Saint Anthony Of Padua

St. Anthony was born in the year 1195 at Lisbon, Portugal. His wealthy family wanted him to be a great nobleman, but for the sake of Christ he became a poor Franciscan Priest.

After getting stranded and being sick, Saint Anthony lived in a cave at San Paolo leaving only to attend Mass and sweep the nearby monastery. One day when a scheduled speaker failed to appear, the brothers pressed him into speaking. He impressed them so that he was thereafter constantly travelling, evangelizing, preaching, and teaching theology through Italy and France. A gifted speaker, he attracted crowds everywhere he went, speaking in multiple tongues.

Anthony died on June 13, 1231, being only thirty six year old. Pope Gregory IX enrolled him among the saints in the very next year. At Padua, a magnificent basilica was built in his honor, his holy relics were entombed there in 1263.

San Diego Night Sky

San Diego is an appealing city to photograph at night. Its downtown skyline contains no super-talls, as a regulation put in place by the Federal Aviation Administration in the 1970s set a 500 feet (152 m) limit on the height of buildings due to the proximity of San Diego International Airport. An iconic description of the skyline includes its skyscrapers being compared to the tools of a toolbox, because several of its buildings look like tools.

Harbor Drive provides an awesome view of San Diego bay and down town. Come here with your favorite gal on a clear night or day for a nice romantic spot to take it all in. Bring a basket of snacks and drinks, throw down a blanket and have a little picnic. It's one of those spots your date is sure not to forget!

San Diego Spreckels Organ

Needed a Classical music fix surrounded by magnificent architecture? Come to Balboa Park in beautiful San Diego, CA.

Presented to the citizens of San Diego in 1914 by brothers John and Spreckels, the ornate, curved Spreckels Organ Pavilion houses a magnificent organ with 4,518 individual pipes. They range in length from the size of a pencil to 32 feet, making it one of the largest outdoor organs in the world. Visitors can enjoy free hour-long concerts on Sundays at 2pm, given by civic organist Carol Williams; free concerts are also held in the evening during the summer months. There's seating for 2,400 but little shade, so bring some sunscreen.

A definite must do on a sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm and best of all it's free!

Hales Grove CA Trapped In The Past

Hales Grove (formerly, Monroe and Monroeville) on California Highway 1 once was a busy spot with a restaurant, motel, some houses and Hank Braun's split products mill.
All the off-highway truck drivers stopped there on their two hour drive one way to and from Fort Bragg, which gave them two trips per eight hours day.

Today Hales Grove is an unincorporated, populated community in Mendocino County, CA. The Monroe post office opened in 1897, and after several moves closed in 1912.

Waco - Branding The Brazos

Located on the scenic Brazos River, Waco in Central Texas offers a number of activities, sites, and places to enjoy. The "signature" welcome to Waco is the historic suspension bridge, that spans the Brazos River and was completed in 1870.

A cowboy sculpture and a herd of bronze longhorns at the Waco Suspension Bridge are part of the Waco Chisholm Trail Heritage public sculpture project "Branding the Brazos," a cattle drive sculpture grouping by artist Robert Summers. The Waco Suspension Bridge was the main crossing point for the historic cattle drives heading north on the Chisholm Trail, and this sculpture commemorates those days. When the project is complete, a total of four riders and 25 longhorn cattle will fill the park.

Little Waco, 22nd in population with only 125,000 souls within its city limits, is the perfect destination to get the feel of this legendary place called Texas.

Bull Market Quadriptych

Texas Longhorns in Waco TX - Waco is hardly the most famous place around, but, boy, does it reflect the face, the popular image of Texas. Situated between Austin and Dallas, Waco was located on the important Chisholm Trail, the north-south route used to transport cattle from ranches in Texas to railheads in Kansas.

The Waco Suspension Bridge is the centerpiece of Waco's downtown. The old bridge features the 'Branding the Brazos Cattle Drive Sculpture' - bronze sculptures commemorating the crossing where cowpunchers paid a toll of five cents per head of longhorn cattle to cross the Brazos River. The statues are a part of the Waco Chisholm Trail Heritage sculpture project, a work in progress, as more sculptures are coming, paying homage to Waco's role along the historic cattle-drive trail, where many herds of Texas Longhorns from deep south Texas made their Brazos River crossing over this bridge.

Waco and the Heart of Texas have deep ties to Texas history. Little Waco, 22nd in population with only 125,000 souls within its city limits, is the perfect destination to get the feel of this legendary place called Texas.

Continental Center I Houston TX

Also known as: Continental Airlines Building - Formerly: 1600 Smith

Continental Center I, 51-story, 732ft office tower in Downtown Houston, Texas, is a slender sliver of pockmarked stone climbing into the sky, a wide grid of strength, challenging the other buildings for dominance of Power Corner.

The tower stands as a postmodern-style building. It is currently the 8th-tallest building in Houston. The structure's asymmetrical shape allows it to look different from different angles, and its final geometry is subject to interpretation. Though it may appear sparse from some sides, the exterior landscaping contains a sunken fountain and picnic area, as well as some interestingly done sculptures integrated into the sidewalk along Smith Street, known as the "rolled up sidewalks". In 2010, Continental Airlines and United Airlines announced that they would merge and that the headquarters of the combined company would be in the Chicago Loop in Chicago.

