Devils Postpile, known locally as the Devils Woodpile, is located in the Sierras west of the town of Mammoth, eastern California. Although Mammoth is considered to be in the Eastern Sierra, Devils Postpile is considered to be on the western side of the Sierra.
Devils Postpile is a dark cliff of columnar basalt, created by a lava flow sometime between less than 100,000 years ago to 700,000 years ago. The Postpile's columns average 2 feet (0.61 m) in diameter, the largest being 3.5 feet (1.1 m), and many are up to 60 feet (18 m) long.
They look like tall posts stacked together in a pile, hence the feature's name.
