyscrapers, and the thickening haze that became common in industrialized 20th century Chicago.

Right: Heritage at Millennium Park (192,3m / 631ft, 57 floors)

This was the tallest residential building in the Loop when it was completed.

The original facades of three small buildings on Wabash Avenue have been preserved and incorporated into this building. The facade has concave and convex curves, each topped with a row of vertical piers. This design reflects the semicircular peristyle nearby in Millennium Park.

Cloud Gate - The Bean - Millennium Park Chicago

The dusty pit that sat for decades amid the beaux-arts splendor of Grant Park, Chicago's front yard, has turned into Millennium Park, a joyful park that's sprinkled with smile - inducing sculpture and mind-bending "WOW-achitecture."

Anish Kapoor's bean-shaped cloud sculpture is Millennium Park's centerpiece. Even before it was given an official title, Chicagoans were quick to dub the reflective steel construction 'The Bean' after its peculiar shape and the name stuck. The official name however is Cloud Gate as it represents a gate to the city it reflects. The sculpture has the appearance of a giant drop of liquid mercury, and the mirrored surface offers an amazing reflection of the city skyline, even more breathtaking on a bright, clear day.

The artist says about his work:

"What I wanted to do in Millennium Park is make something that would engage the Chicago skyline ... so that one will see the clouds kind of floating in, with those very tall buildings reflected in the work. And then, since it is in the form of a gate, the participant, the viewer, will be able to enter into this very deep chamber that does, in a way, the same thing to one's reflection as the exterior of the piece is doing to the reflection of the city around."

~ Anish Kapoor

Chicago Millennium Monument and Fountain

With its 40-foot columns and polished stone, Wrigley Square and Millennium Monument, on the southeast corner of Michigan Avenue and Randolph Street, is where the past and present meet in the heart of Chicago's beautiful downtown. Made up of doric columns, The Colonnade is the link to the city's past. At the center of the monument is the Millennium Fountain.

This nearly full-sized replica of the semicircle of paired Greek Doric-style columns (called a Peristyle) that originally sat in this area of Grant Park from 1917 to 1953, is the most modest and traditional piece of architecture in Chicago's Millennium Park. With its graceful semi-circular row of columns that rise nearly 40 feet, the Millennium Monument ties the past to the present and supports the designation of Michigan Avenue as a landmark district.

Etched in stone on the base of the Millennium Monument are the names of the founders of Millennium Park. These individuals, corporations and foundations provided generous monetary contribution - the William Wrigley Junior Company Foundation donated $5,000,000.00 - for the creation and conservation of Millennium Park.

Chicago Willoughby Tower and 6 N Michigan Avenue

Chicago's Historic Michigan Boulevard District, the end of historic U.S. Route 66, includes numerous significant buildings on Michigan Avenue facing Grant Park. This district is one of the world's most well known one-sided streets rivalling Fifth Avenue in New York City and Edinburgh's Princes Street.

Tallest building: Willoughby Tower, 8 S. Michigan Avenue

Nothing beats an office with 360 degree city views.
This 438 feet / 134 meters, 38 stories neo-gothic office building is a great example of the sort of structure that made Chicago a living architectural museum. Finished in 1929, the intricate Willoughby Tower stands tall and proud over the Michigan Avenue cliff, presiding over the parade of unique architecture at its sides. Its lobby is trimmed in solid cast and green Italian bronze, with solid bronze doorways. They don't make 'em like these any more!

Second tallest building: 6 N. Michigan Avenue

Built in 1895, Six North Michigan is an intimate luxury condominium high-rise building with supreme views of Chicago's Millenium Park. From 1889 to 1922 this distinctive 21-story structure, was the tallest building in the world.

In spite of being more than one hundred years old, Six North Michigan retains some of its stately features. A tall central shaft with three columns of wide windows are flanked by two lesser wings of narrower windows. The arrangement fools the eye into thinking the north and south portions are set back from the main facade. The stylish building has an art-deco lobby with vaulted ceilings, walnut paneling and limestone floors.

The top of the structure used to support a ten-story tower, topped with a three-story pyramid, a temple, and a weather vane in the shape of the female form. Now that is the way the headquarters of a merchant prince should look! At the time it still sported its glorious tower, it was the headquarters of the Montgomery Ward company; a major player in the American Midwest until the late 20th century. But as Ward's fortunes would crumble, the tower had to be taken down for safety reasons. The observation deck, encased in glass, is still intact. It is now the grand living space of the Penthouse residence of 6 N. Michigan.

