Antelope Canyon - Arizona's sandstone cathedral

Hidden from view beneath the desert landscape on the Navajo Nation Reservation in Northern Arizona lies Antelope Canyon, a sandstone cathedral of natural beauty, one of the most tranquil and breathtaking places nature has to offer.
The Navajo peoples were said to have used the privacy and energy of this canyon as a haven of renewing spiritual energy. It is still considered a spiritual location which demands respect in honor of the beauty of this amazing hidden creation.

It started with a kiss

At times Antelope Canyon's rock forms seem to bear a resemblance to human or animal bodies in their shape and appearance, making the canyon all the more like a living, breathing entity. Faces seem to come out of the wall, looking at each other lovingly.
The canyon was formed by the erosion of Navajo sandstone, chiefly due to flash floods that still occur here, making this very much artwork still in progress. Perhaps these two faces will one day reunite in a kiss.

Mysterious magnificent Antelope Canyon

The mysterious, magnificent colors of Antelope Canyon make it the most photographed slot canyon in the American Southwest. This masterpiece of color is located near Page, Arizona, and the Lake Powell area on Navajo land. It is a place of splendid serenity, the sort of spot where people find themselves talking in hushed whispers without quite knowing why.
One of the world's true natural wonders, this slot canyon has been formed over thousands of years by the gradual wear of water rushing through rock.

Antelope Canyon - Magnificent play of light and color

To older Navajos, entering a place like Antelope Canyon was like entering a cathedral. They would pause before going in, to be in the right frame of mind and prepare for protection and respect. This would also allow them to leave with an uplifted feeling of what Mother Nature has to offer, and to be in harmony with something greater than themselves. It was, and is, a spiritual experience.

Valley of Fire Nevada - A Special Place

Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada features red sandstone rock formations which appear to be on fire when reflecting the sun's rays,
Some of the red rocks resemble animals, some giant slabs of swiss cheese, some are cute and some are eerie. Quite a number of these "interesting creatures" are inhabiting the Valley of Fire.

Valley of Fire - The landscape burns

Ever wonder what Mars looks and feels like? Put yourself in another world at Valley of Fire, Nevada's first state park.
The oddly shaped sandstone palisades, outcrops and canyons are painted in hues ranging from flaming orange to deep crimson, depending on the time of day.
If anyone thinks the desert is a bleak, boring landscape devoid of any color or character, the Valley of Fire proves them wrong in a heartbeat.

Valley of Fire - Adventure in Color and Beauty

Coming from Vegas to Valley of Fire State Park one goes from one extreme to another and the whole experience is pretty surreal.
Las Vegas is shrill and loud, the Valley of Fire is quiet and peaceful; both are bizarre and surreal; both shine in bright neon colors.
In addition to its neon red rock formations, Valley of Fire is famous for its distinct stone shapes. Visitors will see rocks in the shape of a piano, an elephant and even a beehive. Some rocks, however, take on more obscure shapes.
Let your imaginations run wild - nothing is really wrong here.

Natural Arch - Valley of Fire - Nevada

There are numerous incredible rock formations in the Valley of Fire Sational Park, Nevada.
Unable to withstand the blasting of strong winds and the slow dissolving away by rains of the cementing materials holding its sand grains together, the rock weakens allowing an arch to form. Eventually it will grow too large for its support, and nature's forces will complete their work of destruction.

Arch Rock - Amazing show of nature

Arch Rock is one of more than 300 natural rock arches located throughout Nevada's largest State Park, the Valley of Fire.
It took Mother Nature thousands of years to create this Natural Arch. It will most likely take her only seconds to knock it down one day.

