The humid, moist woods are a perfect climate for fungi to grow. Fungi are the most important decomposers in many ecosystems, and Quinault's temperate rainforest is no exception. Bracket fungi are found on standing trees that are dead or in the process of dying. Small strands (or mycelia) work their way through the rotting wood, digesting the tree's cellulose and other components. At some point the fungus grows large enough that some of the strands make their way to the outside of the tree and form the fruiting bodies that we see here. From this point high on the tree the fungus releases spores to hopefully find a tree of their own to recycle.
