The beginnings of České Budějovice (German: Budweis) can be traced back seven and a half centuries. It was King Přemysl Otakar II that founded the city in 1265, and it is after him that the magnificent main square of the town is now named. However, in the town's history the square had been named after other individuals. In the 20th century alone these notables have included Emperor Franz-Josef of Austria, Jan Masaryk (popular and internationally respected Czechoslovak diplomat and politician) and Adolf Hitler, a testament to the turbulent history of the region.
Chilling tales of ghosts and mysteries are hidden in Ceske Budejovice's ancient city walls. One of the legends is about a stone marked with a cross set into the square's pavement. It marks the site where the town gallows were in the past. As the story goes, any poor sot stepping on or crossing this 'Erratic Boulder' on his way home from the pub after 10 p.m. will be doomed to not find his way home and wander the city until the morning.
Another legend is related to the stone gargoyles – a frog and a dragon - of the Virgin Mary Church on Piarist square. One version says that they are coming out of the wall, another one says that they are going into it. In both the cases, when they finish their movement the end of the world will come.
