Spruce Burls Olympic National Park, WA

Olympic National Park on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State is one of the world's most complex ecosystems. More than 3,000 plant-species live in its forests. One of its many extravaganzas lives in the woods above Beach One near Kaloch at the southern end of its 73 miles coastline.
While the Trail on Beach One also leads to a sandy beach, its main interest lies the burls - large bulbous growths - that appear on the Sitka spruce trees between the highway and the beach. The cause of these large knobby growths is unknown, but it is thought that they might be from something carried in the ocean spray, or perhaps a virus.
The woods along Beach 1 feature impressive examples of this eerie natural growth phenomenon: Spruce burls of enormous size.
