Klamath River Mouth - A Bliss Place

The Klamath River is the largest of the North Coast rivers of California stretching over 200 miles from its mouth to the Oregon border. Its mouth is located 60 miles north of Eureka and 20 miles south of Crescent City off 101.

There is a large sandspit across the mouth of the river where it enters the Pacific Ocean. This sandspit shifts from time to time to accommodate the repositioning of the river's mouth. This can be a very dangerous place - especially near the mouth itself - where strong surf and high tides can completely wash across the spit and sweep the unsuspecting into the wild and scenic Klamath River and out to sea. A number of ships foundered on this spit, and it is still hazardous to navigate this portion of the river.

The mouth of the Klamath is a fisherman's paradise. The fish of the Klamath are King and Silver salmon, Steelhead, and resident trout. The Kings start running in July with the best action near the mouth coming in August and running through September. Summer/Fall steelhead start running from the late summer through October. The winter run starts in November and goes through February. There are no crowds here, just whites, Elephant seals, and the occasional Crey Whale, seal lions and big sharks.

The variety of fishing, plus the abundance of wildlife on top of the amazing scenery are the reasons why some people call this a "bliss place." The local name for this area is Requa. That pretty much sums it up. There is a sense of peace, serenity and spiritual vibrance at the Klamath River mouth that is unlike anywhere else.