Buddhas Delight - Representations of Buddhism

No representations of the Buddha were made for about four or five centuries of Buddhism; the first Buddha sculptures were produced in about the 1st or 2nd century AD.
There is no standard way of representing the Buddha, but a Buddha statue is not meant to merely depict the creator of Buddhism. Each sculpture is wrought with religious lessons, which are represented in nearly every aspect of the figure. It is said that each physical feature of the Buddha is symbolic of Buddhist teachings.
Buddhists do not 'worship' Buddha statues any more than Christians worship the cross or Muslims the Kabba, which they face when they pray. Like the cross etc. the Buddha statue is a symbol, helpful in creating devotion, uplifting the mind and focusing attention. Buddha statues inspire us to develop our inner qualities to achieve happiness, good fortune, and satisfaction in our lives.

Jade Buddha Jing'an Temple Shanghai

It is said that Jing An Si (Jing An Temple) in downtown Shanghai, China was built in the 10th year of Chiwu, the Eastern Wu Dynasty in the three kingdoms (247 bc) and relocated to its present location in the 9th year of South Song emperor's Jiading era (1216 bc). The current temple was rebuilt in the Qing dynasty and was renovated in 1953,1984 and 2000.
Opposite to the Guanyin Hall is the Jade Buddha Hall, with a Sakyamuni Statue enshrined and worshiped inside. The whole jade statue was transferred from Burma. With a height of 3.87 meter, a width of 2.6 meter and a weight of 11,000 kilograms the jade buddha statue was so big that a wall had to be torn down to hold it.
The statue is in the style of the traditional Buddha of Han Nationality: The shape of the Buddha's face is like a full moon and its impression is tender and serene.
Jing'an Temple's Jade Buddah statue is bigger than the two in Shanghai's Jade Buddha Temple and it is the largest sitting jade Buddha statue in the country.

Jing'an Silver Buddha - Shanghai China

The Silver Buddha in Jing'an Temple Shanghai, China is a statue of the Sakyamuni Buddha sitting on a lotus base in meditation.
The sculpture was made from 15 tons of silver and is 8.8 meter high.
Jing'an's Silver Buddha is not the largest Buddha in China, but certainly one (if not the) most impressive.

Guardian Warrior - It can't hurt to have your own

Warrior guardians can be found watching over temples and graves in China for millennia. They represented many different beings, from symbols of armies long-dead to depictions of gods who granted the house their protection.
Intimidating in their precence Jing'an's Temple guardian warriors pulsate with masculine engergyy.
Placed strategically at the entrance to Buddhist shrines, fierce warriors, such as this one, protect the temple and the faithful.

Guan Yin Bodhisattva - Goddess of Compassion

Standing proud in the maze of high rises of Shanghai, China, the old Jing'an Temple draws people from all walks of life to a silent moment of prayer to Guanyin, the female bodhisattva. In East Asian Buddhism Guanyin is believed to be a compassionate being who watches for and responds to the people in the world who cry out for help.
Historically, the worship of Guanyin was represented as the male Indian Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, but in China Guanyin metamorphosed to an all female form because here the traits of "compassion" and "kindness" are associated with the Chinese concept of Yin, the feminine aspect of creation.
In Jing an si, Shanghai, Bodhisattva Guanyin is depicted in the form of a very detailed, large camphor-wood statue. She is holding a water pitcher. This pitcher is believed to be filled with pure water, the divine nectar of life, compassion and wisdom.

Rows of red Chinese paper lanterns - Shanghai China

The Chinese lantern originated as an improvement over the more simple, more natura, and surely, more widespread, source of lighting: the open flame - e.g. torches carried on the eve of Chinese New Year by Buddhist monks in hope of spotting the ethereal figures of the Buddha and his bodhisattvas and to see their deceased loved ones passing over on their journey to the heavens.
In fact, Chinese lanterns were the first ever portable "lighting structure" produced by man. It's no wonder that the Chinese take such great pride in this historic invention.
Though there is no longer a practical rationale for Chinese lanterns (modern lighting is far superior to the old-fashioned oil lamp), the Chinese lantern is still made, used and enjoyed by the people in China but also by people all around the world for their colorful, festive look.
