Weathered roots - Sitka Spruce tree Hoh Rain Forest Olympic National Park, WA

The Sitka spruce grows up to 225 feet in height and to eight feet in diameter, and it can live to be 700 years old. Once, the raw materials from these giant trees provided the basis for nearly everything that Native American Indians used. They devised a technique for weaving baskets and hats from materials harvested from Sitka spruce roots and acheived fame for these finely twined baskets decorated with dyed grass applied in a technique termed "false embroidery." And Northwest Coast men are renowned for their tradition of wood carving and painting. They carved everything in wood from the roots of the Sitka spruce tree, from monumental totem poles and canoes, to delicate face masks.
