Mardi Gras Beads New Orleans

What comes to your mind when you think of New Orleans' Mardi Gras? For some, it's the traditional fare of extravagant parade floats, exquisite masks, and beautiful beads. For others, the image that comes to mind is that of wild parties and the craziness that is NOLA's Bourbon Street.

Glass beads did not become a New Orleans Mardi Gras staple until the 1880s, after Anglo-American "krewes" had formed to organize the loose-knit festivities. Legend has it that the first parade participant to use beads was a man dressed up as Santa Claus; the ornamental strands were such a hit that other krewes picked up on the ritual. By 1900, when at least 100,000 tourists a year flocked to the Crescent City for Mardi Gras, beaded throws were ubiquitous.

Despite all of the other Big Easy souvenirs, colorful bead necklaces remain the most popular trinket passed out during the Mardi Gras celebration. They are now made with cheaper and safer materials like plastic and aluminum rather than glass. Traditional Mardi Gras beads are purple, green, and gold colors. The purple symbolizes justice; the green represents faith; and the gold signifies power.

Throw me something, mister!

New Orleans Bubba Gump Shrimp Co

Bubba Gump Shrimp: There's no more family-friendly restaurant on Decatur Street in New Orleans' French Quarter for delicious seafood, friendly service and an experience the whole family will enjoy. Bubba Gump Shrimp Co Restaurant & Market is the first and only casual restaurant inspired by the 1994 film Forrest Gump, extending to over more than 30 locations worldwide.

This family friendly restaurant chain themed on Forrest Gump's life, philosophy and love of shrimp, showcases memorabilia and photos from the movie, along with reproductions of script pages, storyboards and costumes. Channeling the irrepressible spirit of Tom Hank's iconic Forrest Gump, NOLA's Bubba Gump Shrimp company pays homage to the movie's Southern decor with a comfortable atmosphere and - of course - lots of movie memorabilia. Wall-sized murals, tables decorated with classic "Gump-isms" and signed photos make The Big Easy's Bubba Gump a fun restaurant for the whole family.

"MAMA ALWAYS SAID LIFE WAS LIKE A BOX OF CHOCOLATES.
YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'RE GONNA GET."
~ Forrest Gump

A menu full of down-home cooking that Forrest would have loved completes Bubba Gump Shrimp's friendly Louisiana atmosphere.

New Orleans Hot Summer Night

Summer in New Orleans is like winter in Alaska. It traps you inside.
The hot and humid August air will hang on you like a heavy, steamy, wet blanket. Buy when the sun sets, everyone is itchy to get outside.

New Orleans follows the southern European architectural style of placing a patio at the center of a building. Often a plain facade hides a lush garden. A balcony or a patio offers a cool oasis, in all senses of the word, on a hot night. When the sun sets and the streets are quiet, grab a stool and sip a refreshing drink in silence and peace, and you can almost hear the clinking glasses of parched men who sought refuge and a cocktail long before Louisiana became a state.

New Orleans that means food, music, and long sultry, romantic nights, and after dark the night shift of flora comes on duty; especially in older neighborhoods such as Esplanade Ridge, Carrollton, the Garden District, etc with an abundance of night-blooming jasmine. The sweet deliciously scented air can be almost intoxicating.

New Orleans Spanish Moss On Live Oaks

Live Oaks and Spanish Moss (Tillandsia usneoides) are an odd New Orleans Couple. They have gotten along for hundreds of years and remain very compatible. With silver gray threadlike stems it hangs in long graceful streams from the trees. It has long been associated with the beauty of the trees of the Deep South.

Dripping with ghostly looking spanish moss, these live oaks are a beautiful sight to see when you are walking through the over 1,300 acres that make up The Big Easy's City Park. Oak Trees With branches that soar into the sky and reach out to touch the ground. They have survived numerous hurricanes; they sheltered the original Native American inhabitants that lived along the banks of Bayou St. John; they were witness to many duels of honor right into the 1800′s. These live oaks were watching over the bayous and swamps long before the French and Spanish showed up to settle the area.

Driving through NOLA's City Park on a weekday (especially during the school year), you can always find an unoccupied place to stake a claim under one of these magnificent trees. Spread a blanket, sit back, relax and let history wash over you.

