Heceta Head Lighthouse - Oregon's Scenic Pacific Coast Viewpoint

Oregon's scenic Heceta Head lighthouse and light station, still allegedly haunted by a young woman named Rue, is a favorite of lighthouse aficionados. The surrounding, near-vertical rock cliffs - which evoke the plunging coastlines of Big Sur, California - made construction of Hecata Head light particularly difficult. In such a stunning setting, the picturesque light tower was destined to become a favorite of lighthouse aficionados, not to mention maritime painters and landscape photographers.
Visitors to Heceta Light in Oregon are treated to wonderful views of the rugged coastline. Even by the off-the-scale beauty standards of northern Oregon, this is a lighthouse that has to be seen to be believed, with the cool green pine forests, black rock cliffs, and chromium blue ocean below.
Sea lions and whales can be viewed from the beach and the cliff-top. Looking down, just over the railing near the lighthouse, you can spot common murres, which lay their eggs on the bare rocks. It's common to see brown pelicans and bald eagles fly by. Migrating gray whales travel to and from Alaska and Baja California right past the lighthouse. May is the busiest time of year for whale watching. Often you'll see migrating mothers with their calves as they travel close to shore.
