Lassen Volcanic Wilderness, California

Lassen Volcanic National Park is 200 miles from San Francisco, in a sparsely-populated, hilly area north of the Sierra Nevada mountains, officially part of the Cascade Range that extends north all the way to British Columbia. It is one of the most unusual places in California, yet is relatively little visited, partly because snow covers most of Lassen Volcanic National Park from mid October to mid June, it is a long way from most other famous natural attractions in the state, and because in some areas Lassen Volcanic National Park looks like a blend of the moon and Yellowstone sulfur springs.
It’s time to see the park through fresh eyes! Since that last explosions, starting 1914 and lasting until 1921, Lassen has recovered a lot. Forests drape the hills and mountainsides. The air is clean and fresh and snaps with clarity. Lakes, ponds, streams and glacier blue water pockets in ice-filled lakes are aplenty.
Sulphur Works is located near the very center of the ancient Mt. Tehama. It is actually a remnant of the central vent of the mountain. Sulphur Works is a first treat to Lassen Volcanic National Park's visotors, and an eye-opener to this unique and eclectic park.