New Orleans Happy Houses

One of the funnest places to go house-peeping is none other than New Orleans, Louisiana. After Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005, there has been renewal and rebuilding taking place, giving houses - and whole neighborhoods - a renewed sense of pride and history. It's amazing what a new coat of paint can do to awaken one's spirit.

New Orleans is the city that brought us Tabasco sauce, Po'boys, poker and Jazz - Jazz being a word meaning "energetic or vigorous". Have a look at some of these colorful New Orleans homes that really embody the VIVE vibe of the historic Cajun city. Interestingly, New Orleans Louisiana has the most National Historic Districts of any other city in the United States - 20 in all.

Kudos to the resilience and creative spirit of the people of NOLA!

New Orleans Lafayette Cemetery No. 1

The above-ground tombs in New Orleans cemeteries are often referred to as "cities of the dead." Enter the cemetery gates, and you will be greeted by rusty decorative ironwork and blinded by sun-bleached tombs. Crosses and statues jutting from tomb surfaces cast contrasting shadows, adding to the sense of mystery. Votive candles line tombs on holidays, reminding you that the dead have living relatives who still care.

Because the city of New Orleans is built on a swamp, the deceased have to be buried above ground here in elaborate stone crypts and mausoleums. Over time the cemeteries, with elaborate sculptures and other decorative artwork embellishing the tombs, have come to come to resemble small villages - the "Cities of the Dead."

Along with Spanish moss and lacy iron balconies, the cities of the dead are part of the indelible landscape of 'The Big Easy'. For many years, Nola's cemeteries were in shambles. Crypts lay open, exposing their pitiful contents - if they weren't robbed of them - bricks, shattered marble tablets, even bones, lay strewn around. Several of the worst eyesores have been cleaned up, though others still remain in deplorable shape.

Iconic New Orleans Wrought Iron Balcony

Although we use the term "French Creole" to describe buildings in the French Quarter of New Orleans, the fancy ironwork is not actually French at all. The wrought iron balconies of New Orleans are a Victorian elaboration on a Spanish idea. Creole blacksmiths, who were often free black men, refined the art, creating elaborate wrought iron pillars and balconies.

The old French quarter of New Orleans seems like a city of iron lace, so lavishly did the old Creole builders make use of the wrought metal. From street to street the web of iron-work runs: from house to house, from balcony to balcony. Story above story the balconies climb upward, till the house-front is veiled in iron lace. In the older homes the family initial is wrought into its balcony-grille.

The wrought iron balconies add their touch to make New Orleans' old French quarter one of the most artistically picturesque spots in America.

Experience New Orleans

New Orleans is a special place. NOLA's Nightlife, Festivals, Dining, Entertainment, Music, Art and Culture, Architecture, Unique Attractions, Romantic Getaways, Gaming and Shopping opportunities are unlike any other.

You could easily spend a month or more in 'The Big Easy' and still discover something new everyday. Flush with museums, historical sites and art galleries, you could spend a couple of weeks here bouncing around between the best things to do. The city is home to a world-class zoo and aquarium. There's an entire warehouse dedicated to Mardi Gras props and then there are dozens of cemeteries which are so old and full of stories that they've become attractions in their own right. When it comes to simply having a good time, the nightlife of New Orleans is second to none. There are dozens of clubs where you can drink and dance until dawn to some of the country's top musicians. There are also dozens of festivals where residents devote entire weekends to celebrating everything from Creole tomatoes to Louis 'Satchmo' Armstrong. Most of the best things to do in New Orleans are located in the downtown or Uptown area making it easy to take in many in one day.

And you can walk, especially in the Garden District. Visitors say some of their most memorable moments come just strolling down Decatur Street in the French Quarter, hanging out at a streetcar stop or waiting for a table at a restaurant.

Elephant Feet Rocks Arizona

If Arizona travelers were not already acquainted with some of the world's most recognized striking rock formations, these two lone Elephant Feet would be a big surprise. This roadside oddity stands near the town of Tonalea in Coconino County just outside Tuba City on Route 160.

The two pillars that look like great big elephant feet are the remains of eroded, Middle Jurassic Entrada Sandstone. They are just one of hundreds of unusual and distinct rock art features located within the Navajo Nation. They look so much like elephant feet that you don't even have to squint your eyes or tilt your head to get the picture. The fact that the pillars are grayish white and brownish red instead of gray does not affect the illusion. Nor does the fact that they're about 20 feet tall make any difference. Who knows how big them desert-stompers were billions of years ago?

