San Antonio Church Mission San José

Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo, the largest of the Texas missions, was founded on February 23, 1720 and moved to its current location between 1721 and 1724 along the San Antonio River.

When Father Morfi visited Mission San José in 1777, the compound consisted of the indigenous quarters along the outside, the granary along the north wall, soldiers quarters, a two-story convento, workshops, and a stone church with a carved stone sacristy window (Rose Window) and carved stone façade. Morfi described Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo as the "Queen of the Missions". The carved stone façade of the church has been described to rival those of Europe with intricate carving and use of negative space. The soft native limestone from further upstream along the San Antonio River provided a unique carving opportunity - stone soft enough to carve with wood-carving tools.

While Mission San Jose now sits just south of downtown San Antonio, when one stands in the restored Mission, the "Queen of the Missions" continues to provide the visitor with the feel of the mission compound.

Emily Morgan Hotel San Antonio, TX

The iconic Emily Morgan Hotel - a DoubleTree by Hilton in San Antonio, TX presents the perfect blend of historical Texan charm and contemporary urban sophistication!

Dating back to the 1920s, The Emily Morgan Hotel features timeless architecture and intricate Gothic-style embellishments that tell an interesting story of the building's famous history. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Alamo Plaza, The Emily Morgan Hotel is housed in what was formerly the Medical Arts Building. The building's distinctive form and ornamentation are influenced by the Gothic revival that was the fashion for skyscrapers nationwide in the 1920s. In 1976, the Medical Arts Building was converted into a modern office building. In 1984, the building was adapted for use as a hotel and The Emily Morgan Hotel was founded.

You can tell the hotel was updated, everything is fresh and clean, but it has managed to keep some of it's historic features and Texas flare, both of which make it unique. Ask for a "haunted floor" if you dare!

Mission San Jose - San Antonio, TX

During the 18th century, the Spanish established a chain of missions along the San Antonio River. These missions became the foundation for the city of San Antonio, Texas.

The church at Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo, known as the "Queen of the Missions," was constructed between 1768 and 1782. It is the second church of the Mission, originally founded in 1720. Constructed of limestone, the church has two domes, a tower, an elaborate Baroque facade and an intricately carved Rose window. In addition to the magnificent church, the mission compound consists of several restored and reconstructed buildings, including quarters for the native inhabitants, a mill and granary.

The San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, administered by the National Park Service, incorporates four 18th-century missions and their acequias, or irrigation systems. The Mission Trail extends eight miles and connects these historic places.

San Antonio Emily Morgan Hotel

The iconic Emily Morgan Hotel, 705 E Houston St, San Antonio, TX, is an architectural masterpiece lighting up the San Antonio skyline and overlooking the historic battlegrounds of the Alamo!

Emily Morgan (or Emily West) is the girl considered the "Yellow Rose of Texas." According to legend, Sam Houston sent her into Santa Anna's camp to distract him so the Mexican Army could be defeated at San Jacinto, hence providing for Texas independence. It is widely held that Emily Morgan was the inspiration for the much-loved song, "The Yellow Rose of Texas," written shortly after the war.

Often considered one of the best Gothic revival buildings in the United States, the Emily Morgan Hotel was built in 1926 and was original known as the Medical Arts Building. It is 13 stories high, crowned with a fine tower, adorned with numerous gargoyles, and located next to the Alamo. The Official Hotel of the Alamo offers a bit of vintage charm mixed with modern decor and luxurious amenities.

Tree Canopy In San Antonio, TX

A lush tree canopy gives shade, filters out pollutants, cools sidewalks and buildings and is beautiful to look at. Cities that have a large amount of tree canopy coverage are more healthy and attractive.

What do trees tell us about the urban environment? Places that have more trees have better air and less water pollution. Trees cool the city by absorbing sunlight and releasing water through evapotranspiration. They serve as wind barriers, provide oxygen, conserve energy, save water, help prevent water pollution, reduce violence, provide habitat for urban wildlife and increase property values.

The lacy appearence of this Live Oak tree canopy adds a certain elegance to this San Antonio courtyard.

Contrabando Film Set

There is a 50 mile scenic drive along the Rio Grande on Texas Highway 170 between Lajitas and Presidio. It runs along the southern boundary of the Texas Big Bend Ranch State Park. Among the many beautiful sites is the movie set Contrabando.

The Contrabando movie set is named for a nearby canyon and not a movie. Built in 1985 for the western "Uphill All the Way", it saw steady use for 20 years. Two Larry McMurtry books - Streets of Laredo and Dead Man Walk - were filmed here. Heavy flooding in 2008 inundated the set in eight feet of water. It survived and has been repaired, waiting for the next Oscar winner to be filmed here.

The River Road (a.k.a. FM 170) is one of the most spectacular drives in Texas. Running alongside the Rio Grande, this is Far West Texas at its best.

