Guan Yin Bodhisattva - Goddess of Compassion

Standing proud in the maze of high rises of Shanghai, China, the old Jing'an Temple draws people from all walks of life to a silent moment of prayer to Guanyin, the female bodhisattva. In East Asian Buddhism Guanyin is believed to be a compassionate being who watches for and responds to the people in the world who cry out for help.
Historically, the worship of Guanyin was represented as the male Indian Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, but in China Guanyin metamorphosed to an all female form because here the traits of "compassion" and "kindness" are associated with the Chinese concept of Yin, the feminine aspect of creation.
In Jing an si, Shanghai, Bodhisattva Guanyin is depicted in the form of a very detailed, large camphor-wood statue. She is holding a water pitcher. This pitcher is believed to be filled with pure water, the divine nectar of life, compassion and wisdom.