1600 Smith may look chunky, but it is refreshingly different, and the garage for the former Continental Airlines Building has a cool view of the futuristic looking pedestrian skywalks of Chevron's buildings.

Esperson Buildings Houston, TX

Once, this was the crown jewel of Houston's skyline, and today Esperson Buildings is the only full-blown example of Italian Renaissance architecture in Houston downtown. It was the tallest building in Texas when built. Because of its history, this structure is properly referred to in the plural. The lit cupola crowning the building, along with the Gulf Building, defined the Houston skyline for three decades.

Esperson Buildings is wonderfully detailed with a gold-leaf tower topped by an elaborate grand tempietto similar to the one built in 1502 in the courtyard of San Pietro in Rome. Roof gardens grace the 17th, 22nd, 25th and 29th floors. The keystones on the lower floors look somewhat like Texas longhorns, but are actually Roman ox skulls. The interior retains some of their 1930s detail - terra cotta urns, terraces, bronze elevator doors, arabesque obelisks, and extensive use of imported Roman marble. Mellie Esperson had the building constructed for her husband, Niels, a Texas real estate and oil tycoon. His name is carved on the side of the building in large letters at street level. The name "Mellie Esperson" is carved on her accompanying structure, known as the Mellie Esperson building. It is really just a 19-story annex to the originally building, and the reason the two are termed collectively.

The ghost of Mellie Esperson is said to roam the "Mellie" building. The elevator malfunctions, and employees say they feel "watched." The Esperson buildings have the curious habit of popping up when you least expect it in the city's skyline. Because of its central location and lack of any taller next-door neighbors, this architectural ghost of the Espersons is able to haunt millions of people daily from its lofty perch.

New Orleans St Louis Cemetery No 3

New Orleans is well-known for the above-ground tombs in its cemeteries, and one of the best cemeteries in N'awlins for visitors to explore is St. Louis Cemetery No. 3, located on Esplanade Avenue, near Bayou St. John.

There is a lot of history in NOLAs's St. Louis Cemetery #3 - multigenerational families of Catholic (and Greek Orthodox) faith, many society tombs such as the famous Byzantine style tomb of the Hellenic Orthodox community, the Dante Lodge of Masons, the Young Men's Benevolent Association, and the United Slavonian Benevolent Association. There are many more italian names here than in the older cemeteries. But also city history written and contained in stone: of floods and famines and yellow fever outbreaks. Hurricanes, too.

Through it all, the Big Easy and Saint Louis cemetery Number 3 survived. It's a beautiful place to visit.

Padre Pio - St Louis Cemetery Number 3 New Orleans

Statue of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, better known as Padre Pio, located in St. Louis Cemetery Number Three on Esplanade Avenue at Bayou St. John in New Orleans.
Padre Pio, who was reputed to be in possession of the Stigmata (the wounds of Christ Crucified), lived from 1885 to 1968, and was canonized by John Paul II in 2002.

Padre Pio was a Capuchin friar. The Capuchins had a big presence in N'awlins. Combine that with the Big Easy's large Italian community and it's easy to understand how his cult grew strong here. New Orleanians are big believers in the mystical side of Catholicism. The Lourdes, Fatima, and Guadalupe apparitions of the Virgin Mary are all honored here. Being the extremely Catholic town NOLA is, it's no surprise to see devotional statues such as this in a Catholic cemetery. This statue of Padre Pio is relatively new, erected in the spring of 2005.

The inscription on the bottom of the statue reads:
"This humble Capuchin friar surprised the world with his life totally dedicated to prayer and to listening to his brothers and sisters. His body, marked by the Stigmata, demonstrated the intimate connection between death and resurrection."

A Blue Door In New Orleans

The first thing many people notice as you enter a home is the front door. A door is part of the face of a home. It's just a small part of the house but as an architectural element it says a lot about the times. This is especially true of historic homes. Many times doors were almost works of art in their day. Now they are works of art!

A classic example of New Orleans architectural elements is shuttered doors. Shuttered doors allow the homeowner to let a breeze in, keep the sun out, and combat storm winds. Shuttered doors are found on many of NOLA's historical homes and buildings peppered throughout the French Quarter. The architectural elements found throughout The Big Easy are reason enough for a visit.

Today many old doors are restored to give that feel "hey I did not forget that I am an old home". If N'awlins' doors, walls, courtyards and streets could talk I would love to hear their conversation.

Crazy Whimsy Wacky New Orleans

The architecture and the history of New Orleans and the French Quarter is incredible.

Vieux Carre's Streets are full of galleries, decent cafand vintage stores, you can walk from block to block and get an array of entertainment, from gypsy punks to statue men, to brass bands to classical violinists. Food in the quarter is expensive, drinks are not. Drinking is cheap and you are allowed to drink on the streets. N'awlins is known for its Hurricane drinks.

NOLA is a sultry, seductive city whose gardens reflect a rich history. Decadent nineteenth-Century buildings and courtyards provide an exquisite backdrop for exotic profligate vegetation. These serve as inspiration for all garden enthusiasts for exotic balcony gardens, or lush French Quarter design to inspire ardent gardeners.
