The Chinese lantern originated as an improvement over the more simple, more natura, and surely, more widespread, source of lighting: the open flame - e.g. torches carried on the eve of Chinese New Year by Buddhist monks in hope of spotting the ethereal figures of the Buddha and his bodhisattvas and to see their deceased loved ones passing over on their journey to the heavens.
In fact, Chinese lanterns were the first ever portable "lighting structure" produced by man. It's no wonder that the Chinese take such great pride in this historic invention.
Though there is no longer a practical rationale for Chinese lanterns (modern lighting is far superior to the old-fashioned oil lamp), the Chinese lantern is still made, used and enjoyed by the people in China but also by people all around the world for their colorful, festive look.