The Spindle - Valley Of The Gods

Tucked away in southeatern Utah just north of Navajo Nation and Monument Valley is a little gem - Valley of the Gods. Some say there are gods in the rocks! I'm not sure but Valley of the Gods is quite beautiful.

The legend is that those rock formations are places of power where the spirits reside and those in Valley of the Gods are some of the most distinctive. These imposing monoliths are Navajo Warriors frozen in Stone who can be appealed to for protection. They are guardians whose power and strength aid young serviceman going to war.

Ecologist and naturalist Terry Tempest Williams eloquently captured Valley of the Gods landscapes sweeping grandeur thusly: "It is a landscape so startling, so fragile and enduring. At once, it can bring one to their knees in humility and awe." It does more than that. It leaves the body numb, purges it and refills it all at once with a new Life clean and pure, and real.

Valley Of The Gods - A Oasis For The Soul

Valley of the Gods, a beautiful sandstone valley, is located north of Monument Valley and near Mexican Hat in southeastern Utah.

The views across the valley floor, beautiful Cedar Mesa sandstone monoliths, pinnacles and other geological features of this enchanted and magical area, framed in by the silhouettes of the nearby Monument Valley are breathtaking. This is so reachable, so touchable with dirt roads to get closer to those majestic monuments, those work of Art. There is a transformation that takes place here, seems like Life has again slowed down and one can get into the deeper part of Life itself, there is nothing but vast empty spaces, there is undisturbed Peace inducing an incredible detachment from what one has been programmed to live through as nothing besides the monuments seemed to have changed throughout those millions of years of existence.

Like the Valley of Fire in Nevada or Snow Canyon in Utah, the Valley of the Gods is an unforgettable side trip through an incomparable land. Someone described it as "Monument Valley writ small." But it is much more than that. The Valley of the Gods is a cameo of the American West.

Walking In The Valley Of The Gods

Do you worship nature? If you do believe that nature needs to be dominate, I have the alter for you to pray at.

Valley of the Gods in Utah is north of the better known Monument Valley near the little town of Mexican Hat. Drive right up to these stunting rock structures. The road to the Valley is harder to find than most others. The rock structures are more noticeable than the signs. The graded road is between the Utah Route 261 and US Route 163.

North America is blessed with an abundance of beautiful scenery, one of them is the Valle of the Gods. What an amazing place!

Spectacular Valley Of The Gods

The Valley of the Gods in southeastern Utah is a smaller scale version of Monument Valley, with huge isolated red sandstone rocks standing above the level desert floor, remnants of an ancient sandstone plateau of sandstone that covered the area 50 million years ago.

The 17-mile dirt road drive begins among buttes and pinnacles, then wends through strange and alien formations, twists through high mesa canyons, and ends up descending to the valley floor and following the dust dry Lime Creek arroyo to route 183. Water, wind and ice have sculpted the shapes that the Navajo believe are living spirits.

The Valley of the Gods sits on BLM land. It is an extraordinary place to experience the beauty of Southern Utah without all the restrictions and regulations of National Park Land.

Valley Of The Gods

Many people have seen Monument Valley, the vast, iconic desert on the Arizona-Utah border that's gorgeously interrupted by colossal sandstone monoliths, like bulky ships sailing an ocean of sand. Most often they've seen it in the context of a Hollywood shoot-'em-up with cowboys like John Wayne twirling six-shooters and dodging arrows. But few people know that 40 miles up the road there is another monumental valley - a geological "mini-Monument Valley," known as the Valley of the Gods. A quarter the size of its famed neighbor, it has dozens of equally spectacular sandstone sculptures and spires, but on a smaller scale. What they lack in size, they make up for in brilliant color and variety. And best of all, you're unlikely to see a single tourist bus here.

Dusted with fine red dirt and punctuated with silver-green brush, the valley lies at the base of a 1,200-foot bluff called Cedar Mesa that was formed when a sea invaded from the northwest 250 million years ago. The area's jagged towers, gravelly washes, and tortured sandstone formations line Valley of the Gods Road, a 17-mile dirt route that links Highways 163 and 261, forming a scenic loop. Each bend in the road reveals a surprise, a slightly different shade of red or a new rock contortion, many of which are described in Navajo legend as ancient warriors frozen in time.

There are places to pull over and hike, have a picnic, or, if you're so inclined, do some bouldering. But don't expect restrooms or a snack bar.