Chicago Loop 'L'

The Chicago Elevated Railway is known as "The L" which is short for "elevated.", However, it has to be noted that steam-powered cable cars circulated downtown Chicago and gave the Loop its name before the elevated tracks that circle the area and "L" trains came on the scene. The Elevated Railway system is a rapid transit system similar to the subway in New York or the Underground in London.

The first EL train ran in 1892 from Van Buren to 39th, and the car was actually a steam locomotive pulling four wooden coaches. Now it serves commuters at 144 stations, making it the second largest rapid transit network in the U.S after New York's subway. When it was originally constructed, the L rail system was completely elevated, hence the name. Today, however, the system is a mixture of elevated, overground and underground tracks.

As it has been for the last hundred years, Chicago rapid transit remains a system in flux, continuing to adapt to changing trends, needs, and technologies.

Marina City Chicago - Life in a Corn Cob

The 65-story, 900-unit Marina City twin towers at 300 N. State Street, Chicago, opened in 1962, embrace the Mad Men era with their retro cement exteriors and circular shapes.

When they started excavating in 1960, they found remnants in the ground from the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Not only has the building history beneath it, but Marina City also made a name for itself in Chicago and across the world with its corn-cob appearance and interiors which have almost no right angles. On each residential floor, a circular hallway surrounds the elevator core, surrounded by 16 pie-shaped wedges that make up the condos.

What is it like to live in the iconic Marina City in Chicago River North? Well, it's loud, but the highlight of living in the architectural icon is the units outdoor spaces provided by the huge balconies.

Chicago Theatre - French Baroque out of a movie

Seeing a concert at the Chicago Theatre is like spending the night with history. It is not hard to imagine what this place must have been like when it first opened.

Opening in 1921 as the first "movie palace" it set the stage for others across the country. From the lavish lobby with it's marble columns, grand staircase, and stained glass window (look for the original owner's coat of arms in the glass with the signature 35mm film coming out of the mouth's of lions) to the Steuben glass chandeliers, this place is magnificent! Stand in the theater and look at the individual boxes, the tier balconies, the ceiling murals and its opulence and beauty. It's like something you would see in the main dining room of the Titanic where the rich people on the ship eat. It is easy to imagine a young, beautiful lady in a big fluffy dress decending gracefully from the sweeping stairways to "come out" to society. This theater exudes class!

Like other theatres of this grandeur the Chicago Theater fell on hard times in the 1970's and for about 15 years lacked the stewardship owed to a building of this kind. In 1986 the theater was totally restored to what you see today, and it continues to be an icon of Chicago.

Goodman Theatre Chicago Illinois

Internationally recognized for the quality of productions, the depth and diversity of artistic leadership, and the excellence of its many community and educational programs Goodman Theatre, Chicago's oldest and largest not-for-profit theater, has been a part of life in Chicago since 1925. For over 80 years the Goodman is committed to producing both classic and contemporary works, giving full voice to a wide range of artists and visions. The Goodman is not ornate like the Oriental or the Auditorium, and it doesn't have the opulence of the traditional venues, but its modernity makes it unique and ideal. It has two stages: The Albert theater is the big one. The Owen is smaller and offers more undeveloped or experimental plays. Nearly every seat is a good seat. It is a small cozy theater so you always feel close to the stage. This intimate room features spectacular acoustics. Seeing and hearing is not a problem at all.

Goodman Theatre Center Chicago

The Goodman Theatre, recipient of a Special Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre, is a leader in the American theater and internationally renowned for its artists, productions and educational programs. The theater was established in July 1922, by a gift of $250,000 from William and Erna Goodman to the Art Institute of Chicago for the purpose of building a theater to memorialize their son, Kenneth Sawyer Goodman. Before his death at the age of 35 in the influenza epidemic of 1918, Kenneth Sawyer Goodman had written, published and produced a number of plays in non-commercial productions in Chicago, and had expressed his vision of an ideal theater, one that would combine professional training with the highest possible performance standards. The new theater, encompassing a drama school and a professional acting company, opened its doors on October 20, 1925. In the mid-1980s, concerned about the adequacy of its aging theater behind the Art Institute, the Goodman began to explore the possibility of a new facility. In the early 90's, the idea of the North Loop Theatre District was born, and the new Goodman Theatre at the corner of Randolph and N. Dearborn opened in December, 2000. After 75 years of ups, downs, highs, and lows, the Goodman had entered the 21st century, and began writing a new chapter in its formidable history.

Chicago - Chase Tower

Built from 1964 to 1969, the 850 feet / 259 meter, 60 floors high, JPMorgan Chase Tower stands watch as the most prominent architectural feature of Chicago's central Loop.

