Point Pinos Lighthouse in a foggy night - Pacific Grove, Monterey, Central CA

In 1602, Spanish explorer Sebastian Vizcaino named the northern tip of the Monterey Peninsula "Punta de los Pinos," or Point of the Pines while exploring the central California coast. Back then the pine trees grew thick right to the waters edge. Out near the northernmost edge of the Monteray Peninsula is the Point Pinos Lighthouse. It was put into operation in February 1, 1855 and has been a beacon of light warning sailors of the potential rocky dangers off the coast and it marks the southern tip of the Monterey Bay.
One of the main attractions of Point Pinos is the rich, diverse marine life along the rocky shore. Tidepools are common in the area, and small sandy beaches also occur along the upper shore. Point Pinos is within the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and the Pacific Grove Marine Gardens Fish Refuge.
Sometimes the fog is so thick at Point Pinos Light, that the outlying rocks at Point Pinos can scarcely be perceived from the kelp, but when the coastal fog and wind all but disappears the water is among the warmest and the visibility is among the best on California's coast.
