Trees on the Trails - Olympic National Park, WA

Most big trees in Olympic National Park and Forest on the Olympic Peninsula in the northwest corner of Washington State (the Evergreen State) stand in quiet solitude, sunlight glinting on their trunks, the scent of pines pervading the air - no other emphasis in the forest. Hikers and wildlife alone are affected by their presence. However, the centuries old big red cedar tree in this photograph has endured decades of tourists scratching its reddish bark, trampling its roots, and staring at its ponderous bulk.