The building's most noticeable physical aspects are the graceful slopes of its Northern and Southern flanks. They induce a bit of forced perspective and make the tower seem taller than it is, but were designed to serve a purely utilitarian function. At the time this building was erected, the bank that commissioned it needed a large contiguous floorplate at ground level to handle daily transactions while at the same time offering high-placed executives equally high offices in the tower portion of the building. The solution was a downward slope that also adds geometric interest to what would otherwise be a fairly bland rectangle.

An unusual sensation can be experienced by placing a foot on one of the curving piers, then looking up to the top: this gives the illusion that it is possible to run up the skyscraper.

But Chase Tower is not only noted for its concave sides but also for its plaza, containing a large mosaic donated by Marc Chagall called the 'Four Seasons'.

LaSalle Street Chicago - Wall Street of the Midwest

Art Deco is an architectural style from the 1920's and early 30's. It attempted to express the modern world by the use of cubic forms, geometric ornament, and sleek surface materials.

While New York is the capital of the Art Deco skyscraper movement, Chicago has several extraordinary examples to offer.

One of the best is at the bottom end of the La Salle Street Corridor: The Chicago Board of Trade Building (CBOT) (141 W. Jackson Blvd.), outside and in, is the summit of Art Deco elegance, complete with a pyramidal roof crowned by an aluminum statue of Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture.

Being the world's oldest futures and options exchange as well as a national landmark, the Board of Trade in Chicago is a must-see for any history buff, or anyone with interests in the history of the stock market.

Chicago Harbor Lighthouse

Lights have marked the entrance to Chicago Harbor and the Chicago River as early as 1832. The Chicago Harbor Lighthouse, also called the Chicago Breakwater Light, was first lit in 1893 and originally sat at the mouth of the Chicago River. The lighthouse now sits on the breakwater in the Harbor of Lake Michigan. The lighthouse still is actively used by the Coast Guard to direct boat traffic in Lake Michigan. A lighthouse keeper lived in the living quarters until 1979, when the light was upgraded and automated. The lighthouse was fully restored in 1997, but remains closed to the public.

Chicago - Skyscrapers are looking down on us

Far left: 1 South Wacker Drive

Designed by internationally renowned architect Helmut Jahn, the glossy skyscraper at 1 South Wacker is an architectural icon. Built in 1982, it predates the State of Illinois Center. Its reflective glass exteriors are boxes of black and blue-gray tints.
As you approach the building, the granite pavers, sleek polished granite walls and stainless steel accents throughout the plaza complement the building's original design while adding a soft, elegant signature to the building's curb appeal.

Center left: Hyatt Center - Hyatt hotel corporation headquarters offices
The shiny building is modern and unique with a strong attention to detail. Its tower has a cross-section like a football with its points chamfered. Despite the signature curviness of the structure the building is easy to navigate but your sense of balance can be thrown off when walking up and down the elliptical hallways.
The lobby is like a botanical garden, and its curvy outdoor planters are actually designed to withstand the impact of vehicles driven by terrorists.

Right: 10 and 30 South Wacker Drive
Architectural style: modernism,
Structural material: concrete,
Facade material: granite,
Facade system: curtain wall
Known as "The Gateway to the Loop", 10 and 30 South Wacker, each 520 ft, 40 floors, are twin towers flanking the 10 storey structure that houses the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. As the first phase of the two towers, 30 South Wacker was built with the adjoining Chicago Mercantile Exchange trading floor, and provides the entrance to this facility. Sawtooth corners create 16 corner offices per floor

Chicago - City of Big Shoulders

Chicago, IL

Left - The ABN AMRO Plaza Technology Center: It's all about the angles with this one. ABN AMRO Plaza has some of the most daring angles in the city. Acute angles and points, not merely squares define the space of this building. And as if to reinforce the message, the building is capped by a floating framework that juts out at its most precipitous points. An apex upon this trapezoid-shaped building's apexes. Such a building could have easily resulted in something resembling a science fiction cartoon. But the execution here was very well done, transforming what could have been another vaguely-1990's glass block into a building that defines its own style, rather than follows the lead of others.

Right - The Citigroup Center (formerly: Citicorp Center / Northwestern Atrium): A massive hulk of a building that manages to not feel imposing in spite of its girth. The Citigroup Center combines reflective glass with setbacks to maximize office space while remaining pedestrian-friendly.
In essence, this building is actually a group of three traditional Art Deco towers attached shoulder-to-shoulder and clad in blue glass. The massing of a shaft on top of a podium with additional setbacks at the top is a method used for a hundred years to make sure that light reaches street level. By covering this building in reflective blue glass it maximizes the amount of light it shares and also helps blend into the sky to reduce its visual footprint.