Saint Anthony Of Padua

St. Anthony was born in the year 1195 at Lisbon, Portugal. His wealthy family wanted him to be a great nobleman, but for the sake of Christ he became a poor Franciscan Priest.

After getting stranded and being sick, Saint Anthony lived in a cave at San Paolo leaving only to attend Mass and sweep the nearby monastery. One day when a scheduled speaker failed to appear, the brothers pressed him into speaking. He impressed them so that he was thereafter constantly travelling, evangelizing, preaching, and teaching theology through Italy and France. A gifted speaker, he attracted crowds everywhere he went, speaking in multiple tongues.

Anthony died on June 13, 1231, being only thirty six year old. Pope Gregory IX enrolled him among the saints in the very next year. At Padua, a magnificent basilica was built in his honor, his holy relics were entombed there in 1263.

San Diego Night Sky

San Diego is an appealing city to photograph at night. Its downtown skyline contains no super-talls, as a regulation put in place by the Federal Aviation Administration in the 1970s set a 500 feet (152 m) limit on the height of buildings due to the proximity of San Diego International Airport. An iconic description of the skyline includes its skyscrapers being compared to the tools of a toolbox, because several of its buildings look like tools.

Harbor Drive provides an awesome view of San Diego bay and down town. Come here with your favorite gal on a clear night or day for a nice romantic spot to take it all in. Bring a basket of snacks and drinks, throw down a blanket and have a little picnic. It's one of those spots your date is sure not to forget!

Hales Grove CA Trapped In The Past

Hales Grove (formerly, Monroe and Monroeville) on California Highway 1 once was a busy spot with a restaurant, motel, some houses and Hank Braun's split products mill.
All the off-highway truck drivers stopped there on their two hour drive one way to and from Fort Bragg, which gave them two trips per eight hours day.

Today Hales Grove is an unincorporated, populated community in Mendocino County, CA. The Monroe post office opened in 1897, and after several moves closed in 1912.

Waco - Branding The Brazos

Located on the scenic Brazos River, Waco in Central Texas offers a number of activities, sites, and places to enjoy. The "signature" welcome to Waco is the historic suspension bridge, that spans the Brazos River and was completed in 1870.

A cowboy sculpture and a herd of bronze longhorns at the Waco Suspension Bridge are part of the Waco Chisholm Trail Heritage public sculpture project "Branding the Brazos," a cattle drive sculpture grouping by artist Robert Summers. The Waco Suspension Bridge was the main crossing point for the historic cattle drives heading north on the Chisholm Trail, and this sculpture commemorates those days. When the project is complete, a total of four riders and 25 longhorn cattle will fill the park.

Little Waco, 22nd in population with only 125,000 souls within its city limits, is the perfect destination to get the feel of this legendary place called Texas.

Bull Market Quadriptych

Texas Longhorns in Waco TX - Waco is hardly the most famous place around, but, boy, does it reflect the face, the popular image of Texas. Situated between Austin and Dallas, Waco was located on the important Chisholm Trail, the north-south route used to transport cattle from ranches in Texas to railheads in Kansas.

The Waco Suspension Bridge is the centerpiece of Waco's downtown. The old bridge features the 'Branding the Brazos Cattle Drive Sculpture' - bronze sculptures commemorating the crossing where cowpunchers paid a toll of five cents per head of longhorn cattle to cross the Brazos River. The statues are a part of the Waco Chisholm Trail Heritage sculpture project, a work in progress, as more sculptures are coming, paying homage to Waco's role along the historic cattle-drive trail, where many herds of Texas Longhorns from deep south Texas made their Brazos River crossing over this bridge.

Waco and the Heart of Texas have deep ties to Texas history. Little Waco, 22nd in population with only 125,000 souls within its city limits, is the perfect destination to get the feel of this legendary place called Texas.

Continental Center I Houston TX

Also known as: Continental Airlines Building - Formerly: 1600 Smith

Continental Center I, 51-story, 732ft office tower in Downtown Houston, Texas, is a slender sliver of pockmarked stone climbing into the sky, a wide grid of strength, challenging the other buildings for dominance of Power Corner.

The tower stands as a postmodern-style building. It is currently the 8th-tallest building in Houston. The structure's asymmetrical shape allows it to look different from different angles, and its final geometry is subject to interpretation. Though it may appear sparse from some sides, the exterior landscaping contains a sunken fountain and picnic area, as well as some interestingly done sculptures integrated into the sidewalk along Smith Street, known as the "rolled up sidewalks". In 2010, Continental Airlines and United Airlines announced that they would merge and that the headquarters of the combined company would be in the Chicago Loop in Chicago.

1600 Smith may look chunky, but it is refreshingly different, and the garage for the former Continental Airlines Building has a cool view of the futuristic looking pedestrian skywalks of Chevron's buildings.
